I'm a Boomer, but my values have aligned with the Millennials since college when I was enlightened about the way things worked in this county and the damage we were doing to the planet with our consumerist lifestyle. Unfortunately, my generation has not lived up to the promises of radical social change we fought for in the '60's. I still hold out hope that the next generation can accomplish more than we did for the sake of the country and the planet.

Glad to see you put this idea on its head Mr. Reich. I too see hope in the Millennials, and especially in the likes of your AOC. I am excited for them. Go Ms. Cortez!

As a result of that, they’re the least successful generation in history. Us boomers were more likely than any other generation to prioritize pay and benefits when choosing our careers. As a result of that, we’re the most successful generation in history. It’s all about choices. Millennials are in the situation they’re in because of their own choices, not because of us boomers.

@@johnmartin4641 I don’t blame the boomers, but what you said is ridiculous. We were told you have to go to college, and college rose in price by 300% thanks to government backed loans boomers voted for, wages have also stagnated for 30 years, not the boomers fault but the push for globalization has driven down wages and increased competition. During this same time the price of real estate has gone up something 30x where it was 30 years ago while wages have only increased by 2-3x making virtually impossible to build wealth. Not to mention, again not your fault but the environment is a disaster and it’s largely the fault of irresponsible corporations dumping waste wherever they choose. Millennials should take some responsibility. I myself am fine I have a job with a pension and benefits but generationally we were hamstrung.

Robert, you forgot to mention the CAUSE for the real reason Millennials are struggling, both political parties have sold out the citizenry right to quality, stable middle class jobs, for corporate sponsored legislation that outsources those jobs to cheaper foreign labor under contract servitude that have taken millions of high paying jobs away from the tax paying citizens who have the education and are the best and brightest. Gone are the jobs with middle class salaries for Americans, retirement, benefits, paid vacation, affordable medical coverage - foreign and H1B labor from India has wiped out the American Dream for American citizens for corporate profits and the top 1%! And for the Boomers, its far worse!

I think alot of the percentage comparisons are skewed. Both were asked these questions when they are at different times in their lives. I wish we older folks watching this video would be around in 2055 when the Millenials would be reaching retirement age and see what they say to the same questions. Many if not all of the boomers when they were 20yrs old felt the same as the Millenials do today, age ( and thus all that comes with it) changes one's perspective on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    • @DualSwordBesken

Surveys are showing millennials are already breaking the old trend of becoming more conservative as a person ages. The oldest millennials are in their early 40s now, and usually by this point in a generation the amount of people within that generation voting republican has begun to increase. This trend isn't holding true for millennials, and is even decreasing. We obviously can't know the future, but if trends continue as is, millennials still won't answer the questions the same as boomers currently are even in 2055.
From a personal stance as a middle millennial myself (32), I'm definitely more left leaning now than I was 10 years ago, and I was already left leaning then too. Speaking strictly for myself, I became more aware of the political landscape around me as I got older, saw the policies that were in my way and in the way of others, and who was supporting those policies most. Given the state of rightwing politics right now, it is no wonder I am on the left.

I honestly feel this video should be the battle cry for all the millennials young and old, and the transitional millennials that bridge older millennials with our younger siblings in the upcoming generation Z or igen.
I consider a transitional millennial to be someone born between at least 93 or 94 and 2000. Or plainly stated 1995 (my year), or 1997 to 2000 which is my younger brother’s year. People born between those years as is likely with previous generations is where the differences begin to overlap where if you were born in those transitionary years, you might identify with your primary generation with some knowledge and empathy with the younger generation behind you. Then again, maybe we all identify with pieces of every living generation from the boomers to gen z as I found myself listening to a Ted talk regarding generations.

Socially and politically GenX has been a failure. We have made some cool tech, made some good movies, good music. These things are important but if the fundaments are not right you cant fully enjoy the fruits they bare. Back in 1997 when I first got online, I thought the internet would lift humanity up. I hadn't factored in peoples education and intelligence. If the fundamentals aren't
in place, this is what you get.

However, Baby Boomers are our teachers and parents, so both generations are connected. When we were in school they taught us the basic values of the hippies. I grew up listening to '60s music with my mom. I value and respect baby boomers.

Americas political system was designed for rich landowning white men, hence why its now showing its age when everyone should be equal but arnt.

Abyssinia Empire - We can't all be created equally. I was created autistic and suffering, and I fight with strange neurological and physical problems every day. If not for social safety nets, I'd be dead now, or living in a cardboard box. Even part-time jobs require full-time health.
If we believe that everyone is created equally, then we leave everything in our absent god's non-existent hands, abandoning those that need help, because our suffering must be deserved, part of the grand plan.
Unfortunately, the simple truth is that evolution rolls the dice, and some of us lose. What we do with the losers depends on how much compassion we have.
(Edit: after re-reading your comment, it's clear that you say we're not created equal, but I was responding to the part where you said we're born equal. Sorry if I didn't understand.)

  • @astrotherapist
    @astrotherapist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I was born in 1963, I'm a "young boomer," if you will. I'm guessing that if you took these same kinds of polls around 1970 to '75, you would have found many boomers stating they believed in a lot of these same things and had many of the same concerns themselves. What happened? Boomers grew up and went from being "hippies" to being "Yuppies" or those who went from "peace & love" to "go for the money man!" That's what happened. When these millennials get older, they too will change their minds, become greedy, and "go for the money, man, too!" That's called human nature. They will eventually come to realize that the only real thing in life that counts is making as much money as possible and to hell with anyone and everyone else! If this doesn't happen. If they stay true to the values they state they believe in now in the years to come, maybe, maybe for the first time in human history (or at least American history) we will actually have a new world for people to grow and live in. The peace & love generation has become the most disappointing bunch of selfish people ever to live in this country. Many of them grew up to be selfish, self-centered assholes who don't give a damn about anyone but themselves! That's why we are now living in an age where fascism (the very thing their parents fought to defeat) is now on the rise here in this country, and around the world! It's sad and it will take years, possibly decades to fix it.
