  • Tom paints a picture with his words and tone of the current conditions of the fishery and its effects on west coast communities. He and his wife consider themselves lucky to still be in the fishing industry. Salmon was once their sole income, now they must fish other
    species and have had to invest more money into equipment to continue to fish and make a living.

    Having grown up in the industry, it was a great time to be a commercial fisherman. It all changed in the mid 90's, with Atlantic salmon farms becoming an easier alternative to wild Pacific salmon fishing regulations and quota estimations. We lost a livelihood with so much financially invested into and nothing to show for in the end. I could hear the despair in his voice, I have nothing but respect for this "Commie". Thanks for bringing back the memories of salmon fishing on the mighty Skeena.

    So sad.
    My first year commercial fishing was in 1975 purse seining herring out of Bamfield. Vancouver Island on Skip Butterfields troller the Ocean Conquest.
    My how times change! Not necessarily for the best.
    DFO Thank you.

    Wow, only $1.65 per pound. The fisherman are the ones doing all the work and risking their lives but the supermarkets are the ones getting rich. In my local supermarkets, Sockeye Salmon is selling for anywhere between $21.95 - $23.95 per pound. That's a real shame but then if we boycott the salmon, the fisherman would probably get paid even less per pound. This is a horrible situation, too bad the fisherman couldn't sell ALL of their catch directly to the consumer. 😒

      I com from a large fishing family and have worked the westcoast for many years. The smartest move the gillnetters could do is to lease their licenses to the seine boats. There is a lot of nostalgia and ego involved but the same amount of energy could be put in with less pollution and more old timers being able to retire.

      THE FISHERMEN SHOULD OPEN THEIR OWN CHAIN OF MARKETS BUT THAT WONT HAPPEN BECAUSE THAT WORM PATTISON OWNS A BUNCH OF SUPERMARKETS..............

    Commercial fishing on the BC coast is slowly dying due to miss management by DFO it’s actually really sad… I remember when I was a kid the skeena would be open 4 to5 days out of the week now you’re lucky to get 4 to 5 days a season... Or any season at all because steel head is such a major priority

    great video.... not big on commercial fishing.. more of a sporty... but sure would like to see you guys getting paid fair !!! you would think with the awareness of health benefits from eating fish plus the decline of the fish stock that prices would only be going up.. and if anything.. this is the most precious resource we have... we should be protecting it... and with small opportunities should hold a higher value !!!!

  • @interstategar
    @interstategar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something should be done to protect the small operator so they can make a descent living. If the fish are amanged to protect them, the market should be managed as far as prices go.

    Great video, especially the comment on how one big company owns most of the coast...as a sportsfisherman I wish it weren't like that and it was just the mom and pop shows like before! Makes it more profitable for guys like you and helps sportsfishermen at the same time as commies and sporties could work together much more easily.

    It's rare that a fisherman tells you what he earns. They usually cry poverty over here in the Chesapeake Bay of eastern US (Blue crab). Those large boats are often paid for though.

    It would be nice if fishermen could have their own fish market stores to sell their fish and not having to sell them to the general supermarket stores which want to earn to much money for the fish. In here, Perú (South america) we have a lot of fish. Huge quantities, on our seas. But you go to a general supermarket and they want to charge you so much for a fish. The only way get good fish prices is if you go to a main market fish of the city, which we have two or three, I think, only three for the whole capital of Lima, a 10 million people capital city of Perú. Thanks for the video, really nice but really sad.

    Great watch. The Canadian gill-netters suffer because they are being caught before they re enter Canadian waters. They need to get a grasp on the Alaskan fishery hammering our fish. All stocks. Sockeye, Coho and Chinook. It's sad to see. Also, when there is commercial openings, they usually fish Friday and Saturdays. Resulting in few fish for the rod anglers to catch on their weekend upriver. This results in tensions between commercial and anglers. Very poor management!

  • @MrBuhner
    @MrBuhner 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    so sad they have to chuck sockeye away because the pinks are now the mandatory catch till the sockeye opening it just makes no sense throwing fresh caught sockeye thrown away the DFO MINISTER is weird has he ever being in a fishing boat to make these kind of choices of throwing food away that can be easily sold or the fisherman call it booked to the fish plant

    great video, brought memories back--first started west coast fishing in 1979...and dfo still is reluctant to inforce regulations--mandate wild stock...its heartbreaking to see a natural resource(many fisheries) so mis-managed. I ,too, hope you are on the water at 80--and enjoying it!

    That's what happens when one company owns all the canneries and can cheat the fishermen. They pay 1.65 a pound and then sell it for over 20 dollars a pound to the consumers. It's too bad the fishermen can't sell thier catch right off the boat to the consumers and cut out the corporate canneries. If they could you'd see the canneries raise the price so they could have fish to process.

    Video should be titled "The rape of our oceans". Over fishing by commercial and native fishermen is killing our seas.
