São Paulo/Congonhas Airport (IATA: CGH, ICAO: SBSP) Portuguese pronunciation: [kõˈɡõɲɐs] is one of the four commercial airports serving São Paulo, Brazil. The airport is named after the neighborhood where it is located, formerly called Vila Congonhas, a property of the descendants of Lucas Antônio Monteiro de Barros (1767-1851), Viscount of Congonhas do Campo, first president of the Province of São Paulo after the independence of Brazil in 1822, during the Empire. In turn, the Viscount's domain was named after the plural of a shrub known in Brazil as Congonhas-do-campo (Luxemburgia polyandry, of the Ochnaceae family).[4] Since June 19, 2017, it is officially named after Deputy Freitas Nobre.[5] The name Congonhas however remains mostly used. It is owned by the City of São Paulo but operated by Infraero.

I lived two blocks away from Congonhas until I was 4. I don’t remember anything, but my parents told me about the TAM crash which happened when we lived there

Similar to the Medellin local airport
In July 2007, a TAM A320 overran the longer runway and crashed into a TAM office building, killing all 187 people on the plane and 13 people on the ground. The main cause was pilot error. One of the thrust reversers wasn’t working and when the plane landed, that engine was put to full power which caused the plane to veer left and off the runway.
back in the day, this part of Sao Paulo was kind of empty, so it was good to build the airport, but the city grew A LOT and then it became kind of dangerous, but still, there were just 3 accidents there as I can remember.
also, Sao Paulo has just 2 airports: Congonhas and Cumbica

Curiosity time: Congonhas was firstly planned and opened to a dead airline called Vasp and it was firstly called "Campo da Vasp" which translates to Vasp's airfield

Long ago, this airport handled widebodies like the airbus A330 on a delivery ceremony, and a defunct brazilian airline (Transbrasil) had regular flights with B767's to CGH. B757 also landed there.
This airport was made for the airline vasp in 1936 and was in the middle of no where.
The city came later, and yes congonhas is made mostly for domestic flights.

It has been a debate if the airport should expand and welcone more flights. As of right now it only flies to Philidelphia on weekdays and one flight on the weekends to Charlotte with American Eagle

767’ve operated in congonhas
There are 3 Airports surrounding São Paulo. Congonhas is in São Paulo, Guarulhos Airport is in a neighboring city, which is Guarulhos and the third one is Viracopos which is in another neighboring town, Campinas. There's another small airport for small planes, Campo de Marte. Congonhas shoundn't be closed, the airlines have massive specific special rules for the opperation there. They know about the limitations... One of the rules says that it can't have non-dosmestic flights, because of performance limitations and of course, because it's too small.

Sao paulo has 3 airports:SBMT(campo de marte-smaller airport for private aircraft) SBSP(Congonhas-receives commercial traffic, but only aircraft from the 737 family, a320 family and embraer) and SBGR(Guarulhos-bigger airport, receives aircraft like the a380 and 747)

Swiss001, IM Brasilian, this airport was made in the 50s , when São Paulo wasnt a big city, so the airport area was bigger, in the 90s the city started to expand and houses were talking the airport area, the airport once had a TAM A330 land, but the plane was empty .
When the airport was opened, was an international airport, Varig, Vasp and Sadia air (TRANSBRASIL) opperated there w DC-3 ,707 and ELECTRA
Ps: Sadia was the name until the 70s, in the 80s, they changed to TRANSBRASIL until the company went bankcorupt in the 90s
and yes,there were times when transbrasil used 767s in congonhas

São Paulo tem 1 aeroporto (Congonhas) e um Aeródromo (Marte). As outras pistas pertencem à cidades vizinhas como Guarulhos, que conta com um aeroporto internacional. São Paulo é grande mas não tem toda essa área vista de cima dos aviões, são cidades vizinhas que cresceram bem ao lado de SP, criando essa metrópole gigante.
Tem tb o Aeroporto de Viracopos em Campinas, q apesar de não estar em São Paulo tb serve a região
