There is no comparison, the JL takes the win. I have yet to hear a sub that gets as loud as the W7 without compromising SQ. I have the 13.5 and that alone in my F-150 gets louder then my old pair of Rockford P3 15s. I never got why there is so many haters on W7, tbh majority of them just hate because they can't afford it...

What I mean is the performance, durability, bass and sound quality along with the price makes it one of the very best subs in my opinion.. there are much better subs out there but but not for the price.. Alpine did great with the type R

Kyle Knight for 700 I would never buy a w7, they arent worth it, not to say it isnt a good sub, but jl is way too proud of themselves. The type r will push 1500 rms all day without rebuilding it, and for 140, its one of the best subs for the price. But the type r has one design flaw, both coils run out 1 side of the spider, making one side stiffer than the other, which means its prone to failure at max excursion, but as I have said, it takes a lot of power to get it to bottom out, so normally its good, you just cant really compete with them in the heavier stuff, where they would otherwise belong.
If you've ever heard a 12w7 in an HO enclosure,it's stupid loud.There's no way you're beating that with one type r 12.Most people run their alpine subs in crappy prefab boxes,so 1 w7 in a proper box would prob walk all over most people's setups with 2 type Rs

Many will talk about the durability of the Alpine's but I've owned two 10" type S for over a year feeding them true 1200rms and they take it like no other. Dollar for dollar, you can't go wrong with Alpine. Sure, the W7 sounds amazing but shit, look at the price..fuck that
Iv owned a few different model alpines in the past and still have a set of em that I no longer use. But I had the alpine type E 12"s the white cone with the Black E in the middle and honestly they hit hard in a sealed box flexed the windshield we had em on a clarion 1200 watt mono block and they took it no issues for a good while then I sold em and ended up picking up the alpine type X 12s and holy shit was they loud lol I had them in a Virtual technologies vented box on two Skar 2500s and I ran em for about two years off and on. You can't go wrong with em even the entry level old type Es took power and slammed.
These two subs couldn't sound more different in person. Proud w7 owner, my boy has those type R 12s. IMO the Rs don't sound natural at all. Worst part is upper end around 65hz-80hz, punchy bass isn't smooth, material of cone partly to blame as you can hear the plastic sound on harder punches. Impressed with the lower end, thats Def where these subs shine. JL on the other hand is smooth and natural sounding throughout all frequencies. Even the punchy bass wasn't lost when going ported, whereas the alpine IMO just sounded bad at 45hz and up in the ported. Coming from a lifelong alpine fan, long before I got into jl. I love the older alpine decks, and their components, namely the type r 6.5s are very impressive, but Their subs have continued to worsen over the years. For the record I was comparing two type r 12s in a ported box (1.5 per chamber) vs one 10w7 in the jl HO box (1.25). Again, just my opinion.

And to Slick S I agree with you on lots of points especially the old school Alpines the 7909 is legendary I loved the 7390 back in the tape days. And I agree that W7 sound better but they should look at price tag! I think JL is over priced and over rated! If one is talking about SPL Competitions NO ONE RUNS JL ANYTHING! For SQ yeah there alright no better then alright but not worth anything close to there price tag! For that kind of money there is far superior subs for even less lots less! I've been installing for years first time I heard of them was I had to build a box for (3) 8w6s first gen and after I was done next day I went and bought (3) 12w6s I loved them back then they were expensive but now they have lost there minds! DC Audio, Crossfire, Hutchinson just quickly of the the top of my head all have far better subs for less! And what they put out depends on what you put them in sealed or ported what they are tuned to etc. But I must say JL has the BEST shallow mounts I've ever heard! I have friends who are at opposite side of spectrum I have a friend who runs all Mosconi power to Morel Supremos and another friend who just dropped $12,000 on (4) 18" Pride Audio subs powered by 56,000 watts of B2 power. So I know people on both sides of car audio which doesn't make me anybody but I went to school for mobile electronics installation in 1995 so I've been around some. But this is just my 2 cents.
@@bnstalls8949 I agree with you as well. The 7909 was legendary, I still have a cda-9855 that I'll never part with. I would've loved to hear the 8w6 setup or your three w6s. I ran two 12w6v2 sealed and it was one of the best setups I've ever had. Price tag is a little too much though. Thankfully my 13w7 has lasted me over a decade, and I just removed it from my ported box, so I can hear it sealed.

The 12w7 is actually far more efficient. It hits just as hard but doesn't need as much power. My previous 12 inch subs always dimmed my headlights, but my 12w7 is good on the same amp. Headlights never dim, and it's slightly louder and 50x cleaner than my older Kaption SPL1200s which were 600 watts rms each.
The type r is crap compare to the w7, there is no comparison. Even if you go with the alpine type x, which is better than the type r, the jl w7 will smoke it. So you can convince yourself which one has more spl and sq, why don’t you test them individually with an spl tester? This video sucks! Playing both at the same time and not doing any spl testing, HOW PATHETIC!!!!

A W6 would've been a better comparison as both the R and w6 are gearing for SQ. And have very similar power handling numbers I've had both subs and I can tell you that W6 sounds better but the alpines are built well , they look amazing Also the Motor ,casing and surrounds are much better , love the Kevlar surrounds they're phenomenal

I'd put W 6 or w7 subs in my ride before and alpine subs but it's not as big of a difference as people make this out to be. Alpine makes great products but JL makes the best Sub for SQ but can still slam when needed.

That box is too small for the w7 possibly the type r too. I had a w7 12 inch and the ported box took my whole trunk also the w7 sounds way different when powered by jl amps. First i had a 1200 watt brutus amp then switch to a 500/1 and the w7 hit much harder and bass notes were tighter. It blew my mind how an amp can change the characteristic of the sub
I tell people all of the time that if you're not going to buy a JL slash amp you shouldn't buy the JL subs. Much cleaner and deeper bass with a JL amp.

Alpine can't compete with JL. JL is worth every penny. Been using JL in all of my vehicles for 19 years now. I owned the W7, 13.5 and the Slash 1000 1v1. That thing was an absolute nightmare... in a good way😂. I'd never turn my back on JL. Their products have never failed me.

Its pretty clear that people are partial to the brands they like and know of but for those that dont know these are both very good subs . The alpine will handle more power overall but the JL has a more forgiving spider compliance and surround to accommodate its cooling factor. In this video, it's like comparing a sundown vs. An orion hcca. I'm currently using a Type R for my test bench in a sealed box around 1.4 cubes give or take and it get low with 400 watts rms . Got it from a friend of mine who had it wired @ 8 ohms yeah 8 ohms lol to an Orion hcca 5k . That amp does 3k at 4 ohms on a test bench at 14.4 volts lol just to give you a ball park of what it does at an 8ohm load. That one Type R could be heard a block away in his van in the sealed box and the gain was just shy of being all the way down. So yeah the type R s love power and the blow because of too less power or bad signal such as clipping. Just to get you heads thinking. Excuse any typos. But you get the picture.

If there's a sub that JL Audio W7s or Rockford Fosgate T2s would fear is the sadly discontinued JBL W12GTI MK2 12 inch sub at $799. Its a dual 6ohm, 4000 peak & underated at 700 rms, Kevlar paper cone, Nitrile-butylene surround, 3" voice coil, frequency response of 18hz-1000hz, max sealed box volume of 1.0 cubic feet, max ported box volume of 2.25 cubic feet, top-mount depth of 10-1/4", cutout diameter of 11" and very sensitive at 91db which most 12inch subs are in the 80s in db. I can only imagine what level this JBL sub would be as a current improved model today.
Agreed. I had one in a custom made ported box tuned to I think 30 or 32 hz. In any case, it was amazing and could get really, really low bass, still very loud. I miss that thing! I ran it on an Alpine MRX-M110 800rms amp, and tuned it with the oscilloscope. Thing was perfect
I replaced 2 of my type R's with a single W7 with JL's HO box. The w7 is a far better build and sound quality is superb. But then again we're also not comparing apples to apples. Powered by JL 1000/1

@@lunchie80 yes that is correct. The number of ports has nothing to do with how many chambers a box has. There's no way to tell from the outside but in this instance, he had mentioned in a another video the box was dual chambered.
Box too small . And you need todo separately each sub. And the bos NEEDS to be a bigger ported. Thinks twice before you do something. All you doing right now is holding the real power of the subs.
People like to talk sh!t, But the Type R is a pretty damn good sub for the money... SQ isn't bad and can take a pounding like a cheap whore.... JL is a SQ sub that is designed to run efficiently, Not to be pushed HARD at full RMS for SPL. JL is for connoisseurs not Bass heads...
@@charlesstuck4965 I've had the JL Slash 250/1 which actually puts out around 300 watts regardless of ohm load down to 1. With 2 W1 12's people could not believe that little amp beat those 12's like it did. I would tell them it was the combination of the CLEAN power and the efficiency of the W1 subs... It's hard to beat JL stuff when used together.
I recently bought a Hertz WX38 (first generation.. with an orange emblem and an orange “magnet”, who can say how much more interesting this jl 7 sounds than my hertz, or whether the hertz is still more musical than the jl7?:) if we compare at the same volume! And if you compare two Hertz WX38 against JL7, who will come out the winner? :)
it's better because it's cheaper, and yes I can afford the w7 have owned one in the past and didn't like it, I currently have 3 pairs of type r and I love them along side of that I have 2 RE audio xx15D and those are even cheaper than the w7 and I guarantee the will kill the w7

The two twelves alpine type r I had hooked up to my 1000/1 v2 slash, it bumped no doubt just like any low quality sub with decent power, but the 12 w7 will eat both of those for dinner and you know it.... the louder the dub 7 the cleaner the bass, your music must be 45 hz and up to appreciate a type r, but if you live life 30hz and below 10, 12, 13.5 w7 cannot be touched with the small amount of power feeding them.... Alpine over jl audio, really? You must think its 1995.... step ya music game up, soft rock doesn't need sub sonic bass...

That W7 was about to jump out of the box. I don't know what fasteners you used, but I'd recommend 1/4" or 5/16" lag screws and a bead of urethane windshield sealant.
I just ordered the w7ae-3 with the jl audio high output box built for that sub and when I was reading up on the anniversary edition there are 20 patents on it one being for its proprietary screws for the anniversary edition amd there are 20 of them the old w7's have 14
so this isn't a showdown of SPL it was just a test to see if each sub could handle a hyphonics amp. a real comparison would be to test each woofer max db on the same amp to so which outputs more.
pound for pound cost, quality ( sound and max rms and peak whats ) the type r is best but for more peak rms and power the best is the w7 by far so it depends in the defenition of best !?
I used to run 4 alpine type R DVC 12's (gen 1 with round surrounds not the pleated like shown in the vid) in bandpass enclosures, in the trunk of a 93 Taurus SHO, blew the trunk lid off, literally, the metal fatigue around the latch on the lid tore it out after a few weeks. I was running a JL 1800 D class monoblock with controls, and a Power acoustic active X-over with a tewakable boost curve from 33 hz to 80 hz, about 40 or so was optimal. the DVC Alpines were Banging. I then went to 2 10 W7's (Gen 1), computer modeled ported enclosures (33 hz was the port tune) and those things were over the top cleaner, louder, and more musical than the Alpines, and took up less than half the space. The JL's hurt . with the system i had you couldnt sit in the car at 3/4 volume. and it was clean.. multiple Polk audio front and rear stage mid bass mid range and tweets. Gel cell batteries and about 3 farads of capacitance. Still have most of the equipment, but i am old now so it sits in the closets (yeah one closet isnt big enough) plus all of my "trial and error" purchases that i didnt like.

The JL is only meant to run 3-1.5 ohms unless they use a slash or HD JL Audio mono amp to push the W7 it won't be optimal to be fair they both should be ran in their optimal 3ft enclosure and turning . I run Hertz,Audison,JL,Brax and Helix audio. All quality equipment ,the saying ( You get what you pay for)is very true. I been building systems almost 30 years now and have yet to find better audio quality than the 5 audio designer's I use. Well Brax and Helix are sister company's so they may only count as one . He'll come to think of it I believe Hertz and Audison are sister company's as well. Alpine isn't bad if you buy the European built equipment. Then the price doubles., But it will last for more than a few minutes, hours,days,years. You never know. Back when Alpine and Motorola where partners they built quality . Now it's more quantity and cheaper parts (hence ) failure.

Prolly just 3 ohms cause that dont appear to be the 13 as I know alpine doesn't and looks like a dual box doubt he routed new circle for the jl sub if it were a 13 which only has the dvc either way what a shit video per the title should have been 2 subs flexing
how is this a comparison?lt A comparison would have been 2 seperate tests of each speaker measuring the spl of both using the same tracks and power output of the amplifier. You would also want to have them in their own boxes built to spec.
I have never tried the JL's but I used to have 2 type R 12's with dual 2 ohm coils I believe. They were pretty stinkin loud. My Solo Barracks were louder though.
I just swapped 2 type R for 2 W7 and I actually liked the type R better. The w7 pounded a little harder, but the alpine just sounded better in my opinion
I currently have 2 type R 12s sitting by the wayside because I upgraded to a set of Incriminator audio Death Row 12"s that hit harder and sound better than my type Rs ever could. I'd argue that my DR's probably hit harder than a set of overpriced JL w7's. W7s can take 1k rms while my DR's can take 1500rms each and cost 1/3 the price of a w7. IA next step up is the Death Penalty that has the same xmax as a w7 and still costs half the price with twice the power handling. JL truly is overpriced crap.

Correct, that was Alpine's idea behind its newly released R-Type 12inch sub competing with the MTX 9500 sub back in the early 2000s. Alot less sloppy bass than the MTX 9500 and the Kicker Solo Baric L7s. A few years later came the stupid expensive JL audio W7 12inch sub and the almost as expensive Rockford Fosgate's top T2 12inch sub.

The W7 should have a 1.5” thick mounting surface, you can see in the video that it’s not even tight to the box. 1700x1 is not putting 1700 into each. I could go on and on..... I was at a Skar dealer and out the door for everything I wanted with Skar was about $4200 and with Alpine it was $2300. And I'm comparing products comparable to one another unlike in this video. And as far as Sundown I don't want to say things about that which I have no knowledge. That being said I'd love to give them a try because I see now they have a huge following. I've always been a JL and Mmatts guy though. Imo you cannot beat a Mmatts amp. Even their subs were great! I don't know about their subs in 2020 but in the past fantastic products especially the amps.

Actually, the new type r is 1000rms, and black cone. This gray cone older model type r is lower rating. There were a few different versions over the years, mine were rated 500rms. A buddy of mine had a 15 and those were higher, I think 750 but could be wrong. The one in the video is not the 1000rms version though.
Obviously the JL is the superior sub but I like them both type R’s can get loud if set up right as can JL but the JL isn’t meant to be a spl sub it’s a sql sub and it’s one of the best at what it’s designed to do.

What I mean is the performance, durability, bass and sound quality along with the price makes it one of the very best subs in my opinion.. there are much better subs out there but but not for the price.. Alpine did great with the type R

Kyle Knight for 700 I would never buy a w7, they arent worth it, not to say it isnt a good sub, but jl is way too proud of themselves. The type r will push 1500 rms all day without rebuilding it, and for 140, its one of the best subs for the price. But the type r has one design flaw, both coils run out 1 side of the spider, making one side stiffer than the other, which means its prone to failure at max excursion, but as I have said, it takes a lot of power to get it to bottom out, so normally its good, you just cant really compete with them in the heavier stuff, where they would otherwise belong.

Iv owned a few different model alpines in the past and still have a set of em that I no longer use. But I had the alpine type E 12"s the white cone with the Black E in the middle and honestly they hit hard in a sealed box flexed the windshield we had em on a clarion 1200 watt mono block and they took it no issues for a good while then I sold em and ended up picking up the alpine type X 12s and holy shit was they loud lol I had them in a Virtual technologies vented box on two Skar 2500s and I ran em for about two years off and on. You can't go wrong with em even the entry level old type Es took power and slammed.

These two subs couldn't sound more different in person. Proud w7 owner, my boy has those type R 12s. IMO the Rs don't sound natural at all. Worst part is upper end around 65hz-80hz, punchy bass isn't smooth, material of cone partly to blame as you can hear the plastic sound on harder punches. Impressed with the lower end, thats Def where these subs shine. JL on the other hand is smooth and natural sounding throughout all frequencies. Even the punchy bass wasn't lost when going ported, whereas the alpine IMO just sounded bad at 45hz and up in the ported. Coming from a lifelong alpine fan, long before I got into jl. I love the older alpine decks, and their components, namely the type r 6.5s are very impressive, but Their subs have continued to worsen over the years. For the record I was comparing two type r 12s in a ported box (1.5 per chamber) vs one 10w7 in the jl HO box (1.25). Again, just my opinion.

And to Slick S I agree with you on lots of points especially the old school Alpines the 7909 is legendary I loved the 7390 back in the tape days. And I agree that W7 sound better but they should look at price tag! I think JL is over priced and over rated! If one is talking about SPL Competitions NO ONE RUNS JL ANYTHING! For SQ yeah there alright no better then alright but not worth anything close to there price tag! For that kind of money there is far superior subs for even less lots less! I've been installing for years first time I heard of them was I had to build a box for (3) 8w6s first gen and after I was done next day I went and bought (3) 12w6s I loved them back then they were expensive but now they have lost there minds! DC Audio, Crossfire, Hutchinson just quickly of the the top of my head all have far better subs for less! And what they put out depends on what you put them in sealed or ported what they are tuned to etc. But I must say JL has the BEST shallow mounts I've ever heard! I have friends who are at opposite side of spectrum I have a friend who runs all Mosconi power to Morel Supremos and another friend who just dropped $12,000 on (4) 18" Pride Audio subs powered by 56,000 watts of B2 power. So I know people on both sides of car audio which doesn't make me anybody but I went to school for mobile electronics installation in 1995 so I've been around some. But this is just my 2 cents.

I ran two 12w6v2 sealed and it was one of the best setups I've ever had. Price tag is a little too much though. Thankfully my 13w7 has lasted me over a decade, and I just removed it from my ported box, so I can hear it sealed.

All I see is W7 flexing alot more than the R12. Both good subs, but I'd say the R12 is far more durable.
The 12w7 is actually far more efficient. It hits just as hard but doesn't need as much power. My previous 12 inch subs always dimmed my headlights, but my 12w7 is good on the same amp. Headlights never dim, and it's slightly louder and 50x cleaner than my older Kaption SPL1200s which were 600 watts rms each.

A W6 would've been a better comparison as both the R and w6 are gearing for SQ. And have very similar power handling numbers I've had both subs and I can tell you that W6 sounds better but the alpines are built well , they look amazing Also the Motor ,casing and surrounds are much better , love the Kevlar surrounds they're phenomenal

That box is too small for the w7 possibly the type r too. I had a w7 12 inch and the ported box took my whole trunk also the w7 sounds way different when powered by jl amps. First i had a 1200 watt brutus amp then switch to a 500/1 and the w7 hit much harder and bass notes were tighter. It blew my mind how an amp can change the characteristic of the sub

I tell people all of the time that if you're not going to buy a JL slash amp you shouldn't buy the JL subs. Much cleaner and deeper bass with a JL amp.

Alpine can't compete with JL. JL is worth every penny. Been using JL in all of my vehicles for 19 years now. I owned the W7, 13.5 and the Slash 1000 1v1. That thing was an absolute nightmare... in a good way😂. I'd never turn my back on JL. Their products have never failed me.

Its pretty clear that people are partial to the brands they like and know of but for those that dont know these are both very good subs . The alpine will handle more power overall but the JL has a more forgiving spider compliance and surround to accommodate its cooling factor. In this video, it's like comparing a sundown vs. An orion hcca. I'm currently using a Type R for my test bench in a sealed box around 1.4 cubes give or take and it get low with 400 watts rms . Got it from a friend of mine who had it wired @ 8 ohms yeah 8 ohms lol to an Orion hcca 5k . That amp does 3k at 4 ohms on a test bench at 14.4 volts lol just to give you a ball park of what it does at an 8ohm load. That one Type R could be heard a block away in his van in the sealed box and the gain was just shy of being all the way down. So yeah the type R s love power and the blow because of too less power or bad signal such as clipping. Just to get you heads thinking. Excuse any typos. But you get the picture.

If there's a sub that JL Audio W7s or Rockford Fosgate T2s would fear is the sadly discontinued JBL W12GTI MK2 12 inch sub at $799. Its a dual 6ohm, 4000 peak & underated at 700 rms, Kevlar paper cone, Nitrile-butylene surround, 3" voice coil, frequency response of 18hz-1000hz, max sealed box volume of 1.0 cubic feet, max ported box volume of 2.25 cubic feet, top-mount depth of 10-1/4", cutout diameter of 11" and very sensitive at 91db which most 12inch subs are in the 80s in db. I can only imagine what level this JBL sub would be as a current improved model today.
Agreed. I had one in a custom made ported box tuned to I think 30 or 32 hz. In any case, it was amazing and could get really, really low bass, still very loud. I miss that thing! I ran it on an Alpine MRX-M110 800rms amp, and tuned it with the oscilloscope. Thing was perfect
I replaced 2 of my type R's with a single W7 with JL's HO box. The w7 is a far better build and sound quality is superb. But then again we're also not comparing apples to apples.

With 2 W1 12's people could not believe that little amp beat those 12's like it did. I would tell them it was the combination of the CLEAN power and the efficiency of the W1 subs... It's hard to beat JL stuff when used together.
I recently bought a Hertz WX38 (first generation.. with an orange emblem and an orange “magnet”, who can say how much more interesting this jl 7 sounds than my hertz, or whether the hertz is still more musical than the jl7?:) if we compare at the same volume! And if you compare two Hertz WX38 against JL7, who will come out the winner? :)

The two twelves alpine type r I had hooked up to my 1000/1 v2 slash, it bumped no doubt just like any low quality sub with decent power, but the 12 w7 will eat both of those for dinner and you know it.... the louder the dub 7 the cleaner the bass, your music must be 45 hz and up to appreciate a type r, but if you live life 30hz and below 10, 12, 13.5 w7 cannot be touched with the small amount of power feeding them....

I don't know what fasteners you used, but I'd recommend 1/4" or 5/16" lag screws and a bead of urethane windshield sealant.
I just ordered the w7ae-3 with the jl audio high output box built for that sub and when I was reading up on the anniversary edition there are 20 patents on it one being for its proprietary screws for the anniversary edition amd there are 20 of them the old w7's have 14

so this isn't a showdown of SPL it was just a test to see if each sub could handle a hyphonics amp. a real comparison would be to test each woofer max db on the same amp to so which outputs more.
pound for pound cost, quality ( sound and max rms and peak whats ) the type r is best but for more peak rms and power the best is the w7 by far so it depends in the defenition of best !?
I used to run 4 alpine type R DVC 12's (gen 1 with round surrounds not the pleated like shown in the vid) in bandpass enclosures, in the trunk of a 93 Taurus SHO, blew the trunk lid off, literally, the metal fatigue around the latch on the lid tore it out after a few weeks. I was running a JL 1800 D class monoblock with controls, and a Power acoustic active X-over with a tewakable boost curve from 33 hz to 80 hz, about 40 or so was optimal. the DVC Alpines were Banging. I then went to 2 10 W7's (Gen 1), computer modeled ported enclosures (33 hz was the port tune) and those things were over the top cleaner, louder, and more musical than the Alpines, and took up less than half the space. The JL's hurt . with the system i had you couldnt sit in the car at 3/4 volume. and it was clean.. multiple Polk audio front and rear stage mid bass mid range and tweets. Gel cell batteries and about 3 farads of capacitance. Still have most of the equipment, but i am old now so it sits in the closets (yeah one closet isnt big enough) plus all of my "trial and error" purchases that i didnt like.

The JL is only meant to run 3-1.5 ohms unless they use a slash or HD JL Audio mono amp to push the W7 it won't be optimal to be fair they both should be ran in their optimal 3ft enclosure and turning . I run Hertz,Audison,JL,Brax and Helix audio. All quality equipment ,the saying ( You get what you pay for)is very true. I been building systems almost 30 years now and have yet to find better audio quality than the 5 audio designer's I use. Well Brax and Helix are sister company's so they may only count as one . He'll come to think of it I believe Hertz and Audison are sister company's as well. Alpine isn't bad if you buy the European built equipment. Then the price doubles., But it will last for more than a few minutes, hours,days,years. You never know. Back when Alpine and Motorola where partners they built quality . Now it's more quantity and cheaper parts (hence ) failure.

how is this a comparison?lt A comparison would have been 2 seperate tests of each speaker measuring the spl of both using the same tracks and power output of the amplifier. You would also want to have them in their own boxes built to spec.
I have never tried the JL's but I used to have 2 type R 12's with dual 2 ohm coils I believe. They were pretty stinkin loud. My Solo Barracks were louder though.
I just swapped 2 type R for 2 W7 and I actually liked the type R better. The w7 pounded a little harder, but the alpine just sounded better in my opinion
I currently have 2 type R 12s sitting by the wayside because I upgraded to a set of Incriminator audio Death Row 12"s that hit harder and sound better than my type Rs ever could. I'd argue that my DR's probably hit harder than a set of overpriced JL w7's. W7s can take 1k rms while my DR's can take 1500rms each and cost 1/3 the price of a w7. IA next step up is the Death Penalty that has the same xmax as a w7 and still costs half the price with twice the power handling. JL truly is overpriced crap.

Correct, that was Alpine's idea behind its newly released R-Type 12inch sub competing with the MTX 9500 sub back in the early 2000s. Alot less sloppy bass than the MTX 9500 and the Kicker Solo Baric L7s. A few years later came the stupid expensive JL audio W7 12inch sub and the almost as expensive Rockford Fosgate's top T2 12inch sub.

There about 50 things wrong with this “comparison”, starting with the enclosure is obviously not tuned for BOTH. The W7 should have a 1.5” thick mounting surface, you can see in the video that it’s not even tight to the box. 1700x1 is not putting 1700 into each. I could go on and on..... But everybody knows a W7 will murk an Alpine Type R. 😆

I know this for a fact bc I was literally 1 second away from buying all Skar products before my last system and I choose Alpine. The cost made way more sense to me over what I was getting for my money. Keep in mind this includes amps as well so I guess I'm off subs and directly into the company. I was at a Skar dealer and out the door for everything I wanted with Skar was about $4200 and with Alpine it was $2300. And I'm comparing products comparable to one another unlike in this video. And as far as Sundown I don't want to say things about that which I have no knowledge. That being said I'd love to give them a try because I see now they have a huge following. I've always been a JL and Mmatts guy though. Imo you cannot beat a Mmatts amp. Even their subs were great! I don't know about their subs in 2020 but in the past fantastic products especially the amps.

The Alpine hits hard but it has too much mechanical noise the JL Audio is soft and less forceful but nonetheless clean and low

The JL IS rated 750 and the type r is rated 1k. both rms and both underrated.
Actually, the new type r is 1000rms, and black cone. This gray cone older model type r is lower rating. There were a few different versions over the years, mine were rated 500rms. A buddy of mine had a 15 and those were higher, I think 750 but could be wrong. The one in the video is not the 1000rms version though.
500 watts of CLEAN power, is FAR better than a "1000'' watts from an inferior amp.

Obviously the JL is the superior sub but I like them both type R’s can get loud if set up right as can JL but the JL isn’t meant to be a spl sub it’s a sql sub and it’s one of the best at what it’s designed to do.

If you want to be technical all subwoofers/speakers are made the same they have a magnet, coil, cone area, Omega, power to weight, ratio root mean square blah blah blah.
