I had an egr but it's not illegal to remove it where I live so long as the vehicle is atleast 21yrs old. I kept my PCV system but I am going to add a catch can for nothing more than to reduce backpressure and maybe get a bit of vacuum in the system to help the rings seal a bit better.
My 8.5 yr old diesel has an exhaust pipe that you could eat your dinner from. Not one spec of soot, so the DPF is working a treat. As for the EGR Vv, I clean it, the pipe from the intercooler and to top-end of said intercooler every 6 months. Never needed the servicing garage to clean anything in the entire time.
Newer diesel and gasoline engine pull the exhaust gas to the egr valve AFTER the DPF so there is drastically reduces the amount of sot in the exhaust getting mixed with the oil droplets. These exhaust have almost no sot in the exhaust pipe at all.

they still use high preassure egr/ from before dpf. They just combine this with a low preassure egr from after the DPF
Specify is your title this is for DPF diesels
