I owned the American version, renamed due to brand name issues Jaguar Vanden Plas Supercharged. My 2001, in special order Titanium mica paint, was sex on wheels, making its German rivals look like ugly ducklings. Note in the interior shots the uprated leather and burl walnut with teak inlays, hand crafted by artisans from legendary coachbuilder Vanden Plas - known for their bespoke interiors of Rolls and Daimler limos built to order for the Royals. This car could run circles around any Rolls or Bentley of that time. Compared with one of these, an S-class was slower, poorer handling, more expensive to maintain, and less attractive inside and out than this, the high point of the XJ series. The XJ was the Jaguar sedan Sir William Lyons hoped would capture the hearts of American luxury sedan buyers. This generation’s quad-cam supercharged V8 was infinitely superior to the previous-generation’s HE V12. The XJ sedan series had what was necessary to hold its own against the German competition. But ultimately not even this beauty could overcome the lingering reputation for poor reliability that haunted the Jaguar brand to American buyers due to British Leyland’s disastrous ownership of Jaguar over the 1970s. The irony is, after Ford had invested billions re-inventing the XJ (Daimler) seen here, its reliability was unmatched by its German competition.
Love that Kool and the Gang funky soundtrack! As disruptive as was this car, which in San Francisco turned heads as its passengers emerged from the rear seat at the Mark Hopkins hotel. Everyone was hoping to get a glimpse of Princess Di.
