- How do you design a good logo? What makes a logo great? How do you create a good logo? What are the rules and design principles behind logo design?
In this video, Sagi Haviv tells us his 3 tips for what makes a good logo:
1. Appropriate - logos should be appropriate in it's feeling.
2. Distinctive & Memorable - It has to be unusual enough to persist in our mind. It should pass the "doodle test."
3. Simple - It needs to be able to be produced in every pixel size.
When you strike the balance of these 3 things, you have a good logo.

Loving this, such clarity
1. Appropriate
2. Distinctive
3. Simple
Don't forget number
4. Ugly
He said you don't even have to like the logo at all and it doesn't have to be pretty or even look good
Thanks to him, now I know what was the missing ingredient in my logo designs
Remember the whole live stream with Sagi Haviv. It was awesome and definitely a must see!
What's the name of the vid please
It was
Please teach us how to narrow down the gap between generic and complicated.
Designer: the Logo needs to be simple minimalistic elegant .....
Client: can you add this and this and that and make this bigger and add the whole family names and add some symbols and i want 7 different fonts............
Small business clients
Drop the client.
Last week a client asked me to make one logo like that!
OMG ! That's so fucking true ! UAhuUAHUHAuhAHUHUA
I lost lot of clients because i tried to advise them to not take this path and because they don't understand good design principles
The FedEx logo. I felt so stupid when my first design teacher told me about the hidden arrow. That's just a great logo. The arrow isn't in your face and you will never notice it. Still amazes me to this day that I never noticed it 😂
I feel like the FedEx logo was made by accident. I mean letters often make shapes when you put them too close together.
And in any case a hidden symbol that the audience can't even notice, seems pointless to me. Isn't a logo primarily designed for the audience and customers?
Graphic designers always tout how graphic design is "communication", yet in this case the "communication" is not even clear at all.
Total BS !
Graphic design community always says how a logo has to be clear and functional and communicate effectively, yet they do the exact opposite and put a "hidden invisible meaning" that is not direct communication at all & nobody can ever notice it until you point it out.
These snippets from previous videos are the perfect aide-memoire for me, time's short and these bite-sized clips stop me from getting too distracted - thank you.
The whole episode with sagi haviv is, no doubt full of wisdom; This guy is awesome. Regarding my favorite logos then I have a list of them but here are few I like most ; Nike , UPS, Nvidia, Apple and Starbucks.
Thanks for reaching out to professionals for us. Thumbs up to Futur team.

They're professionals as well lol
I love the part where he says the logo should be jsut like a signature. I guess it's on full interview video, but that makes a lot of sense.
Not an illustration but a signature!
Fundamental rules. Although I naturally enjoy the challenge of a complex logo, my top three logo criterions are 1) simplicity 2) single color 3) sensitivity.
Thanks for making *THE SECRET* very straight to the point!

I do not have years of expert tuition behind me but I have always stood by my gut instinct and a keen eye for what is good and what is not so good. I always test a logo in black and white and keep it as simple as possible. if you cannot doodle it in 5 seconds its too complicated.
I agree with him for companies of that size. The bigger you get as a company, the more exposure you have and you’ll want a simpler, more recognizable logo. On the other hand, when you’re creating a logo for a smaller niche business like maybe a small law firm or a personal trainer, I think it’s totally fine to include more detail and meaning into the logo since it’s not gonna be plastered everywhere. I think the criteria that determines what makes a good logo will vary based on the size and industry of the company. Hopefully that makes sense, but would love to hear other people’s thoughts.
You're absolutely right about that.
Obviously, one will fail as a designer if he draws only a yellow rectangle on black background for a small private business.
I feel every logo sells impressively as long as it's done by a popular expert.
But once that same logo is done by an unknown guy, these experts will see a ton of faults.
@@onuohaudeagha1255I can't agree less
This is such a sweet straight to the point video that anybody can show this to the people who think logo should be a complicated one!!💐
My favorite line is, "it's so simple that's why it's so complicated!"

Short and useful! 👌
Great tips. I agree Simplicity is key. I also love a logo that works well when it's inverted, perfect example is the Nike swoosh.
I also love logos that make use of negative spaces.

I really love alot of logos designs but i would categorize my favorite ones with the experiences I've had with these companies. Since ultimately a logo is a visual identity and how they interact with audience is the most valued in my opinion. I cant help but not only choose soley in aesthetic but how they prove themselves. I would say nintendo's since I've had so many memories with the logo starting up in their consoles during childhood. Nike's beautiful swoosh has been a partner through my every training as a martial artist. Coca cola calligraphy is a personal favorite and a soft drink that has been in most social event or reunion. Finally the north face is another companion when i adventure and whenever I challenge nature.
1. Has to work big and small
2. Has to work in black/white or one color
3. Simple like Sagi says

Still no dislikes, as it should be. Thank you for getting Sagi into the show!
This excerpt is just what I needed as I am in the process of designing a logo for a client. This cool video helped me revise quickly! Thanks for the upload :)
awesome. short vid but informative
Thanks for sharing these simple to follow logo design rules. For us it is important to understand why a logo is needed and to define brand identity.
Trying to do this kinds of logos for clients and receiving only bad feedback that they want something more obvious (as shown in the the example as "before") I'm really getting discouraged and unable to expand my portfolio with works that I like.
At least this video has assured me that I'm not the one with aesthetic "problems" here.
Just keep at it.
Perfect explanation!!!! Thank you 👍👌
Thank you so much Chris! I'm so grateful!
By appropriate that shouldn't mean expressive. I got critiqued by my teacher because she told me she couldn't understand what it's about. My teacher is quite the talentless failed artist who calls herself a graphic designer. I asked my friend that works in a big design firm for an honest opinion, he told me my logo was good and that the logo doesn't stand alone but is understood in context, that's why the logo doesn't need to convey absolutely everything. I wish I had teachers like Chris and Sagi at my school. It's good I have the content from the Futur that anchors me in REAL life. A lot of teachers become teachers because they can't get work in the industry. Never swallow what your teacher says mindlessly, except for the technical jargon (shadowline, x-height, etc.). Always do a background search on them see what their work looks like and just take their comments into consideration without being too attached. Just because somebody is in a position of authority does not automatically mean they know best.
Well said!
Very informative thank you sir I love this
great video. My favourite logo is of FED EX and Carrefour(A shopping mart). I shopped there my whole life and i could not identify the negative space C in their logo. And when i saw it in a post on insta it just blew my mind
Well i just noticed the C after you told me.
I agree with this which is frustrating. I have 100 mark assignment around creating a brand. I feel like 100 marks requires complexity which is the opposite of what a logo should be.
Who edited this video? 😂😂😂 0:32
It's about graphic design not video editing 🤣
dat dude its a win for video editing as well. Its a hype thing at the time
I repeated that part more than I thought I should.
A clear genius

This really truly amazing... thanks for making the effort in getting one of the best in this field
the amount of good logos her is heart breaking
Fantastic and practical 👏👌
memorable and simple is the way to bb, great video!
Thanks for all the great content you're offering !
( I found the music too loud and distracting but awesome tips)
Dear Clients: this video is dedicated to you gentlemen
The painful part is that the clients will never see videos like these 😔
BRILLIANT MIND! Thank You for sharing.
Great video! Phew, there are so many great logos out there. One of my favourite, recently designed logos is the new Formula 1 logo, although it wasn't received very well by the fanbase (probably because of nostalgia and the iconic negative space).
Edit: Just realised you guys made a video about it :D
I feel like every brand should have 2 logos
One for marketing and one for recognizability (1 with text, 1 with only an image)
That way you have one for merch (image) and one for paperwork and name recognition (text)
Great example
McDonalds has the M as their logo (image), but also the McDonalds logo that they use for their signs (text).
But, what do you do when the market is already saturated with generic logos, due to it being, well, saturated?
Love every video!

You are right to some extent, but it is like in most industries, look at how many former footballers have been terrible coaches or managers etc. but there is probably like thousands of regular people who would have done better job, that door is shut to them obviously
I would love to hear the presentation for the NAT GEO logo. If you can sell a yellow rectangle as a logo, you can sell any logo.
I thought that worked really well, it is a graphic representation of the magazine cover (to me anyway) the one I really do not understand is the Conservation International logo. it just seems generic and technical...
Previously NatGeo used to have yellow rectangle on their magazine cover, after going into digital media they used the same rectangle as a window for viewing life
I feel every logo sells impressively as long as it's done by a popular expert.
But once that same logo is done by an unknown guy, these experts will see a ton of faults.
Love it, perfect. Thanks.
Love this man
I can't believe national geographic logo is just yellow black square and everyone knows instantly whats the brand behind it
Genius
The yellow frame was on the magazine long before they created the logo, so people already associated Nat Geo with it`s future/present logo a.k.a. the yellow rectangle
Watched his TEDx - awesome guy.
My faves are WGBH-TV, Annapurna Pictures, and of course, CorridorDigital!
Great!
It doesn't matter the logo, simple or complex, if your brand sells, your logo sells.
Exactly what I was thinking.
I feel every logo sells impressively as long as it's done by a popular expert.

thank you!
This makes a great sence. 👍
Some clients do come with their own description of the exact thing they want.
As a professional, do you think it is best/right to convince them to get something simple, distinctive, and appropriate as Sagi Haviv stated, or just go ahead and give them what they want?
I think its best that you incorporate your ideas and try to make it look like its the way they want it. Because at the end of the day it's their logo but also you need to show that you know what you're doing by making it simple, distinctive and appropriate.
Thank you@@StrokeLyf
1. Do
2.Whatever
3. You
4. Want
The professional: 3 rules.
My client/customer: that's it??? I'm paying you for that?!
Great video!
Carolyn Davison's Nike Swoosh. Simple, yet exciting!
I have problems balancing between simple and complicated, more so on the complicated side since I'm into art I always want to add lots of details since I feel like it ain't enough.
adding stuff that is unnecessary is decoration and sometimes a reflection of insecurity. I don't think it's good enough, so I'll add more.
@@TheFuturAcademy I see that is quite an eye opener, thank you for the reply.
thanks!
I want to give more like for this if more thumps :)
I love this
thanks for the sharing
0:52 that's literally the oversimplified logos meme hahahaha
Guess the Asian pink trend refers to the fashion taking place in Harajuku neighborhood in Tokyo
Great video guys. Based on that rules, how do i explain for my client that a logo should have those 3 characteristics? I'm not talking about a basic client, those kind of clients that think they know it all and just wanna do something that doesn't represent their brand at all. Could you guys make a video about showing the client that you are the well studied professional?
thanks!
The word explain when used in context of talking to clients pains me. Tell, not explain, that those 3 things are the goal of the logo. I think one of the key things he said is that it should be easy to describe. Like in short sentence.
Show your client that you are a professional with confidence.
When I started making logos, I just followed these principles without me to notice,
Now, I'm taking courses, and reading a lot about it,
It's not easy to make a great logo, and great stands for: simple, remarkable & versatile.
that live stream is still to this day one of my favorites
Sagi Haviv is "Fine"! (Goodlooking)
May I ask u to male tutorialss on How to use Adobe illustrator
Nice
Wow, look at Chris with that Supreme drip. lol.
It's not Supreme. It says Superior.
Could someone explain this logo 0:54
Netgeo logo is super simple 😊
Wow 😁
The right post-it said "compicated"
Where are you from?
So a logo can be words? I just made mine. I hope it's good.
How do you convince a client to go for a simple design?
Tell him to check the logos of the most popular companies. And show him the one you designed next to those.
In web design, getting given a huge complex client logo brings fear to my eyes...they are just impossible to use without, as said, cutting them down so far that they're no longer even relevant...less is by far more 😎
They say the true test of a good logo is this: Can it be remembered and sketched, freehand and with a fair degree of accuracy, by a young child?
Ignition logo
3 Rules of Good Logo Design
Favourite logos are: Coca Cola, Washington Redskins, EA sports, Fila, F1 (rebranded 2018)
Nike, Apple, McDonalds, Olympics. I like timeless logos.
Exactly.... And my favorite logo is Aaron Draplins "Cobra Dogs logo" design. Excellent!
That’s a good one
i've made the same argument to clients: a logo should be simple, distinctive and appropriate. you may not "like" the logo, however... that does not fly with clients. it could be that the agencies i've worked for did not have proper strong creative leadership (a don draper) and they had weak account managers ("here, ms. client, do you like it? no? that's ok...")
haviv himself looks like a golden ratio logo
Haha. He’s definitely golden.
Generic being in what terms? Can someone explain. I have been told the design is generic because it might look like something that exists but the fact is, it was a totally different approach. The generic is a bit confusing here.
Surely it depends on the conetext though, who the cleint is, what area their business is in, for example a local business like a tradesman logo shouldnt be so simplistic that its jsut a shape rihgt? because its not like building a global brand, you need people to recognise it but to the degree of company like GymShark. if its so simplistic for a local business then people wont even know what the company is.
Totally agree. Logo for small local business needs the additional criteria of conveying business type.
Great content, but the music is very bad. It's distracting.
OMG!!! The Big guy...!!!
I didn't click for the logo
What if I make a logo and such a logo already exists? It can happen.
the rules of good logo desing
gayometry meets simplified
0:52 I am feeling. This one is the best. Sorry.
Looks good when it is in normal size. Try to reduce the size and those details won't be noticed anymore.
OMG!!! I love NatGeo logo.......!!!
pahaha that editing at "pretty"
well, one can’t argue the Nike logo.
