This reminds me a lot of card games and their archetypes. In most games, aggro beats midrange by moving faster than them, control beats aggro by preventing them from ever building an advantage, and midrange beats control by outvaluing them.
I wouldnt stop talking about it either it's a super huge achievement to win a major with a brand new team of dropped players. I don't think you guys realize how crazy hard that is when you got teams like g2 dz bds liquid ect all teams that have played together for a while have established strats and styles
I always thought of it like this. ATK Has 3 Methods 1) Direct Assault (Direct and rapid assault looking to flood a side of the defense, best against Spread Defense) 2) Hybrid (Middle Ground which gives a baseline against both extremes) 3) Constrict (Slow and paced map clear attack looking to push the defenders around, best against Condensed Defense) DEF Has 3 Methods 1) Condensed (Compact and tight defensive setup meant to minimize gaps, best against Direct Assault Attack) 2) Hybrid (Middle Ground which gives a baseline against both extremes) 3) Spread (Wide hold defense meant to eat time and force mistakes from attackers, best against Constrict Attack)
yeah this is a very interesting way to look at the game, it actually has a lot of confirmation, good study on your part i might lightly use it to switch up my gameplay when things get shaky and they counter my idea of gameplay (usually paper; which means im getting beat by scissor which tracks), i will be more rock when i need to
This makes sense. In Siege you can only be doing one of the following 3 things: moving fast (sprinting), shooting accurately (ADS), using an item/gadget. These 3 actions are mutually exclusive from one another and create a rock-paper-scissors dynamic. Move, aim, or lob. If youre aiming, you lose to a lob because you rely on LOS (they dont). If youre moving, you lose to someone aiming (you both rely on LOS, but theyre faster to shoot). If youre lobbing, you lose to someone moving (they just run around your gadget).
This also applies in Counter Strike, however individual skill can completely wreck your gameplan. However, the meta has adapted, and now there’s a constant hybrid of all three forms round by round.

i love this. the majority of esports in general is a bunch of in-game RPS. The easiest esport to see this is fighting games, and its good to see an adaptation to such a surgical fps such as siege.
I laughed to myself, thinking when you wanted to bully the enemy fragger, the Beast Coast team would have a "Its Havik!" Moment and kill or neutralize Havik.
I absolutely love this stuff. Theory is fun to get into and sometimes you find that at a certain time in the existence of a game there is a meta that just works and it's broken but meta is always changing and theory is how we get there.
I've played the game since Y3 and this is how Siege usually being played. Against a slow team that spent their time for heavy execution, play fast; against a aggressive team play mainly for picks, play slow/passive. Fett just explained it way better in this video.
Hello Fett! Your video just showed up on my feed and this is how I coach my tier 3 valorant team. Your Rock-Paper-Scissors theory also applies to Valorant, but I named it as: "Aggro-Control-Slow" And the theories and applications are so similar that I find it funny and interesting that I have to share your video to my players.
Great video. I left comment on last video just gonna say it again. It would be really cool to see an informative vid on roles and how to figure out what role suits you and play styles of the roles, but keep up the great work!
I came into esports from playing TCG, so for me this archetypes were always in mind, i just called them differently - agro, midrange and control. And a fourth type that i think is valid - combo. You can call combo really anything that can not be described be other 3 types
I will say this is close to almost any game but especially in fighting games that you'll see it. It more conditioning with a set of gameplan, if someone does something that they get punish for it, they'll change options because they think it going to be the same gameplay and try to counter it.
I haven’t played Siege in forever but I’ve been pretty adamant recently that most, or at least many, competitive games have elements of Rock-Scissors-Paper lmao. Even if it’s 5 points that counteract or the traditional 3 or has some other elements of skills as well (ie aiming, timing, execution of any sort). There’s just a simplicity in the guess and prediction work of RPS that complements competition.
I came up with this exact thing when playing with my friends cod. Far back (Rock) Letting aggressive enemies push while holding corners and putting traps. Mid play (paper) hold the middle of the map whole not Letting the enemies pushing us back while having 2 squad members pushing. Far play (scissors) full pushing 3 holding sides and the middle of spawn and 2 free roaming.
