  • I was about 18 or 20 when I danced this. I gave the video a sepia look because I felt it suited it. Technique: New Zealand Academy of Highland & National Dancing. While many dance this in soft shoe the NZ Academy version is a hard shoe dance. Condition reflects that this was originally on VHS.

This is so cool! I have never seen it dance without the soft shoe, but love it with the hard shoe. Great rhythm too. Thank you for sharing

This is the first time I've ever seen highland dancing as hard shoe!

This is really quite cute! I know that NZ does many dances differently than the rest of the highland dancing world, but I didn't realize that meant different shoes too - they almost look and sound more like Irish dance hard shoes. Beautiful footwork and timing! I love how the hardshoes really accent this. The dancing is impeccable! And I love how you've treated the video with a sepia tone - it matches the music really well, almost feels like we're watching some 1930s or so historic footage. Lovely dancing, hope you placed well!

What type of hard shoe was used? Is it similar to a Scottish jig shoe or an Irish hard shoe?

Piping and dancing association of NZ jig shoe rules: Shoes: Low-heeled black shoes, preferably of the brogue type with hard leather soles. A single firmly affixed heel and toe plate are the only attachments permitted on the leather soles. Surfaces other than leather are not permitted. Buckles must be worn.
