    Hi again Ashley,
    I drive huge distances across the entirety of Europe, I'm glad you've made this video as the UK's driving standard on motorways is abysmal. While most of what you said is correct, your lane discipline is still wrong. You should move back to lane 1 as soon as you have completed your overtake, regardless of traffic conditions. I say this because you cannot control the speed of people behind you. While you may be doing 70mph, there may be someone who wants to do 100mph, and while it's illegal, it's not your place to impede his progress. You sticking in lane 2 so somebody can pass in lane 3 is all good, but if that guy is then going 70 he's forced to slowly pass you while the 100mph guy is held back, while lane 1 is empty and you could be in there, and the other car in lane 2, with the faster car in lane 3.
    While I understand it's illegal in the UK, it isn't in other countries, and you can't expect drivers to never drive outside the UK.

      Ian, it's not causing any harm and as said many times you should be watching the conditions. If it does start to cause issues than as said move over.

      @UC7gwxJ6fFt7Fre5Wdh_Ud8g The definition of lane hogging is denying the ability for someone else to make progress in that lane. No-one behind = not lane hogging. Not keeping left as stated in the HC is another matter. It says "Should" not "Must" stay in the left lane. That means it's up to law enforcement to prove you're "carelessly driving".

    How to drive on the motorway.
    1. The speedlimit is 90mph if you own a BMW Audi or Mercedes and 70mph for lesser cars
    2. The left lane is the slow lane limited to 56mph the middle lane is the driving lane for all cars traveling at 67-70 mph and any cars that want to go faster stay in the fast lane, lane 3.
    3. Cars on the slip road have priority over cars on the main road so make sure you barge your way on by any means possible.
    4. To enter the motorway you must swoop from the slip road to either lane 2 or lane 3. If there's vehicles in your way f**k them, swoop anyway and pray you don't hit them.
    5. Red X's on smart motorways mean drive in that lane you get bonus points for hitting a traffic officer doing their job.
    6. When leaving the motorway don't use the slow lane to exit. Swoop at the last second, bonus points if you cross the hatchings.
    7. Finally the stopping distances on the motorway are less than one second so make sure you're close as possible to the vehicle Infront of you.

      Agree except No 3. Some days there is no option but to almost barge your way on. I was once behind a car that actually stopped on the slip road because there just wasn't an opportunity to 'slip' on and join.

      And make sure you don't drive faster than your guardian angel can fly (unless you're in a Merc, Audi or BMW)

      There is an option - stop.

      If necessary that's exactly what you are supposed to do. It's a give way line. Obviously you would seek to avoid this by planning, moderating your approach speed, holding back to give yourself acceleration room for a later gap, but ultimately you have to give way to traffic on the main carriageway. If stopping is the only way to do this, then stopping is what you have to do.

      Well obviously some cars are far more stable on the roads, with complicated braking and suspension systems than others but there's still no guarantee their drivers brains move as fast as the car, fast reactions don't guarantee fast hazard awareness.

    I can’t explain why it bothers me, however, even after 31 years driving I DO feel bullied sometimes. I know I’ll move out of the way when I can, I know I’m not going too slow or blocking lanes on purpose, I know I have every right to be there, so why do I think about this so much? I cannot explain it! It’s almost like I’m thinking “I’m in the way, I must move”, when I really don’t have to as long as I’m driving correctly.

    There's an awful lot of "dashcam chaos" type videos on the internet these days, showing everyone what *not* to do. There's not enough, in my opinion, of *this* type of video in which a normal and correct style of driving is demonstrated. Even without the verbal commentary, simply showing what continuously good driving *looks* like could be a very valuable resource.

    man i passed my test about 6 months ago and yet i’m still here, watching quality videos to keep myself fresh!
    i do about 3 or 4 motorways journeys a month, but this still helps with lane discipline. cheers my man!

    My dad is retired HGV driver and he taught me to look in your mirrors all the time, like you said incase you have to change lane quickly. Dad also said you know when a police car is about because all the cars are doing the speed limit 😄.

    Excellent content and commentary throughout. The only observation that I would make is that not signalling a lane change could always leave you vulnerable to the hazard that you have failed to observe, no matter how careful you are, and appear on a future driving fail video!

    Thanks Ashley for another top quality educational video. It brought back memories as I used to be an ambo in the Lancashire area and travelled and responded to some serious RTCs in that area. You remind me of my advanced driving instructors back in the day. Keep up the great work you are doing as I am sure you are improving people's driving skills and that can save lives.

    Great video, Ashley. I learned to drive at a more mature age, shall we say :) have been driving for 4 years now, and still haven't been on a motorway! So, these sorts of vids are great for me. I'd love to see you make more of these 'Drive like a Driving Instructor' videos, they are v motivating and informative. Cheers!

      Debbie, when you do, don't go 70mph or worry about sticking to 70mph. I promise you, life on a motorway becomes 10x easier when you're slightly faster than everyone else. Just try it once. Definitely don't dip below 70, because suddenly you get a lot of people catching you, surrounding you etc. A qualified driving instructor wouldn't broadcast this on a video, but, just trust me. Cameras won't even ping at 74, so, err on the fast side... but most importantly - match what everyone else is doing. Motorways are about flow, if everybody went 70, they would come to a stand still, so many experiments have been done on this.

    What I like to do is get up to a decent cruising speed of 85mph, flick cruise control on, then get nice and comfortable and read a good book until I reach my destination. My destination is usually a multiple pile up half a mile up the road.

    Also, in more positive fashion: your advice on not sticking in blind spots is absolutely fantastic! the amount of idiots I see sitting next to lorries doing 56mph consistently and never moving any faster astonishes me

      Especially when some lunatic who needs to save a second when he exits at the next junction will drive up the inside of a lorry in lane 2 and sit there for half a mile, precisely at the same time that the Kia picanto that the lorry pulled out to pass decides to speed up from 53 to 58.

      Also driving along side others for any length of time restricts that driver from being able to change lane or move over in an emergency.

      @@marklittler784 If you don't know if theres someone in your Blind spot , then speed up or slow down. The one in your blind spot is very unlikely to copy the speed you are doing. Anyway you should have seen the vehicle before it got there.

      @@marklittler784 If you're in lane 2 and want to move back into lane 1 what would you do. What is do is look in my left mirror well in advance of the change and keep checking for at least 60secs. If I stilk didn't see anything I would increase or reduce speed along with indicating well before the change. But I don't have blind spots. A cheap pair of stick on blind spot mirrors solves the B.S. problem.

    I think one of the things that builds my anxiety on the motorway is constantly feeling paranoid "Should i be in that lane now?". The way you explain is basically to stay relaxed and if you are overtaking something in the distance, stay in your lane. Don't jump across even if you get tailgated.
    I know one day i will be in the right lane overtaking and some 90mph prick will be up my arse. Nowhere to go, the guy will have to slow down.

    ‘The cruise control is an important tool so do use it’ Ha Ha Ha. My car doesn’t even have air conditioning, or a 6th gear never mind cruise control.

      @Sharon Reilly Air conditioning probably needs a regass but what's wrong with winding down the windows? Read your handbook you might discover something useful. After three years of owning an Audi avant I discovered if I held down the button on the key all the windows and the sunroof would fully close if they were open. I just don't know how I drove over 260,000 miles without that great but unknown feature.... I felt cheated. Thanks Audi :-)

      Paul Fro - I have no option but to roll down the windows on my car. It was 41 when I got on the other day and took a good 25/30 minutes of driving with all the windows fully down to get it to drop to 36. It didn’t get any cooler. I think it’s the only time I’ve ever really wished I had air con. It was unpleasantly hot.

      I know that feeling... Got a 15 year old car - air conditioning is remove the hard top and keep the soft top down. Don't even have remote central locking haha

    Hi Ashley yet another fine video with points that we should all take onboard. Everyone I have ever taught was always told about the escape route and the importance of continuous all round vision to hopefully keep that escape route. As you point out motorways are some of the safest roads we have, but a mistake can be leathal, then it is not a case of who’s in the right, but who’s LEFT.

    Hi, I have really enjoyed these instructor videos and many others. I have recently passed my ROSPA advanced driving test, silver grade and found your videos really helped me. Keep the videos coming they are extremely informative and helpful. It was my lack of confidence on the narrow country rds/ lack of progress on them, that cost me the gold grade. I always have lacked confidence on narrow country rds though.

    I don't know if this is a valid consideration, but my motivation to overtake is always a bit more when the vehicle in front obscures my view of the road ahead (as the white van at 17:20 does, for example). I always like to keep an eye on what the traffic ahead of the vehicle in front is doing. Also, it's another reason why I like to keep a good distance.

      Yeah notice how your view ahead improves considerably on a motorway that meanders as opposed to flat straight sections so accidents are probably far less on those sections of motorway.

      Of course vehicles that obstuct your view are a danger anywhere especially when parked, one reason for accidents is people not seeing things another vital one is people not hearing things, a window down has its advantages of hearing traffic, but a loud stereo they hear you ! 😄😃😂

    One of the worst behaviours on a motorway/dual carriageway is cars coming off the slip road. 90% of drivers do not adhere to giving way to the motorway traffic - they think they have priority to join lane one and won't slow down or give way if motorway traffic can't move over to lane 2/3 - in ideal conditions cars coming down the slip road will increase speed to join lane one - but it the motorway is busy they will not slow down and will expect motorway traffic to give way.

    Whilst I understand why you don't signal when there's no one around to benefit, you're not going to convince me to stop signalling (except for pointless roundabout signals perhaps). I do try my absolute best with observations and situational awareness but I will always cater to the off-chance that I miss someone, or for the lowest common denominator, such as a bike speeding past at 150 mph on the left side, just to do everything possible to decrease risk. It's also one less thing to think about if I just have a habit of indicating every time. This is a fantastic video nonetheless, and the roads would be a much happier and safer place if everyone cared as much as you do about driving.

      @@robvanwijk3085 the danger of course is the habit people get in to, is signalling and just performing the manoeuvre without looking properly. Observations should be sufficient before putting the signal on to know whom the signal is going to help and how long it needs to be applied before beginning to move. 👍

The way to be sure could be too see if you *don't* require a signal. But hey, I've only been on the road for over quarter of a century, what do I know. 🙃

    Couple of years late but cracking video. Passed my test a few years ago now but still learnt a few tips. They didn't teach motorway driving
    (not sure if they do now) so came in useful thanks.

    Another good video. See a lot of signal while maneuvering, rather than signal then maneuver. I have been a passenger across a lot of European motorways and their driving standards aren't great in a lot of cases either - but in all cases with the amount of traffic now on the road compared to the amount of accidents, we don't do badly at all. There is always room to improve. Keep up the good work

    I never change lanes when I'm parallel with someone... For example if I'm in lane 1 and someone else is parallel with me in lane 3, I won't move in lane 2, even if I'm signaling ahead , just because I don't trust the other person won't do the same thing without checking.

    Great video.. first time on the motorway today after passing my test.. all good, my only issue was the fact that I felt my 1.2 litre Corsa lacked the power to overtake quickly and cars were coming up quickly behind me in the overtaking lane..
    I need mere experience, especially dropping from 5th to 4th and accelerate quicker and also checking blind spots before changing lane, so much more important than normal city roads.

    Just two points I’d like to make. 1/ I know you are a long way from London, Ashley, but it would be very useful to see a drive round M25 at some point. 2/ I think it’s useful to mention that when going back to a previously high set cruise control speed, using the cruise control button, the car will attempt to regain that speed as soon as possible, thus resulting in hard acceleration. This could catch the unwary out! It is advisable to use the throttle pedal to bring the speed up to that which is preset on the cruise control more gradually, then reset the cruise control.

    Well done, and no doubt useful for many people. A couple of minor comments:
    Until recently, I used to be more selective as to whether to indicate lane change moves, as you were, but the car I normally use has a ‘lane departure’ warning gadget, so I tend to keep it quiet by using the indicator for that reason only. I know it can be isolated, but it can be useful sometimes.
    I know the section you used did not have ‘variable speed limit’ kit in use, but when it is, it’s now tolerable to pass on either side, so as to avoid unnecessary lane changes (which would reduce road capacity), if there is a slower queue in the lane to your right, and it is always wise to indicate left if you plan to do so on those sections of motorway with it in service.

    Remember people, the phrase *You should always* in highway code rule 103 means "not every situation" if you use the driving instructor dictionary, or drive a German car.

    When a motorway separates into different lanes, I always hold back if a car in front. I tend to think people are not very good at planning ahead and reading signs so don't want to be side swept as passing a blind spot

    And those are the two big things for driving on the motorway, building up speed fast well before you have to merge in from the slip lane and ensuring you have ample spacing between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. For the former, you want to build up speed fast early on because you when you have to merge you want to match your speed so that you merge in smoothly (i.e. leaving plenty of distance ahead of your car and behind your car), coming in hot gives you room to adjust your speed in either direction, coming in slow and you're stuck in no man's land, go slower and you're impeding traffic, go faster and your vehicle has to rev up. The other thing I like to do is shift as lazily as I can during the merge. Much better to keep the RPMs up in the 3000-4000 RPM range for acceleration purposes than to be sitting at 1000 RPM bashing the steering wheel as your vehicle struggles to reach 60. Once on the motorway though that distance is crucial. I can't tell you the number of times where having that 5 or 7 second gap between the vehicle in front of me saved my bacon when coming up to a congested stretch of motorway, it can literally be the difference between a light application of the brake and a 5 car pile up, especially in Ontario.

    Hi Ashley really enjoyed this video but after a lot of year’s driving class one hgv and 34 years as an adi I don’t enjoy the 70 mph drive anymore. Sometimes I work 50 miles from home 40 of which is M way I like to stay in lane one 50 mph on cruise control and let the world go by. Between 7/9 am it’s a rat race going north M1 , by the time I get to my destination my car is doing 70+ mpg and main thing is I’m not stressed out. It take me 10/15 longer at 50 but I feel the benefits. Keep up the great videos speak soon Keith Butler

    Ive been driving 5 years this aug and i really struggle with spirals ashley. I know you've done a video but my head goes blank on them. Looking back my instructor was very lazy in teaching me these things. If I had my time again id of learned with another instructor. Why cant they put in the effort like you do. very good vid regardless.

      Not everyone has common sense; so need reminding. Hence the advisory speeds on corners. It's also useful for lorry drivers with heavy loads. The adviced speed is an indication of the sharpness of the bend.

      Kris Nicholson I think they apply more to HGVs and trucks to give them an idea that the bend could tip them over if they kept at National speed limit. Cars don’t have the issue as much. But the general rule for a car is you should be able to brake as far as you can see, so don’t take the bend blindly

    if your in the middle lane and your coming upto 2 lorrys in close proximity to each other think lorry that's behind the other lorry is going to overtake especially if the road is going on a slight incline and the lorry driver behind will want to keep the momentum going and will overtake most of the time if he has more a bit power than the lorry in front.
    it is best to go in the 3rd lane even if the lorry does not overtake the other lorry in front that are both in close proximity.
    Sometimes lorry drivers indicate just as you get nearly on them, so a good thing to overtake a lorry in the 3rd lane if nothing is behind you just in case.
    Don't forget lorrys cannot use the 3rd lane.

    Am I really watching a 40 min video on highway driving for a country I don't even live in? Heck yeah 😅 I really do appreciate these narrative type videos where you talk through everything that you observe/different options to keep in mind at all times. The highways that I frequently use in my state only have two lanes most of the time, so I am always nervous to try and attempt a lane change as the people in the far/passing lane usually "bully" people out by going 80+ mph. It is honestly nerve wracking to have someone try and force you over to the "slow" lane at such high speeds when you're trying to overtake huge tractor trailers.... honestly we are all going to end up at the same stop light at the next exit anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️

    While making progress in lane 2, and catching and overtaking people in lane 1 occasionally in light traffic thinking that other people can overtake you by using lane 3 you must remember certain vehicles may not use lane 3. This can be a problem on roads like the M25 where in busy traffic generally occupying two lanes a tipper with a small trailer starts to tailgate a lane 2 user who is oblivious to why the lorry is a bit miffed and wont use lane 3.

    Good video. As a biker that one at beginning made me cringe. I hit a car at low mileage in Feb. Full gear and still managed to get broken ribs and bruises on my legs. Passed test this week so just use car now.

    4:28 did you signal right to go into the left lane? those last minute lane change markings on the road always confuse me i always get tripped up especially when its unfamiliar area. Something my instructor didnt teach me only in town driving.

    I live in Norfolk so not very close to any motorways at all. My first time driving on one was the M11 and onto the M25, time we got to the M25 it was rush hour and to top it off we had torrential rain - baptism by fire!

      Nothing like being thrown in at the deep end. You have my sympathies though, the M25 can be a bit of a challenge. It might be an idea to book a motorway practice session with a driving instructor just to give you that bit more confidence.

    Another useful video. A couple of ideas. I would avoid moving to the middle lane from lane three when level with a lorry in lane one. I move when lane one is empty. Just seems the safer option. You can never be 100% sure of what drivers in lane one might do next. Also i think moving to lane one when there is a slip road joining is another potentially dangerous manoeuvre. I'd say just don't do it!

    As somebody else on here commented this is advanced driving. Driving in other countries as somebody mentioned, is different, so we have to know what to expect and be prepared for it. As long as good vision is used front and behind on motorways and other roads. Another example is on a Chris Gilbert Driving4Tomorrow DVD, Eyes on Main Beam, whilst he is driving on the three lane M4, he says: ''while in lane two nobody behind me to come past, one overtaking in lane three, not holding anybody up, not a lane hogger so I'll stay where I am, because it's the best position. There is a large gap behind so moving to lane one is a waste of time, it's bad driving, but if anybody wants to come past I will move to lane one. There has been no new offence created such as lane hogging and tailgating, they fall under careless or inconsiderate driving. Police now issue fines for careless or inconsiderate driving. These offences have previously been dealt with in magistrates courts. Since this change it's been noticed that some drivers have become lane one divers and weavers, by returning to lane one and then diving back out again when the road behind is clear. This law may be applied if
    drivers are travelling at too low a speed which impedes other drivers''. But remember good vision, mirrors as well, whilst driving in the situation explained.

    Something that pees me right off is when your merging onto a dual carriage way or motorway from a slip road and there is someone inside lane flying at 80,90 or a Ton and don't move over to let you in. Happens quite a lot where i live.

    Most times you haven't got an escape route. Being rear ended or side impact or in a pit manoeuvre gives you little or no escape route especially in outside lanes.

    If you go on the motorway you should always fill up as you might encounter a large traffic jam due to an accident etc.
    It's a good idea to hog the middle lane if nothing is behind you for lots of reasons such as a better view behind and if a slip road appears on the left with heavy traffic in it you are already in the right lane.
    Also if a wild animal darts across the motorway you can go either side.
    Another if somebody is on a motorway bridge and throwing things of it you have either side to swerve if nothing is behind.
    The only bad thing is if a light plane has an emergency landing coming up behind you lol.

    I have passed my test 5 months ago, and I’ve been driving in my car for about 4 months now but I’ve never beed on motorway because it actually scares me a bit. Unfortunately soon I’m gonna have to go on one and I have a question. Is it ok to stay on left lane all the time, even if i have to slow down because of the vehicle in front of me? Will that cause any danger? Like doing 60 ish on motorway and staying on the left lane all the time without overtaking?
    I think I’m gonna take some lessons on motorway to build some confidence, but I’m just curious about my question.

    Hi Ashley, You still haven't answered the question previously put to you on overtaking on left. Lane 1 doing 70mph catching up on lane 2 doing 60mph. Is it legal for lane 1 to pass on inside? It's a simple YES or NO answer.

      Yes, it is perfectly legal to pass on the inside. If it were illegal then you wouldnt be able to make progress in slow moving traffic when lane 1 begins to move and lane 2 remains at a standstill.
      It becomes illegal when you move from lane 2, undertake then move back out to lane 2.

If your weaving in and out of lanes you would be charged for dangerous lane changing rather than undertaking, not forgetting do you are also overtaking too.

    Ashley, i did not watch the whole video but do have a couple of questions that may have been answered. Having overtaken a vehicle in lane 1 and you are now in lane 2, what is the maximum time reasonable to stay in lane 2 before catching another vehicle in lane 1? does it depend on traffic in lane 2 behind you? Would you move from lane 1 to lane 2 to over take another vehicle in lane 1, if a vehicle already in lane 2 would catch you, before you have made the overtake of a vehicle in lane 1? If no, you may get boxed in by other traffic in lane 2 passing you, does this change your answer? Both these things were in the video but I did not see if you covered the answer

    Excellent video Ashley. I was hoping to see how you dealt with Lorry drivers who put on a signal to change lanes whilst you are overtaking them. My solution is to use the horn to alert them of my presence as they are clearly unaware I am there, otherwise they would surely wait until I had overtaken them before signalling their intent to pull into the middle lane. Any thoughts?

    Hi Ashley, really like these videos. I still struggle with motorway driving.
    What do you do if you’re in lane 2, passing an ‘on’ slip, and a lorry in lane 1 indicates to come into your lane to let cars on from the slip ? If you can’t move to lane 3 or ease off without braking, what’s the best thing to do? Also on that note, would it be safer to not be actively overtaking anything in lane 1 when you are in lane 2 approaching the slip ? or would that be classed as hogging / holding people up ? Thanks

      better planning and awareness needed, usually where there is an off slip theres an on slip, plan early to be in lane 3 way before getting to the on slip, therefore the vehicle in lane one can move to two without you obstructing.

    Few comments on this brilliant video:
    1. Aircon blowing up the front window keeps my cheapo nextbase camera cool.
    2. S&FE/eco set your cruise control to something slightly higher than the HGV limiter: 62 is good. Any slower than lorries and you'll constantly have your braking distance stolen resulting in slowing down and speeding up again.
    3. For blindspot, seeing the mirrors isn't sufficient: see the face. Look for EU reg plates.

      So you’re limping along at 62 so trucks can’t overtake you, but what happens when you arrive behind a truck that evidently can’t go as fast as you, pull out into lane 2 or 3 (because it’s not unheard of one truck overtaking another) still at 62MPH? It’s a limit not a target, but hey everything in proportion...

    if the middle lane is telling you to use it to get to your destination you cant use the inside lane cuz you'll end up going another way altogether and in glasgow some of the motorway to head to edinburgh the lane i need to use is the middle lane and the speed limit overhead show about 40 and 50mph so im gonna do 40 or 50 in the middle lane of a motorway. can you do a video about this next time to give some clarity

    Even on the rare occasion without any other vehicle behind you, if you remain in the middle lane after an overtake, you are lane hogging if a vehicle in lane one is some distance away

    I too have driven many miles over 40 years, and i find the standard of driving in the UK has dropped. Once driving north up the M1 from London at 4.30am i crossed the M25 and and proceeded north, a car came out from the on slip and immediatley went across to lane 4 and stayed there doing under 60mph, i was doing 60, and passed in lane 1, that car stayed in that lane until i was out of sight, the motorway was completeley empty. All i can assume is, that their Sat Nav was telling them to keep right, which some of them do, the driver did not understand that it really means keep out of the designated left lane ahead, in this case Hemel Hempstead. this is very common on the M25 with the smart motorway system. The sat nav companies may need to look at their wording info as some drivers forget to use their own judgement and common sense.
