IcePhysics Can you really blame him though? He’s already admitted he’s a huge fan of Koji Kondo, so getting a manuscript straight from Nintendo of one of Koji Kondo’s more famous (practically legendary at this point) pieces is probably a pretty big deal for a video game composer like Grant.
Sure. I just find it comical that, from the company's perspective, they were merely sending a minor correction but on the other end, it was a much more significant event.
"I thought 'i'm going to be hated for the rest of my life" Sadly, that are the words of someone who knows exactly what the general internet is like. Good thing he proved everyone wrong. His music in this game was awesome.
You just made me realize: Sonic AND Mario are both getting their first Sega and Nintendo officially approved fan games in the same year. That's pretty cool, not gonna lie.
You know, maybe it's insurance for the future. Shigeru and the original Nintendo crew can't work on Mario games forever. Same with Sega and Sonic. But those franchises will hopefully last forever. Maybe it's the companies dipping their toe in and asking "can other creators make games that hold up to our franchise's legacy?" and it's working out pretty well so far.
Kenji Shore if you read the interview at the end of the official zelda artbook, the same kinda thinking is done with artists. the amazing art of skyward sword and breath of the wild is done by an artist who was three when the original came out
I'm really glad that the internet seems to have turned around on this game. When it got leaked months before its announcement, everyone was expecting the worst... But it it looks like a real labor of love, in all aspects!
What an amazing opportunity that presented itself. I couldn't imagine as someone who did the classic N64 RARE soundtracks for Goldeneye and the BK series, a game like Mario 64 or Mario in general at the time was on an untouchable pedestal from Koji Kondo that he would never imagine getting an opportunity to work on. However all these years later he gets to re-imagine these official Mario tunes and put his stamp on it. Grant continues to work hard and have that giddy optimism for every new project, but its projects like this that probably make his career, make him feel like a kid again and let him live his wildest dreams.
Sheesh Javed you're quality always blows me away. Whenever I need inspiration for animations for my own stuff, I hit up your work. Also, I'm not sure how Nintendo does it, but everyone they work with seems like they are genuinely cool and excited people, at leas in interviews. There's something about working on the type of games Nintendo does, or a corporate ethos or something.
Hepyrian i also think it has a lot more to do with Nintendo's pedigree. Most people the age of our developers and composers grew up on Mario. Unlike the divisions of opinions of some gamers today, it's hard to find an experienced creator connected with videogames that doesn't hold the highest reverence for Nintendo and their history-making contributions. Including all rivals. Thus we've seen just about anybody jump at the opportunity when Nintendo wants to collaborate on something. It's basically like being figuratively asked by Disney to score their next big blockbuster. To young TH-cam-loving gamers, they're just another company. To the devs, videogame composers, and creative directors (including ones under Microsoft and Sony), the house of Miyamoto is a living legend.
So did Myamoto find himself in an elevator with the director of Raving Rabbids and decide "Let's do a crossover game because why not." I hear that's how strange crossovers happen.
Good Blood yeah, apparently Square Enix and Disney had offices together in the same building and a couple of heads found themselves in an elevator together. And then Kingdom Hearts happened.
This is why you always go with someone like Grant or David Wise instead of someone like Lorne Balfe. You WANT someone who treats it like the most important thing in the world and not just a soundtrack for a kids videogame.
I had to listen to the bit at 0:05 like 20 times before I understood even half of it lol. Also this video is actually amazing, like seriously brilliant editing. Going to have to check out the rest of your stuff now.
I first heard of it as Mario Rabbids Xcom and I was super doubtful but then it turned out really really good and the Grant Kirkhope compositions is the icing on the cake.
This game is fantastic and the music is superb. I didn't know that Grant had made the soundtrack when I first played the game, but I instantly recognized his unique style, so I looked it up. Sure enough, it was this genius of a composer who yet again was gracing my ears! Thank you for making such great music. 🎶
So basically... Grant heard he was working for a rabbids game and was like "well my kids like it so why not" and when he heard it was mixed with Mario, he was like "...you're...you're serious aren't you?"
Fantastic video, gonna jump straight into the interview now. Grant and the team's passion for this game has me so hyped for its release. Keep up the good work, the level of polish on your vids is inspiring pal
Hey man, randomly came across you're channel and really love how you put this together. Everything from the build up at the end when Grant talks about "when i stop getting giddy is when i should retire" to the smaller visual jokes like when Luigi is supposed to represent how nervous Grant was feeling. Definitely earned a new subscriber.
This guy is called "Good Blood". Clearly, he's a pure blood. Sir, it does not matter whether you are a "pure" blood, half blood or a muggle born. No wizard's family has not mingled with muggles, to quote Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.
I loved this video! Great work, it was so eye opening to see the passion behind this team of developers. Can't wait to check out this game and more of your videos :)
I once heard a saying that Mario odyssey is a love letter to the fans and i totally agree the music compliments it perfectly with the level design and everything else i just wish i could get 1
Great video, no doubt Rareware was home to very talented composers like David Wise, who wrote music for Donkey Kong and Snake Pass, and Grant Kirkhope with Banjo-Kazooie and now Mario. I hope to see these gentlemen in many other games in the future.
Playing Mario v Rabbids my first and most immediate thought was... wow, it's really impressive how much Kondo's music elevates Mario games, because boy oh boy, does it's absence hurt this thing.
Talk about a great shock. Being told you are going to write music for a Rabbids game. Which is cool in itself. Yet then the bomb is dropped on you. Oh it is a Mario game too. Yeah. No, freaking pressure.
The great thing about Mario's OG OST is that its practically perfect for Mario in every way, even his newer OST's incorporate the original as a foundation to work off of Koji Kondo really knew his shit man.
2:53 Super Mario Brothers was not Mario's first game. Literally ten seconds of research will tell you that. Plus it's pretty common knowledge within the video game community.
Lucatin I don't usually reply to defend myself but yeah: Super Mario Maker dropped in 2015 in celebration of Mario's 30th Anniversary since his debut on a Nintendo console in 1985 which was Super Mario Bros. Obviously Mario had games earlier on arcade machines like Mario Bros which dropped in 1983 (32 years ago in 2015) but that's not what this video is talking about at all.
Yes Donkey Kong and Mario Bros aren't directly related to the topic of this video. You're right not to talk about those games in this video, I wouldn't expect you to. But you stated that Super Mario Brothers was Mario's first game. When you're wrong you're wrong. I would like to add that I did really like your video. I learned a lot about Grant's involvement with this game that I did not previously know.
congrats to grant and the rest of the team on making such a polished and well executed game. tbh i'd love to see them come back to make a similar style game combat wise but with the splatoon franchise.
After playing the game, I can safely say the soundtrack is great! Has this nice combination of wacky/crazyiness to you it you expect out of a game like this, with some serious bits here and there. Works well with a turn-based strategy XCOM-like game like this.
Been writing music for 10 years and when I saw that Nintendo sent him the official sheet music, I cried. Grant wrote... Banjo Kazooie and DK64-- fuck, HE IS DONKEY KONG! -- And nintendo actually sent him sheet music for Mario. I could not think of anyone better to write for a game after all these years. They truly picked the right guy. Nobody else was suited for this.
We're about to see something special in the upcoming Mario & Rabbids game.

Seriously, I got glee and fanboy when the soundtrack is in Spotify.
Too bad it was shit. lel
I could listen to Grant talk forever about making music for games.
I could listen to his music forever
I could listen to *Grant* forever.
Same.
5:15
Nintendo: You did it wrong. Here's how it's supposed to be.
Grant: NINTENDO SENT ME SHEET MUSIC OF THE GAME OVER SONG! I'M SO HONORED!!!

"I shit myself, basically."
-Grant Kirkhope
Andreas Nordvall That's why I love that man.
That's good shit right there
tombstone quote
Huh, even someone like Grant Kirkhope can be humbled in the face of someone like Shigeru Miyamoto. I love stuff like this.
You *cannot* look at Miyamoto and not be humbled. It’s physically impossible.
@b Where did you get to speak to him?

"I thought 'i'm going to be hated for the rest of my life"
Sadly, that are the words of someone who knows exactly what the general internet is like.

Oh my Glob they are! That's amazing! How did I not realize that?!
I was going to ask "so, the CD-i games don't count?"
But then I realized that the answer to that question is obvious.
What's the Mario fan game?

*Goes from epic theme and super hero landing to*
“So I shit myself basically”
I'm really glad that the internet seems to have turned around on this game. When it got leaked months before its announcement, everyone was expecting the worst... But it it looks like a real labor of love, in all aspects!
It sure can get challenging too. It's a great tactics game with or without a Mario sheen.
I absolutely LOVE your short documentaries on video games. The production value, passion, content, analysis; amazing.
Please, more of these!!!

Seeing this reeeeally makes me want to play the game and Grant Kirkhope seems like such a good dude! Great job, as always.
When Grant says Mario is like video game royalty and that old Mario commercial pops up I’m like “Yeah, no kidding!”.
its really strange how this game about rabits got loads of passion poored into it, just because Mario is in it.
And it turned out to be a surprisingly good game
Sheesh Javed you're quality always blows me away. Whenever I need inspiration for animations for my own stuff, I hit up your work.

Excellent as always, I'm still not sure how you don't have millions of subscribers at this point.
Cos this is a bad rip off vox video XD
So did Myamoto find himself in an elevator with the director of Raving Rabbids and decide "Let's do a crossover game because why not." I hear that's how strange crossovers happen.
That's how Kingdom Hearts started right?
+Hakan Cakir
Thats the joke.
Hakan Cakir Woah really? I didn't know that.
Good Blood yeah, apparently Square Enix and Disney had offices together in the same building and a couple of heads found themselves in an elevator together. And then Kingdom Hearts happened.
Haha I get it.
Man I fricking love Grant. What I wouldn't give to meet him.....
Junuh You wouldn't give a chance to meet grant to get a chance to get grant
Well played my good sir
Legowegogo one could be 'granted' a chance to meet Grant.
This is why you always go with someone like Grant or David Wise instead of someone like Lorne Balfe.
You WANT someone who treats it like the most important thing in the world and not just a soundtrack for a kids videogame.
David is such a grand compositor and Kirkhope a wise man, from them gold music always granted
I'm surprised I didn't find this video sooner. It definitely deserves more than 27,000 views.
Yeah it suddenly popped up in my recommended videos and I was really happy for that. I hope it gets more popular, now.
The production values of your videos and your milky smooth voice are very well done, good job m8
This is so Vox that i wouldn't be surprised if you do videos for Vox
Even the same music at the beginning!
Such a likable guy. What a joy to listen to him talk.

So people CAN get work from linkedin?
Quang Tran ikr
Quang Tran Only if you’re already a big fucking deal apparently
Nah, this is is clearly just a LinkedIn ad, don't fall for it!
PS. Gord bless Grant Kirkhope and his outrageous melodies.
Javed, I have so much respect for you. Your editing is outstanding. I'm floored with every bit of content I've seen that you've been a part of.
I first heard of it as Mario Rabbids Xcom and I was super doubtful but then it turned out really really good and the Grant Kirkhope compositions is the icing on the cake.
Another great video. I enjoy your content dude. Keep it up. :)
I thought this was going to be about some kind of controversy to do with the soundtrack. Needless to say, I'm glad it wasn't.
Grant kirkhope did an amazing job. Quite possibly my fav peach's castle remix. The mid boss theme is still my fav in the game
I wanted to hate this game but I can't
It's actually a pretty good, actually. Like a family-friendly version of XCOM.
Same by the end of world one I had accepted I’m gonna enjoy it so much
love your videos man, you're one of the unsung heroes of the internet.
This is incredibly cool! I didn't even know that Kirkhope was a part of this game. Good job showing how this might be a pretty special game.
This game is fantastic and the music is superb. I didn't know that Grant had made the soundtrack when I first played the game, but I instantly recognized his unique style, so I looked it up. Mario + Rabbids is one of the finest works of Grant. Period. That game has an absolutely brilliant score.
Dk64s "Mermaid palace" is Grants most beautiful work. It is the most pure inspiration of nostalgia for me.
It really is beautiful.
Fantastic video, gonna jump straight into the interview now. Grant and the team's passion for this game has me so hyped for its release.
Keep up the good work, the level of polish on your vids is inspiring pal
The music in mario+rabbids is a MAJOR high light of the game! Once again he nailed it. :)
Grant's motivation is so inspirational, he always seems full of energy and happiness.
Wow, what an amazing video! Originally I was only searching for the OST of the game, but I was not disappointed.
I'd argue that smash was the first Nintendo approved Mario fan game, since it was developed by Hal Laboratories.
I'd even argue further and say that Super Mario RPG was the first fan game. Square Enix I believe
I'd argue Mario Is Missing! was the first Mario fan game. Special mention to Hotel Mario for the CD-i.
I think it may have been Punch-Ball Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. Special.
Hey man, randomly came across you're channel and really love how you put this together. If Koji Kondo is the king of video game music, Grant Kirkhope is the Hand of the King.

love how infectious grant's enthusiasm for mario's musical legacy is
imagine having to meet the expectations koji kondo had placed
Wow, I just discovered this channel. Great editting, quality and interview. Amazing work!
He knocked it out of the park
"Ooh, me knacka."
Ah, memories.
Grant Kirkhope is a pure treasure that must be protected at all costs.
Grant Kirkhope is such a treasure
Mr. Kirkhope fears he can't fit in the footsteps of Mr. Kondo... i'd say he can, definitely.
I think Grant also lends his voice to certain characters in this game too. :D
Great video, no doubt Rareware was home to very talented composers like David Wise, who wrote music for Donkey Kong and Snake Pass, and Grant Kirkhope with Banjo-Kazooie and now Mario. I hope to see these gentlemen in many other games in the future.

To be fair Mario appears in both Mario Bros and Donkey Kong before Super Mario Bros
Awesome Edit. Awesome video. Great Grant Kirkhope :)
Hearing how passionate everyone who worked on this game was, it really makes me want to buy it whether I play it or not.
I adore Grants passion and excitement for his work! It really shows in his music!
i got this game dirt cheap a couple of months ago and i still havent had the chance to give it a go
4:19 Nearly had a heart attack, I thought Nintendo shut down Super Mario 63.
2:53 Super Mario Brothers was not Mario's first game. Literally ten seconds of research will tell you that. Plus it's pretty common knowledge within the video game community.

when he received the game over music sheet from Nintendo, I really feel the emotion he could get.
You are amazing! i love your videos so much. pleas dont stop.
Mario’s first game, Mario Bros.? Well, I guess if you start counting from home consoles and not arcade.
I really need to get this game.
He hadn’t put up the pictures I made him
Holy crap, an Australian TH-camr talking about video game stuff. Now that's refreshing to me.
Bless Grants humility after all these years. What a lad.
And this is why Grant Kirkhope is one of the greatest composers of all time.
i just realized the guy who made my favourite zelda video about subtext made my favourite music video about one of my favourite composers.
nice shit.
So much passion and energy. awesome.
Hated? Grant’s music is superb! Although I can get how he would feel anxiety for that
yeah the passion in this game is real.
congrats to grant and the rest of the team on making such a polished and well executed game. tbh i'd love to see them come back to make a similar style game combat wise but with the splatoon franchise.
if he did the music for this game I'm going to buy this game after I'm done with kh3!
Grant kirkhope stands right up there with Koji kondo in my opinon.
Yahoo! Super Mario Games will still be fun
This was a great video. Well done.
In my opinion, Kirkhope knocked it out of the park with the game's soundtrack.
You are like a low budget A Great Big Story. Love it.
I didn't get this game. It didn't interest me, but now that I know Grant made the soundtrack, I'm tempted to buy it after all
A REALLY weird crossover indeed
But you'd be surprised how amazing it is
Great vid, great interview!
I think this is what the sound team at SEGA feels whenever they get to make the music for a Mario & Sonic at the Olympics game.
After playing the game, I can safely say the soundtrack is great! Has this nice combination of wacky/crazyiness to you it you expect out of a game like this, with some serious bits here and there. Works well with a turn-based strategy XCOM-like game like this.
Dear Seega
Lol
He's so passionate about what he does, it's inspiring

Great video! (Also hello fellow Aussie!)
I previously left a hate comment on your sonic redesign video, I now regret it. Nice video!
