I commented about a week ago about loud fan noise when gaming on this laptop (Asus Strix Scar II). There haven't been any driver updates from Asus , but for some reason fan noise is working the way I expected it to. The only thing that's been updated on my Asus laptop was the nVidia driver, some new one came out a few days ago. Not sure if that was it, but I'm finally enjoying the laptop the way I wanted to. Silent mode is very silent and performance seems to have improved there as well but balanced mode works with acceptable fan noise finally. I haven't tried Turbo mode, which I assume will ramp up the fan back to what I hated, but I'm just glad balanced profile finally sounds "balanced". I've been playing games on my laptop for almost 4 hours and the fans haven't gone crazy like they used to. I'm really happy about my laptop. I've played Overwatch , Diablo 3, Destiny 2 , Fallout 4 and Anthem today. There was some update I needed for Anthem and when I loaded in, it gave out a touch more fan noise but that game isn't the best optimized as far as I know, for some reason the performance was terrible when I loaded in today but after a minute everything was working smooth again.
Balanced mode works great. In hotter environments in the summer you may need the Turbo mode which is quite loud, but so is an all higher end gaming laptops. There is also the silent mode which is indeed very silent.
@@chrisc767 sounds like you got the newer version with the hardware encryption feature. (called "Keystone") With this you can create a special folder that is locked when this gadget is not connected to your laptop. So it is actually a physical encryption key, to protect your sensitive documents in case the device is stolen or lost or unattended. www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1039692 BTW, I have been gaming in full speed with my Strix II in Silent mode works fine, just the heat is high, but I noticed there is little difference compared to the balanced mode, and a slight difference compared to the Turbo (super loud) mode . So no big deal, feel free to play in Silent mode, and you get that little extra oomph in Turbo mode. I suppose the Turbo mode makes more sense if you overclock your device in which case you may generate more heat.
Wow Asus just announced the new version 3 of the Scar and Strix. Just two weeks after this review. Hopefully they'll send you a couple units for review.
I got one of these a few weeks ago. It's a great laptop. Just get a second stick of RAM. Oh, and the second hard drive cable is included. It's in the box with all of the literature. They don't install it from the factory. I used it to install a 2TB drive.
How do you adjust the fan speed? Mine get really loud on Balanced, Silent is great for sound but throttles performance quite a bit, I'm looking for a chunk more performance and wouldn't mind like 50% fan speed. Balance doesn't seem balanced to me, performance feels like 95% of the laptop with 90% fan speed. Silent feels like 30-40% performance with 30-40% fan speed. When I adjust fan speed in Armory crate, the laptop might START at 50% but it will always go up much higher.
That's a really unlucky undervolt you got on those. Im able to get a -.120mv pretty easy. I locked the CPU core at 3.7ghz and overclocked the gpy by +120mhz. This thing is faster that my GTX 1080 desktop.
I have just bought GL704 and it is freaking awesome. Relatively thin and it has powerful full RTX. Only one thing I have replaced is secondary HDD. Otherwise all the specs are fantastic not to mention that alluminium looks great. Great for my working purposes (3D modeling, Unreal engine etc...) also gaming :)
I bought this laptop recently and I kind of regret my purchase. The performance is amazing, but the fan is just too loud on Balanced and Turbo. Otherwise, it is thin and light.
Glad they decided to go back with dual graphics. I do occasionally use mine (Scar II with 1070) to watch netflix in the airport and it doesn't last long at ALL.
The best review of the GL704's I have seen, picked up the GL704GW 17.3" at newegg ($300 off right now). A full GPU (means fan noise, ok). Do you like that Patriot 2nd memory module? I'd be curious what model/number 16GB stick it came with to match latency and chip architecture *if possible please provide that info (anyone)*.
I have this laptop and ill have to say I love the tall chin. At first it seems unappealing and the camera placement is awful but its functionality of lifting up the screen more towards eye level helps with neck strain a lot when compared to my last laptop.
I just got the 17" model of this laptop she is reviewing the other day. I'm a desktop geek for gaming and video work, so I am super uptight about my temps. Although I won't game on this laptop ALL the time, when I do, I see the temps in the high 80s. It would briefly peak at 95c or 96c but usually hovered around 88C while playing titles like GTA V. I even have a 3 fan cooler pad under it. For $1800.00 I am on the fence about if I should keep it or not. They say these mobile Intel chips are built to withstand these temps, but I know the general rules for computer components. It's kind of bothering me.
@@liberty610 I have an Asus G751 JY and I know these machines run hot. The fact is at least the one I got is bulky and has what's needed to take down these insane temperatures, but this Scar 2 is thin and the vents are loud af, yet temperatures are crazy high and the result is throttling for any extended gaming session. Yeah, it will not melt, but throttling will badly hurt performance in the long run. Honestly I'm just waiting for Ampere next year, this gen is disappointing from every point of view
@@sm4sh3d I am on the fence about it. I have a return window of 30 days I believe with Newegg. I really do like the overall feel, look, and how it runs. And I have done nothing but research this temp topic all week, and every single reviewer talks about the temps being normal for these kinds of machines. I personally don't mind the fan noise if I am wearing headphones, but my concern is the longevity of the unit. I expect to have to buy an updated laptop 3 to 5 years down the road, so that is my target time period I would like this one to last. The build quality is really solid, especially compared to the MSI Stealth model I tried earlier this year and absolutely hated. Idk... I am on the fence with this. Not an easy decision when you part with $1800.00. I read a lot about re-pasting the chips, which I can do, but Idk if I want to take a chance on voiding the warranty by doing so.
@@liberty610 well these chips are made to run hot so I wouldn't worry about a meltdown, what bothers me is the fact that they really care more about esthetics than cooling and performance. Maybe a repaste with liquid metal will help but whenever your cpu hits 95 C it will downclock, and unfortunately that's gonna become a standard scenario in time. However if you aim at replacing it in about 3 years, you might be fine with the performance until then. I will personally wait for Ampere 7nm at this point, this generation didn't convince me (a 2070 laptop is like only 15-20% faster than a 1070) and I'm not spending 4k euro for the top tier machines to have proper cooling
I was able to get better temps on it today. I didn't realize that the ambient temp of the room I was in the other day was as high as it was. Gaming on it for a couple hours today, it spiked at 90c, but it generally stayed in the low to mid-80s, even with GTA V. I still plan to repaste it down the road, and once I make an official decision with the return window, I'll upgrade the ram to a dual channel 32gb kit.

However with NVMe option there are eGPU solutions, only thing is choosing between Wifi card or SSD slot to use it.

Wifi card differences? I'd like to see Mobile TechReview do a video on the differences, and why care? For example if on DSL wifi at home, at what speed will I notice a difference? What's more important, wireless router, or computer card speed? How can you balance or optimize what you have available? Stuff like that would be helpful.
Howdy I've got the GL704GV-EV022T model, it has the RTX 2060 inside. Fantastic laptop. I upgraded the m.2 drive to 2TB Samsung m.2 and 32gb of RAM in dual channel. Even better again. Out of the box perfect price/performance ratio. All of the games I've played are running at max specs and high frames per second.
I had the 17.3 rtx2070 model. I like everything about it and had added a 1tb Samsung EVO SSD. It did come with the cable to connect a hard drive to the 2.5 bay. But, I ended up returning it because the fans were so loud. I decided just to replace my Alienware area 51 with a new Alienware. I got a good deal from deal and much more powerful machine with the rtx2080 OC and OC CPU.

Solid review. Good to see a woman doing her thing. I feel like I don't come across enough tech reviews by women. Maybe I'm watching the wrong ones. Glad I checked it out.
Thank you for the review. I bought my 704 from microcenter 3 weeks ago and it came with the hard drive carrier, and the sata data / power cable combo. Ok I just noticed the issue with your 704. You have an hdd cage. You just need to unscrew it and mount your 2.5inch drive in it. That’s what I did. The sata/power connector should be in the laptop box.
Thank you for pointing this out. I thought that the Upgrade King channel that she got the laptops from said the same thing. Mine comes in tomorrow. I hope I made a solid purchase.
Great Review! Asus provides some gaming laptops with good price to performance ratio and pleasing design. The latest Zephyrus however seems pretty shocking!
She shows where the module is, and how to remove the base panel. I think that the 'Tech Finds' channel had a more detailed video of taking the panel off etc.
Hello I have a question about the 15.6 inch version. I bought an M.2 drive to install. The 512GB SSD that comes with it, is that the larger square plastic hard drive that comes in by default meaning there is an available M.2 drive slot for an upgrade? Or is the original 512GB hard drive an M.2 drive and then there's an open slot for the larger square plastic SSD? thank you very much for your help.
I have a laptop finally arriving in a couple of days time with i7 8750H but now I’m worried with the recent intel gen 9 cpu announcement. Should I make use of the 14 day return option to send it back and then rebuy with the new cpu? I’m not sure how quickly bench marks will come out.
to put a single 16GB module instead of 2x8 is a healthy trend, everyone should do that so that you can upgrade without throwing away ram modules, 16GB for a lot of people now ain't enough. a thing that I can't understand is why they make 4:3 laptops with 16:9 screens, that's so stupid, why's that huge chin instead of some more screen real estate?
How do I adjust the fans manually? I couldn't find that option. The manual option in Armorycrate will set the starting fan speed but the laptop still goes crazy loud after 10 minutes of gaming. It would be really great if I could set the fan limit or manually throttle performance to reduce fan noise.
Will the laptop underperform with an external hdmi connected 1080 p monitor? If the resolution is set the same? I am planning on buying this but leaving the laptop on a cooling pad but using external monitor and keyboard. Also planning to upgrade to 32 gb ram with dual channel ( current ones seem to be single channel 16 gb stick!
Would there be a performance difference using a Seagate Firecuda 1TB SSHD in the drive Bay vs using an M.2 Data SSD using and adapter for the M.2 to Sata III adapter?
From Asus website and I can confirm it can do Gsync: DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K UHD output at up to 75Hz, and ensures compatibility with G-SYNC-enabled monitors.
Average temperature of 85c is really not that impressive. I am having a MSI GS60 laptop with 970m graphic bought 5 years ago. The average temperature was about 80c when it was new. However when the cooling system got older (fatigue of cooling blade, dust or whatever reason), it can no longer maintain 80c but shoot up to over 90 or even 100c.
Jardine Davies Villar yes, 3D rendering is present in most games today so yes whatever gives you more frames on a game, gives you the same effect on 3D rendering programs
i always hate throwing out 2x8 to uprgade to 32, so made perfect sense to me to have just one to start, it did make a noticeable improvement when I went dual channel

@6:31 i had to hear that twice,,
Wifi card differences? I'd like to see Mobile TechReview do a video on the differences, and why care? For example if on DSL wifi at home, at what speed will I notice a difference? What's more important, wireless router, or computer card speed? How can you balance or optimize what you have available? Stuff like that would be helpful.
Do a video on good linux laptops having i7 H series processors.
You can install linux on any computer...
There is no such thing as a linux computer.
Really good reviews channel. You got a well deserved like, comment and a new subscriber. Keep it up gal.
Howdy
I've got the GL704GV-EV022T model, it has the RTX 2060 inside.
Fantastic laptop.
I upgraded the m.2 drive to 2TB Samsung m.2 and 32gb of RAM in dual channel.
Even better again.
Out of the box perfect price/performance ratio.
All of the games I've played are running at max specs and high frames per second.
How did you install Windows 10?
Windows Media creation tool or OEM windows 10
Did you download the drivers from Asus website?
@@aravindr4986
I used a desktop with 2 m.2 slots in and cloned original 512gb to the 2tb.
Aaron Kivell i have rtx 2060 too but why when playing bfv my fps 50-70 .. im using single channel.. should i upgrade and did it make improvement?
@@sugarglidermalaysia7847 yea made huge difference to load times and graphics and fps stability.
@@sugarglidermalaysia7847 Yes, upgrade to dual channel memory
That bottom bezel is MASSIVE, holy shit! WOW! Glad you mentioned it, too! LMAO! Love this, as always! Kickass review!
If gaming laptops have small bezels at the bottom, will the heat from chassis damage the display in the long term?
It is big; however I don’t notice it. I actually prefer it as it bumps the screen higher which is better, for me at least.
Greetings from Poland!
Hello from Russia
Hey from UK
Good looking outer shell!!
I wish the battery was bigger and they removed the HDD bay
I had the 17.3 rtx2070 model. I like everything about it and had added a 1tb Samsung EVO SSD. It did come with the cable to connect a hard drive to the 2.5 bay. But, I ended up returning it because the fans were so loud. I decided just to replace my Alienware area 51 with a new Alienware. I got a good deal from deal and much more powerful machine with the rtx2080 OC and OC CPU.
Why are Asus replacing the physical numbers which are very convenient for most people with a number pad??
these models prices USD2,602 both 15" & 17" here in Qatar...i supposed to buy one yesterday but i'll just wait for the Strix III to come up, maybe Strix II price will dive somehow.
1,899.99 on amazon right now.
Those beefy RTX series cards aren't cheap, I'll tell ya that!
I got the 17.3" version with the RTX 2070 for $1799 from Microcenter.
0bsolete-X couldn’t find it on micro center.
This laptop is such a steal for that price
Solid review. Good to see a woman doing her thing. I feel like I don't come across enough tech reviews by women. Maybe I'm watching the wrong ones. Glad I checked it out.
It looks super cool🤤
Hi! Whats your picture on laptop screen at 10.09? It looks SICK!
Otherwise, great review as always! Seems a good laptop, battery isnt too bad either!
Awesome video, liked and sub
How do I change the graphics to 32GB on the 17inch model how do a change to dual channel ????
Buy a ddr4 sodimm 16GB single stick ram and put it in your laptop.
You're welcome!
She shows where the module is, and how to remove the base panel. I think that the 'Tech Finds' channel had a more detailed video of taking the panel off etc.
Like 👍
Важно было увидеть сравнение размеров gl504 и gl704.
Спасибо.
I think rog laptops are better than razer
SAGEPHANTOM ANIME/GAMING nah
good review.....u got a new subscriber
Hello I have a question about the 15.6 inch version. I bought an M.2 drive to install. The 512GB SSD that comes with it, is that the larger square plastic hard drive that comes in by default meaning there is an available M.2 drive slot for an upgrade? Or is the original 512GB hard drive an M.2 drive and then there's an open slot for the larger square plastic SSD? thank you very much for your help.
Thanks, lots for the review. Looking to replace my Thinkpad P71 with an
ASUS ROG G703GX-PS91K. Possible you can review this laptop?
What cable is it that I need to install a hard drive? Because I have the exact model you have and I want more storage
I have a laptop finally arriving in a couple of days time with i7 8750H but now I’m worried with the recent intel gen 9 cpu announcement. Should I make use of the 14 day return option to send it back and then rebuy with the new cpu? I’m not sure how quickly bench marks will come out.
Can't wait for the scar 3 to be release soon , more rgb = more fps and alienware look alike
The specs look decent but not a fan of the look and compact keyboard.
Are those ones that you cannot install windows on without using the power cord?
to put a single 16GB module instead of 2x8 is a healthy trend, everyone should do that so that you can upgrade without throwing away ram modules, 16GB for a lot of people now ain't enough. a thing that I can't understand is why they make 4:3 laptops with 16:9 screens, that's so stupid, why's that huge chin instead of some more screen real estate?
Can you disable optimus ? I would rather have a shorter battery life than to deal with the issues of Optimus...
Would there be a performance difference using a Seagate Firecuda 1TB SSHD in the drive Bay vs using an M.2 Data SSD using and adapter for the M.2 to Sata III adapter?
Thermal throttling and reaching close to 100c. Yeap, not much heat coming from these at all :D
did they upgrade bios for dual channel mode or not?
No Gsync at this price point? Better get the lenovo y740
it's an rtx 2070, mine sure has Gsync
No there is not G-Sync...
From Asus website and I can confirm it can do Gsync: DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K UHD output at up to 75Hz, and ensures compatibility with G-SYNC-enabled monitors.
I mean laptop's screen doesn't have G-Sync
For content creation, would you recommend this over the Macbook Pro 15? Spec to spec wise, regardless of which software I am using.
Video editing?
Average temperature of 85c is really not that impressive. I am having a MSI GS60 laptop with 970m graphic bought 5 years ago. The average temperature was about 80c when it was new. However when the cooling system got older (fatigue of cooling blade, dust or whatever reason), it can no longer maintain 80c but shoot up to over 90 or even 100c.
change your thermal paste or have someone do it
Why not do a giveaway? We would be happy to see people happy.
are these models good for rendering in Autocad, Revit, Sketch Up and Lumion?
Jardine Davies Villar yes, 3D rendering is present in most games today so yes whatever gives you more frames on a game, gives you the same effect on 3D rendering programs
Which one the easiest to upgrade, the scar 2 or the msi ge75? Coz i want to buy my first gaming laptop, Thanks.
Smackdown with Ge75, pleeeeeease!)
Review the hp Omen 15 rtx version
I like a single 16 gb ram module. I upgrade ram myself as soon as I buy.
i always hate throwing out 2x8 to uprgade to 32, so made perfect sense to me to have just one to start, it did make a noticeable improvement when I went dual channel
I just got myself the GL504GW does it matter where I save my games (I have an 256 SSD and a 1TB SSHD).
Lisa, please review the Samsung Notebook Pro 2019
Finally decent battery life on an Asus gaming laptop :)
Could you try to speak clearlier? My hearing is not bad, I've got some very nice headphones and still I have to listen very hard to understand what you are saying. For tired as I am now I hardly get what you are saying..
Introverder is this suppose to be a joke or ...?
@@TheW1nd I agree with @Introverder, Lisa does tend to speak very fast and sometimes slurs her words together. Many times i have to back up the video and listen very closely to understand what she is saying!
About half the comments are complimenting the reviewer not being 18
I approve but gaming laptops are just soo expensive.
just like thinkpads are very expensive too. some dont even have dedicated gpus even
@@danielOconahap That's just one brand thought. You could get a decent MSI gaming PC for around $1000.
Well you don't have to blow $2000 on a gaming laptop. Plus, you could think of it this way, you're getting a PC + Monitor + gaming system in a single package.
When you don't have money everything is expensive
@@trinajska Correction. Everything is expensive even if you have money. $11 for a small bag of beef jerky isn't gonna break my bank, but there's no way in heck I'm spending that much for 3 pieces of meat.
Model names are just nuts. Why don't that just call it Strix 15 2070 etc. Simple and clear.
can you make a review on Scar 3 model number : G731GW
What about for the battle between hp omen and legiony740 with rtx 2060...
waiting for gx701 review
nice review , its help i make a decision to buy used Asus ROG .
suggest Asus go for 4 M.2 slot . can throw away SATA ,unless some ppl still willing use 2TB HDD.
She sounds so much like a female Jeff Goldblum
Wish they got rid of the caddy for more battery.
Really digging the new two tone metal finish! If only it didn't have those ugly transparent WASD keys.
1499.99 from bestbuy right now with cod modern warfare download!
without offense....did this laptop work with android system ? if it's is true is it possible to play with videogame using usually window10 ? thank you
This is a Windows 10 machine.
ASUS provide an Android app to make adjustments as you game.
Linux can be installed alongside via distrowatch
it's €2499.90 in Finland + Doesn't have thunderbolt.
= price drop in the future 🤔
Can this laptop be charge using a power bank via usb type c??
Vs the Razer 2019 rtx 2070 max q
The max Q will lose
You should display the framerates during benchmarks
Can you remove the battery from the 15'' version so you can play plugged in without ruining the battery?
No just keep it in charge
i got mine when it first launchedand im mad they cameout with the strix 3 right after but its waaay more expensive i got mine from microcenter for 1699 with 2070 but my fps were way better after adding another stick of ram .. i hit 3002 in cinnebench with -120 undervolt and another stick of ram
You're not missing much with Strix 3 it's actually a downgrade in someways.
Yo Omar - I was wondering what kind of fire strike scores you're seeing after adding the ram and undervolt. I was originally getting 17000 in fire strike after adding the ram stick, but now that I've undervolted the CPU (lowered by .8v) and using afterburner to undervolt the GPU, temps are great but my scores are down to like 15500. Thanks.
Why don't they make them look better
Same goes for system cooling, all units of this series keep 90-100 degrees just like Dell g5 hollyshit! Seems like the worst rtx laptops as for me.
