Chrome stopped running near the end when Espinoza switched hands late. Stupid move, if he did it halfway down the stretch Chrome keeps running and doesn't slow up at all. Fix was probably in, Espinoza knows better.
This was 100% jockey error. Crop'ing or not. Victor let chrome run a 4 length gap on the back straight and didn't leave enough in the gas tank for the stretch. I was heartbroken being there live seeing Victor let chrome waste energy down the back. A great race, chrome could have easily won.

Aarogate won because of excessive use of the crop. Smith used the crop 14 times in that last stretch. There's rules concerning the use of the crop. Smith broke those rules. California Chrome has natural speed and talent. Aarogate does not have natural speed and needs to be cropped to make him move. Watch the race after the turn. Count how many times and how aggressively Smith uses the crop on poor Aarogate. Smith said before the race that he was going to be aggressive. He was, with excessive use of the crop. Chrome and Victor are the true winners and champions. Natural speed and talent.
He did NOT hit him 14 times. Go watch the race in HD lady. He hit him 4 times left, 4 times right. They have rules in California that you have to give the horse 3-4 strides per strike. You do the math, and Smith would have been suspended under the rules.
Capo Capo I did watch it in HD, several times. Total count I got and my daughter got was 14. The rule us 3 times, wait and see if the responds, then 3 times again. I noticed it during the race and rewatched after the race. Like I said, without the crop, Aarogate never would of caught Chrome.
Angie Price WHen you have a big long striding powerful THREE year old, who likes to look around in the stretch, he gets the whip to keep him focused. Go watch the Derby last year and Victor wailing away on American Pharoah. THAT was excessive.
He's got natural speed, but gets distracted by the crowds because he's so inexperienced, according to Mike Smith. If your definition of 'natural speed' means you can't use anything to help their focus, then take off Chrome's blinkers and see how he does, or Pharoah's ear plugs. I counted 10 strikes: 3 left, pause, 3 left, pause, 4 right.
That sound coming down the stretch is what makes horse racing special!
