Robert Plant's guitarist - Skin - playing the Gibson acoustic J35

  • Liam "Skin" Tyson - a surreal Liverpudlian who now lives in the Misty Mountains of North Wales, his combination of Pastoral acoustic open tuned guitars and electric 21st century psychedelia make him a perfect foil for Robert Plant's balladry and fire. He made a massive impact with Brit Pop group Cast in the 90s who had a succession of chart hits, mentored by figures like producer John Leckie. He built a studio in his Barn where he recorded his Men from Mars project and Cast's 5th album Troubled Times from where he nurtures local bands in between surfing and touring.

kayra can why do you say that? I’m a scouser so I’m a bit bias 😂 So many top bands have come out of Liverpool not to mention several pro boxers and other sports and movie celebrities we won the capital of culture award 2008 and famous for many landmarks and of course the river Mersey and docklands Theres lots to like about Liverpool ❤️👍

This is a wonderful video. Thanks for posting.
I just want to mention for clarification that the J-35 is the exact same shape and size as the J-45.

Exactly I think the light verses dark makes the guitars look a different size they are pretty much the same guitar the bracing and neck are somewhat different.

Perfect pitch from one tuning to another. Then performs in it immediately. Talent is just over the top. I met one and made friends he could do the same couldn't read music and any song he heard immediately play it. We use to play the radio game where I channel stations and stop at any song and he listens for some seconds then has me turn the volume down and he plays the song. Damn!

My understanding is that the J35 has the same dimensions as the J45. The most significant difference, aside from various finishes and neck carves and guard, is in the bracing pattern. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I love martins as much as the next guy, but some Martin fans are complete shills. This guy is amazing and the guitar sounds fantastic, I don't care who made it.
Bet your ass if that guitar sounded exactly the same but said Martin on the headstock all the Martin shills would go "wow, you cant beat a Martin."
    They are predictable.
    I've owned a D18ge, hd28v, ceo7, guild M20, Yamahas, cordobas, Gibson's, etc...
And you have got to be crazy to only like one manufacturer of guitar or think it's the only one that makes good instruments

what kind of top mounted pick up was on the J-35 (a black strip mounted below the fingerboard and extending from the pick guard/sound hole to the edge of the top) in the Austin City Limits show with Robert Plant. Is it a synthesizer puck up?

I like the J-45 better, has a richer tone. J-35 sounds a bit tinny, though perhaps the acoustics of the room don't do it any favors either.

I notice many Gibson guitar review/demos are done with the guitar tuned way down and in open tuning. This makes the guitar sound deep & rich. Gee, you don't see Taylors or Martins demoed this way. Anyone want to guess why?

Then you must not care for "The Rain Song" very much then..
One of Zepplins most famous songs, and one of my favorites especially the versions where Jimmy chooses the Acoustic, which he famously plays with the "upstroke" you mention almost entirely throughout the song.
      Beautiful....
