    bought my type s last year at 78k miles and had the common problems:
    -starter grinds, happens probably once a week on startup. I haven't replaced it, but it has 103,000 miles now. I do want to replace this before winter.
    -water in trunk due to failed taillight gaskets, which after fixing the water damaged has caused the red coat in the oem taillights to flake at the bottom where that water sat. You don't notice this unless you actually stare at those bottom edges. Also leaving the car in the hot/humid garage undriven for sometimes a week or more, I had a mold problem. I could see light mold growing on the seats/door panels and this was due to the water collecting in the trunk. After drying it out, replacing gaskets, and cleaning all the interior panels/seats I've never had this issue come back. I also keep one of those bamboo charcoal air purifying bags in the trunk and it has removed all smell and chance of mold growing. I've never experienced a mold issue in any car except this one.
    -ac doesn't blow ice cold and it doesn't consistently blow cold air. On hot days you'll get cycles of cool air and warm air. Like stated, ac compressor is most likely the culprit and I'll get this checked out soon.
    Other than that, I had a right rear caliper go bad, you could tell the piston wouldn't move properly because that one wheel would be covered in brake dust after a week or two while the other 3 looked perfectly clean. That was replaced immediately when I noticed it.
    But it's just like any other pre-2006 honda. You buy the car and you'll spend very little over it's ENTIRE life on repairs(not talking about oil changes or brake pads or any other maintenance.). I can't speak for newer Honda's because they seem to have a lot more electronics and other bs, but for anything "older" you'll be good to go with these cars as long as they had a semi-competent owner maintaining it.

    I've owned an 06 RSX-S for about ten years (and 92k miles). Common issues I've had are: 3rd gear slips out occasionally, driver side window has issues coming up when wet, broken coin holder on the left side of the steering wheel, and bad tail-light gaskets resulting in a swimming pool in your trunk (where you store your spare tire). I also had a vibrating steering wheel issue around 70 mph, but that was because of a bent wheel when I hit a curb :-/

    • @Azzmelater

      Same god damn problems except my vibrating was because of a bad lower control arm bushing that screwed up my (not even 10,000 miles) toyo extenzas >:(

    • @BerryA86
      @BerryA86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you think the transmission problem is common enough and severe enough to deter someone from buying this car?

    • @Likeafoxow
      @Likeafoxow 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nah. happens about once in ten times, but once you've experienced it, you'll adapt to it and kind of just hold the shifter in place long enough for it to take hold. in the end, all that ends up happening is you clutch in for third gear a little longer than you would for any other gear as you wait for the shifter to lock in place

    A/C compressors seem to go bad on these cars a lot. Which can be expensive if you can't do the work yourself. Timing Chain Tensioner. Electronic door lock actuator. And Tail Light gaskets allowing water into the trunk area(replace the gaskets or put duct tape over the top opening)

    • @mrblend
      @mrblend 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      duct tape for the win. LOL

    • @FirstGearDrive
      @FirstGearDrive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been pretty fortunate and haven't had any problems with the A/C compressor after 15 years and 127k miles. Thankfully, I've had zero problems with the timing chain tensioner. It is time to replace the tail light gaskets as they just started leaking this rainy season. Door lock actuators are getting tired and not working 100%. Aside from the usual rattles that build up over time, the car has been super reliable and always fun to drive.

    truth be told when buying a type-s you shouldnt worry too much about the miles if you plan to mod (like the 90%) of the owners. Make sure when you buy the car that is has no accidents. If theres things needed to be fixed fine. Just make sure your car isn't giving mechanical issues at purchase. My type-s is an 06 and runs strong at 176,000 miles. I cant wait until either the motor blows so that i can drop my k24a2 in it haha

    I had one too . Loved it . Was a great car but same thing happened to me . Bought it used and took it to a dealership before I bought it ,they said it was fine ... it was definetly in a accident before and nobody told me. I found out months later when i ran into problems . ( glass coming out of air vents ) the heat wouldnt work . Eventually the transmission started slipping . I tried flushing it . New transmission fluid nothing worked but i got a few years out of it .. it sucked because the car inside was in amazing condition for leather seats being from 2002. I ended up selling it because I couldn't find a new transmission where I'm from. They are really hard to find when they go . Amazing car though ill forever miss it. Cheap on gas too .

    The comments have reminded me to check my trunk pool.
    For water in the tail lights, I took them out and drilled a small hole in the bottom nearest the centre of the car, haven't had a problem since, and you can't see them
    I made the mistake of buying a slightly modified car, and possibly slightly crashed. I don't know how the crash might have effected it, but the previous owner put a k&n typhoon intake on it and a loud muffler. It sounded cool to 22 year old me, and I was tired of looking at cars.
    Anyway I've now heard these cold air or ram intakes can throw off the computers balance, shortly after buying it the check engine light came on when I was flooring it. After a short online search I assumed a bent valve, i don't know shit, sounded expensive and it still ran fine so I ignored it for years, yes, I'm a terrible car owner. Its been running worse as time has gone on, I occasionally look up what to do, and now I see it could be something as simple as cleaning the idle air control valve. I'm gonna do that this weekend, and I've bought the stock air cleaner assembly, so please let these fix my problems!!! May need new sensors and cat after all these years of misfires

    I have an RSX, too. My clutch and starter also went bad and had to be replaced. My headlight bulbs seem to blow out every 6 months. Motor mounts disintegrated around 2015. I'm on my third catcon. Rotors seem to warp a lot, too. Radiator is still fine. SRS system had a fault, but that was fixed under warranty. Oh, belt tensioner died maybe around 2010? Actually, for a car with almost 200,000 miles on it, it's been very reliable.

    A good idea is probably to just do a massive service service at 100k, or at the very least do a thorough inspection. It's a great car if you take care of it and at least it won't drain your wallet as fast as a BMW will.

    Excellent video I don't own an RSX but i've been lucky to daily drive for the last month an RSX Type S I find the only time I enjoy it is when am driving it hard and hitting VTEC but for casual driving the car is a nightmare every little bump the car reacts with extra noises. I almost wanted to give it back to the guy that let me use it until he returns at the beginning of September. How much does it cost to get this Bushing kit installed on average. I am actually thinking about paying for it even though I don't own the car. It would make it more comfortable when am not going crazy on the accelerator.

    i own an rsx, i have bought several sets of tires, i have experienced the shaking at highway speeds.
    i don't know why, but i ALWAYS need to take it to the dealer to get it re-balanced.
    also, i am having an issue with water in the cabin, front passenger and rear floor boards, trunk.

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I would try taking it to a more experienced suspension/alignment shop. They can give you a better assessment on what might be wrong with your RSX. The issue could lie not within the tires but a suspension component since you've already balanced the car many times. water leaks are no fun... seals are bad somewhere :( Good luck!

    Hey I have a question. I saw you sold this car, but if you would have been able to keep it would you have stayed with it? I got my 06 RSX-S in Jan. 2010 with 60k miles on it and it just now hit 130k. It's starting to need a little more work here and there but nothing major it's basically everything you mentioned in this video. I never added any aftermarket parts either and it's still stock. It's a very fun car and I'm sure you and many other RSX-S drivers have really enjoyed this car. But I asked the question if you would have kept it because I don't want to sell it and then regret it later haha. I have another car and switch back and forth between the two. Budget-wise, it wouldn't really hurt to keep it but it would be nice to have some extra cash. If I do keep it though I plan to drop some money on it and actually start working on it as a "project car." That's pretty much it. It would be cool to hear an opinion from an RSX owner who sold theirs.

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Ar. Sorry for the late reply. Honestly, I miss my RSX-S a lot and at the time, I was also a little tight on money. I decided to sell it, but if I could go back in time, I would've kept it given all the effort and parts I've done to the car. It was done inside and out but for you, since it's all stock, I think selling it would be alright. The more you invest into a car, the harder it will be to let go. HOpe that helps. But you do get over it and on a good note, you can give yourself time to get another good car. I'm looking at the 08 Mugen Civic, but it's so rare. I was also really close to getting a 93 Integra GS-R which was rare. But I'm holding out until something really grabs my eyes.

    These are all incredibly common, and easy to deal with maintenance issues that come iwth buying a used car with higher mileage. Pretty much after 100K you will be replacing a lot of stuff.. Bushings, gaskets, seals, starter, alternator, belts, battery, ect.. You have to be prepared for these things. Luckily for Honda all of these things are relatively cheap and easy to replace. A Type S is one of the BEST starter cars for anyone looking to get into a manual for the first time and build their car in the future. It has a GREAT aftermarket, and it also has one of the best 4-bangers on the planet with that K20.. You can beat the shit out of these motors for 200K no problem as long as you do regular maintenance and change your fluids regularly. For me, I am so glad I went with an RSX as my first Manual. There are so many cars I could have bought that I couldnt grow with due to the car not being reliable, or being too expensive to fix. I know my friend bought an SRT4 the same time I bought my Type S and his Turbo blew in the first 6 months, and then the engine blew 5 months after that lol.. I still to this day, 8 years later, have my Type S with 215K miles and it still runs just as strong as the day I bought it.

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alexander Tsoi Hi Alexander. Yes, that sound will get worse and worse because the teeth on the starter is grinding and eventually will go out. It depends on whether you go OEM of aftermarket, but in my opinion, a starter is a vital part in your car and so I would go OEM. I bought mine off Amazon and had my mechanic install it with labor for about $400. Check my website for the exact DENSO starter that I bought. About the water in the trunk, do I don't have that. I think your trunk seals are bad. Where is it leaking from?

    • @Echizen32kMedia

      I think it depends on who did the work. Best way is to do an engine compression test and leakdown to see the condition of the engine. Also, make sure the work is warrantied because I've seen too many people buy RSXs and then have the engine blow on them a few weeks later.

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3500 is actually very cheap. I would get it inspected for leaks and make sure it was maintained properly. Bring a magnet and run it around the fender liners and side panels. If the magnet sticks or holds somewhat, then the car hasn't been in a major accident. If it just slides off, then you know the car has been in an accident. The reason why the magnet doesn't stick is because there is bondo holding the metal together and paint over it. Just something to keep in mind when negotiating.

      Oh man that's a touch one. I think they're both great cars but I personally like the look of the RSX-S better than the Civic Si. You see Civic Si(s) everywhere, but rarely see a clean RSX. I think both have their pros and cons and the Civic Si does have LSD so in terms of handling, the RSX might not have the advantage there. But I think the RSX interior is a little more refined and I love the bucket seats that come with the car. You can't go wrong with either, but if I had to pick, I'd go RSX Type S with OEM lip kit and customized HID projectors.

    Hello! I have a 2003 Rsx Type S, i have had it for over 5 years now and i love the car. However just recently i ran into a problem. I jacked up the car on one side as i was going to change the CV axle. I was unable to remove the CV axle nut without air. I then lowered the car back down after buttoning it all back up. Then i have a crank no start now. I have no clue what could have happened from this. It was jacked up on the subframe. NO way i crushed or broke a line. So now i'm stuck with fuel or spark. Odd thing is it ran an hour previous to me jacking it up. I've been all over the car the past couple days. I cannot find anything unplugged or broken. Its has spark and fuel. Please help

      Hi Chris, that sounds really weird. It could just be one major coincidence or you left one of your doors open and the battery died. Depending on the condition of your battery, you might need a new one. Have you tried jumpstarting it or using a voltmeter to test for power? I am thinking it's either your batter or your starter or possibly an ignition switch. Let me know how it goes and good luck!

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Supermandrew23 Honestly, I think the mileage isn't as important. If the owner took care of car and maintained it well, you should be good to go. Usually, if it were me, I'd look anywhere between 100k-140k range well maintained or bone stock. I don't know how much I spent, but I'd say between 1-2k on parts and labor. Some stuff I do myself and some I take it into the mechanic.

      +Echizen32k Car Talk i found a RSX for 4500 (hoping if i can negotiate), 150,000mi, manual and bone stock. I have been saving alot. However im afraid of going broke though and the life expectancy for the car. I'm a college student, cashier and soldier & Gonna have to be driving alot.
      Do you think i should be more patient or take the chance ?

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Supermandrew23 Appreciate the service buddy! Let me see if I can give you my honest opinion through my own personal experience. I totally understand your situation as I was once poor college student, and in some ways, can relate to you. First off, I think RSX are great cars and if maintained properly, will last you a long time. Now this is just general speculation, but unless the owner(s) took good care of the car and fixed little problems before they got worse, your investment on this car would seem like a good decision. I would advise to take your time and do your research: check carfax, talk to the seller and ask for maintenance records, test drive the car, and take it into a mechanic for an inspection. It might seem like a lot of HW, but you would rather pay your dues now than experience the headache later when all these problems arise and you're stuck spending money fixing everything. It can also help you negotiate price if say, the axles were bad or something like that. I can guarantee you at 150,000, there will be little things that you will have to spend on fixing: tires, brakes, change all fluids, starter, valve adjustment, and maybe spark plugs. These are just preventative maintenance, but you'll have to spend regardless so just be prepared. I think if you just kept the car OEM and not modify anything, you'll be good for a while. Problem is once we start upgrading one thing, we want to do everything else on the car the money pit becomes an endless cycle.
      Your two things to consider here are how well the car has been maintained and going broke. If after you've done your research and something in your gut tells you that it's not right, I would pass on the deal. Money is hard to come by these days and I would rather wait for the right one. But if you feel like it's the right car after going the full nine yards, then by all means, enjoy your new car.
      Good luck! It can be scary purchasing a car, but I've learned from the past and I hope my advice can help you out.

    You said the clutch is basically engaged when you start your car? Noooo, The car won't even attempt to start unless your foot is on the clutch which is disengaged.

    Would you advice I buy a 05 RSX with 207000 km, I heard about 3 gear shifting but I am getting an automatic so I should be fine right? Also I heard about leaking in the tire well, so that spooks me a little, and now I gotta think about all these four problems. should I just wait till I get a higher budget. My budget now is $5K w/o licensing, registration, winter tires etc..

    What would be the cutoff point for mileage on an RSX? Found one for 6500 but it has 173k miles on it

    • @Echizen32kMedia
      @Echizen32kMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      173k is a lot but if maintained well, you should be aogod. $6500 is high...I'd pay $3500 lol.
