    I think that the origin for the basilisk's weasel weakness is the observation of mongooses and cobras.

    • @carlosalbuquerque22
      @carlosalbuquerque22 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Pretty much.

    • @ludwigvr3212
      @ludwigvr3212 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yeah, seeing as dragons were fairly synonymous with snakes I think this is definitely the answer. Also in “The priory of the orange tree” they have a creature called the ichneumon which is basically a giant mongoose. And as far as I can tell that’s supposedly their name in medieval mythology as well. And that version makes a lot more sense

    • @sandradermark8463

      me too
      Mongoose VS. King Cobra. It's even called KING cobra and it wears a hood (the basilisk's crown). And mongoose (mongooses? Mongeese?) are impervious to cobra venom...

    • @daddyleon
      @daddyleon ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t you think that this is the entire reason for them putting the mongoose v snake in the script?

    There's a similar story about the basilisk in the cellar in Warsaw: One day, a baker's daughter in Vienna was getting water from the well, when she noticed a revolting smell. It was a basilisk. The baker asked men to get down there and fight the beast, but no one dared. No one except his own apprentice (who of course was also in love with the baker's daughter, because what good story doesn't have romance in it?) The baker agreed that if the apprentice could vanquish the beast, he would let him marry his daughter. So the apprentice went down into the well armed with amirror, turned the mirror to the basilisk, and the basilisk, ashamed by his own appearance, turned to stone.
    And then thw two married and lived happily ever after.

      Boil the body thirty-seven times, replacing the water each time. Then remove the organs and poison glands. Then boil the body another thirty-seven times, replacing the water each time. Then cook the basilisk meat as you see fit. Each boiling has to be for at least half an hour, or until half the water has evaporated.
      If serving to children under the age of fourteen, boil the body another twelve times before organ removal and another six after for every year under the age of fourteen.

      I laughed so hard when I saw that! Now we need to get Nintendo to add a basilisk and weasels. It fits with current game mechanics: elemental enemies can be destroyed easily by using the opposite type of damage. Could be a secret boss that's only easy to defeat if you know about weasels. :D Of course, now I'm imagining fusing weasels to arrows.

    Why?
    Back in the early 70s, I had a bf who was in the Navy and stationed at the local Naval Air Station (NAS), and serviced the engined on the aircraft. Everything from jet fighters to the P3 Orion sub-chasers, which were prop jets. NAS Moffett Field, now Moffett Federal Airport, is atvthe south end of San Francisco Bay.
    The stories bf told about the problems of cleaning chopped and diced seagull remains out of the various engines! And all raw, too.

    Basilisks are metaphors for various Plagues. Plagues are spread ba rodents. Weasels were used to get rid of rodents, before Cats were imported from Egypt.
    Since Basilisks (Plagues) were less likely to spread, when weasels were around, that clearly means, that weasels kill Basilisks.

    Fun Fact, we could actually use gigantic space mirrors either to cool down earth or to help make mars more habitable (as an escape option, less ideal though of course)

    So the idea with the weasel and the basilisk probably comes from the musk glands. This is a common trait of the family mustelidae which encompass weasels, ferrets, mongoose, and wolverines to name a few. These glands are used to attract mates but many prey of the mustelidae have learn to flee from the scent. I'm not sure about snakes but rodents like mice and rats certainly do.
    One story my dad told me was he had this big ferret named Mr. Pitiful. He was the most harmless ferret you'd ever seen but he wasn't "descented". Most ferrets you see now in pet stores have their musk glands remove because the odor is very strong and unpleasant. Mr. Pitiful was before this was common. Anyways one day rat had infested the grain stores and were destroying everything. So what my dad just threw Mr. Pitiful into the store room. The rats getting his scent panic and started fleeing out of the store room out in broad daylight. Mr. Pitiful just sat there possibly a bit confused watching what was going on. He didn't chase much less kill any of the rats. Just his musk alone saved the day.

    The Basilisk, NOT to be confused with it's very similar, more feathery cousin The Cockatrice
