Since there are a million videos on TH-cam about this turntable, let's take this one speed by speed and compare the differences in sound quality between records.
I'm restoring my 1019 that I inherited from my dad now. He bought it in 1969 in either Tokyo or Hong Kong (I'm sure he told me but I don't recall) while in the navy because he'd decided to get out of reel-to-reel and switch to vinyl. What sold him was the store displayed this turntable playing records on its side! It was the main turntable in our home from 69-95.
It should be noted for the musicians among us, that the 16 speed record players back in the 50's and 60's were used by many of our musician heroes of today to learn how to play their instruments. 16 rpm is close to half the speed of 33 1/3, so what people like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck (plus plenty of jazz musicians) did was to play songs from 33 1/3 albums at 16 rpm. Now at half the speed, it allowed them to better hear exactly what was going on, even if an octave lower, while playing along.
'16' is actually 16-2/3 rpm, EXACTLY one-half the speed of the 33-1/3 rpm LP. That is not an accident or coincidence; that speed was chosen specifically to allow 16-2/3 rpm records to be mastered on existing 33-1/3 rpm equipment (the audio was played back at double speed to the record lathe operating at 33-1/3 rpm. Later on, many record companies invested in proper 16-2/3 rpm equipment in an effort to make 16 rpm records sound a little better, but due to the physical limitations of the speed, it still never could match the sound quality of the existing 33 and 45 rpm formats.
The most solidly build TT ever made by Dual. Platter is 7.5 pounds but as it's only less than 10 5/8 inches in diameter it's thicker and less resonant. It's also made of zinc instead of aluminum in the later models like the 1229. There were even more beefy tables than this like the Thorens 124 which had a 12 pound platter made of cast iron with aluminum sleeve. But for the money and great sound quality you can't beat these Duals. Buying a refurbished 1019 or 1219 instead of a new table is actually a much better idea. Both will sound better than most anything made today for under $1000.
I own a Dual 1226, it's completely restored now, but when I found it, it was sitting in my aunts dusty, cold basement for 14 years. These things are built to last forever, the Dual turntables are built to work by default, that's why to me anyway, they surpass any, any other turntable on the market in the past or current.

+Patryk Malinowski Actually it's more accurate to say that they were very much OF their time. No special sophistication to Dual tables for the 1960s. In fact, most products from that era were very high quality.
@@ghsgtnayhmd4792 They were indeed . I got my 1019 when I was in USAF stationed in England 67-69 I got it at the BX for about $35-$40 I'm sure it was not much more than that. I sold all my stuff in 1972 what a DUMB mistake! I just bought a Dual 1019 off ebay and man I could not be more happy. I will pass this one down to my family.
I've had one of these for about 40 years, it's an excellent deck. I've got many decks including TD124 Mk2. The 1019 is the quietest idler deck that I have come across. Surely, to play 78's, one need a larger stylus. I use a Shure M75 ED fitted with a N75-3 stylus.
These Duals were certainly well built turntables. I was lucky to find a 1009 on ebay. Very similar to the1019 except the automatic spindle (a necessity for those multi-78 albums) is longer and holds more records. I had the spindle rebuilt and everything still works perfectly. If you find one of these grab it. They're worth repairing. Most turntables today (the cheaper ones) are plastic JUNK! IMO. The decent ones are expensive. Of course if you have collectible 78s you might want to invest in a good quality cartridge that accepts both LP/45 and 78 styli. I use an Ortofon which accepts an LP stylus and a 78 stylus. The 78 actually cost more. Worth it to play them correctly. 78s need a bit heavier tracking force. I use an Audiophile Archival Preamp where I can switch from LP/45 equalization to the correct 78 equalization curve that was used when these records were recorded. It does make a difference.
That's nice. I have the Dual 1009, which is almost identical but lacks antiskate and manual cueing. It's in dire need of tlc though. I think that Seeburg record is meant for one of those background music systems they use in large shopping malls etc. Of course these days it's all digital, but back in the day they used vinyl records. Also, if you want good sound quality from a 78rpm record, you need to use a stylus meant for those records. The grooves on them are wider than on LPs or 7" singles.
Picked up one of these in excellent cosmetic condition today for $10! Plays fine in manual but if you move the lever to start, it does nothing and the lever is stuck there. Have to spin the plater to get it to release. Even the dust cover is in damn near mint condition
It looked like the Seeberg record was smaller than 10 but larger than 7. I love my Technics SL Q3. It doesn't have pitch control, but for what I use it for, it's been rock solid over the years. I know it doesn't have the four speeds, but you can actually use Audacity software to change from one speed to another to accomodate the recordings. Also, you would probably want to find a 78 stylus for it for proper sound of a 78 rpm record. If that's an elliptical stylus, it would be very tough on the groove of the 78. It is definitely a tank of a turntable, though. This Dual does definitely have some nice features. Thank you for sharing.
Am i the only one that am looking for someone to have fun with different speeds, like i used to when i was a kid? Trying to show my kids what 'fast forward' and slow motion really sounds like, because there aren't any apps to replicate what a record player could do
I wish I have that model because it includes 16 RPM speed. I don't have a 16 RPM record but I just want to have a turntable that includes that speed. I remember during my childhood years that we had a turntable that includes 16 RPM.

It tracks done to 0.5 grams, something that most turntables today CANNOT DO !!! Add a Shure Dynetic Cartridge (0.75 to 1.5 grams tracking force) for NIRVANA!
Dear Databits, I have an $10 Onkyo CP-1100a turntable that was missing a belt so i used the belt from my ION profile LP but It was running Extremly slow, I think, even though I'm 14 it is the result of ungreased motor. PLEASE HELP!
Could you just PLEASE provide me the name of the song you played off the 78? Nice turntable, by the way! Shame you don't have an original stylus for the Pickering cartridge. Perhaps Tonar has them in their Line-up (obviously those will be imitation styli, but they're quite good)?
Help! My 1019 has slow sleep and I have lubed it. It all looks great and all works except the speed. I already tried to adjust the spindle height but I can’t anymore or else it hits the platter. Please help.

Wow...I didn't know that Dual had been around that long......really, I thought they were a rather new company making car audio equipment....but this is one nice unit!
That cartridge takes a standard Stanton 600 series stylus please get a new one, even their new cartridges use it please buy a new stylus for it Stanton and Pickering are the same company and they are still making styli for these! :) I believe their newest cartridge is the 680 but it uses the same stylus just like my big old HEAVY Pickering cartridge I use on my 78 turntable (but it tracks at 3 grams, physical weight is heavy and big, tracking force is very light) they track best for stereo LP's at 2,5 grams.

Gary Chapman It may be running slow because: 1. The motor in your Onkyo is bad. 2. The belt is too tight.
the dual is automatik. It has also the STOP funtion. Why do you always all manual?

grassulo Okay fine, I got a new stylus. But only because you said please. In fact, I got two new ones...one for 33 and one for 78.
13:45 I presume that 78 is a vinyl not shellac because didn't hear a hiss despite you didn't replace the stylus.

No I think not. I have a Dual 1229 and the rubber sticks to the plate pretty hard. No need to change it anyway. Why would you put cork on there?
