    For girls who grew up with Star Wars in the late 90’s early 2000’s, Padmé was our Princess Leia. A lot of us looked up to her as inspiration and as a source of empowerment.
    Always thought she was an awesome character, and it wasn’t just because she was pretty. Seeing her torn up but unbothered, fighting side by side with the jedi at the climax of ep. 2, was always a highlight for me as a kid.

      Absolutely! I adored Padme growing up. She was powerful and charismatic and commanded the respect of those around her while still retaining the typically feminine characteristics of being compassionate and nurturing (and yes, having pretty dresses). I loved that she was both strong AND kind, like those things don't have to be mutually exclusive, yet they tend to be portrayed that way in most movies.

    The fact that Palpatine considered Padme to be a problem should underscore how important and influential she was. She was one of the few characters in Star Wars to do things that threw him off guard, multiple times. It happened in The Phantom Menace when she went back to Naboo to fight, and twice that I can remember in The Clone Wars. The first is in "Heroes on Both Sides" when she and Ahsoka sneak into Separatist territory to kick-start negotiations. When she informs Palpatine that she has made contact with the Separatist government and that they want to talk, we see him turn away, frowning, and ask "How was this contact established?" Then in "Pursuit of Peace," Padme delivers a passionate speech about how the war is affecting Republic citizens, and manages to sway the senate away from voting for further clone production. Afterward, we see Palpatine exasperated, and when Mas Amedda asks what he's going to do, he says "For now we must adhere to the principles of our democracy. We must let the wheels of the senate turn." Ian Abercrombie brilliantly delivers the last word through gritted teeth, demonstrating how pissed he is at being forced back into a waiting position. Palpatine viewed most people as pawns to be played, but he viewed Padme as an obstacle to get around or eliminate, someone that could actually pose a threat to his plans. AND SHE WASN'T EVEN FORCE SENSITIVE. She was just a damn good politician.

    • @KraziKazi

      I agree completely, I always love that Padme proves that anyone can make a difference, and the fact that she could be a legitimate threat to a Sith Lord brings that point home.

      @The Infamous Debatable. I don't think her relationships between both Anakin and Palpatine are underdeveloped... Or well, of course I would want to see more of my favorite characters, but I think there's enough screen time for them, with maybe a few exceptions. Even if I would think that she's an underdeveloped character, I would be lying if I said that she's not important at all.
      She's not only the wife of Anakin, but also the mother of Luke and Leia.
      She's (probably) unaware of it, but she threw Palpatine (a Sith Lord!) off guard a few times and she's also one of the reasons why Anakin turned to the dark side, and why he turned back to the light.

    It never occurred to me before, but I think part of the reason Padme takes an interest in Anakin in Episode II, aside from their bond as children, is that he is the only Jedi who is willing to help her discover who is after her. He's also the only one who listens and agrees with her ideas, never talking down to her, unlike the other Jedi, whom always talk condescendingly to her. Your reasoning for why they become attracted to each other makes sense: both are forced by their careers to adopt a public persona at odds with their sense of being. Padme always has to be the regal leader, and Anakin has to be the stoic Jedi, but both feel that this persona is at odds with who they are, This contrasts with Palpatine, who knows he's playing a role but does so with a clear sense of his own (twisted) self. Therefore, it actually makes senses they would feel a pull to each other.
    I admit the Prequels have problems. But I also think that they demand more engagement from the viewer than the Original trilogy. There is a logic to the films, but it often involves thinking carefully about the context, meaning, and symbolism presented.

    Padme has become one of my favorite characters, especially in Star Wars. Her ability to get beyond her dogmatic political beliefs in thinking, "They are the enemy! They will destroy us! They must be defeated!", and instead be willing to be humble and listen. All the rest of the galaxy was driven by fear and political propaganda from one side or the other, but Padme ALONE (even more than the wise sages of the Jedi) was able to see through all the lies, all the politics, all the propaganda, and all the fear mongering. She lived her life to warn the galaxy of these things, but the galaxy did not listen. Turning against her, she died as the Republic collapsed in on itself for the things she tried to warn them against.

    Great video. I’ve felt like Padme was the most underrated character (especially among Female Protagonists) in Star Wars/General films. One issue: you mentioned the ‘Sand’ quote without noticing the context/nuance from Padme ten seconds earlier. She says ‘I love the Water.’ While talking about her beautiful upbringing in paradise and then ends with laying on the beach made of *sand*
    Then Anakin responds with a personal experience that she and three others (soon to be just Obi Wan) would understand. His hatred of sand...which Tatooine was made out of.

      And it seems like a mischaracterization of how she would have handled things, at least with how she has been built. The situation wouldn't have even been the same.
      Still, I do believe she did have a breaking point, and she showed it in the Clone Wars show in multiple situations.
      I remember vividly the episode where Anakin creates chaos in their shared bedroom when he became jealous of an old friend of hers, and how she does fight back about it. Still, the video sums it up perfectly. She still tried to reason with him in a pacific way before turning it into a hostile situation.
      Yes, Padme might've been able to leave Anakin at some point.
      But she would still love him dearly, even if it wasn't romantic love anymore
      I do believe that if she had survived, she would've started the rebellion against him and Palps, but not with the intent of harming him.

    For all the talk about Star Wars not having strong female characters and those who act like Rey was the very first, it makes me sad for the female characters who are strong and well developed. And I'm not just talking about Padme or Leia, I'm speaking of Ashoka Tano, Mara Jade, Assaj Ventress, Cara Dune, Jyn Erso (not joking), Shaak Ti, Hera Syndulla, Jaina Solo, and even Satine Kryze, all of whom have been amazing characters in the world of Star Wars. And a good chunk of them were created during the Lucas era before Disney's takeover.
    But the greatest out of all of them is Padme. She truly fought for the people and tried to make the best of the situations she found herself in. And despite her attempts to put the people first, she did manage to find a balance by also chasing after what she wanted as well. She fell in love and married Anakin because she wanted to, while still remaining loyal to her duty for the people. And she isn't afraid to get into a real fight if needed.

    Padmé Amidala is a great character, my favorite actually, the romance with her and Anakin has it’s flaws but she’s a great character, her character throughout the movie has great bravery and kindness and it balances it very well. Padmé isn’t afraid to get into a fight either, she’s fearless as her daughter would become, as well as her son, Luke & Leia. She’s one of the best characters there is. I loved this video. You couldn’t have said it any better!

    I think a lot of the hate the prequels get is due to the fact that people don’t understand that the movies are not about Anakin. He is not the protagonist of the films. The story is really about Padme and Palpatine. Padme is the protagonist and Palpatine is the antagonist who’s victory is dependent on which one of them can get Anakin on their side. Padme was not only the true adversary to Palpatine from a political perspective but also from the perspective of her relationship with Anakin. And while Palpatine does turn Anakin to the dark side and replaces the republic with the empire, Padme is the one who ultimately wins due to her relationship with Anakin which resulted in Luke and Leia who were the perfect balance of Anakins power with Padme’s ideals and compassion.
    It really is interesting to rewatch the films in order from 1 to 6 and see it as a long battle between Padme and Palpatine.

      Wow, I'd never thought it about that way! I love this interpretation, adds so much to the story!
      The only thing is it makes the fact that so much of Padme's arc in RotS got cut from the final, leaving her with very little to do in that movie, even more disappointing!

    • @jmwilliamsart
      @jmwilliamsart ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to agree, while Palpatine may have won in the short term, in the long run Padme prevailed against him. Both Luke and Leia inherited the best of both Anakin and Padme. When Luke refuses to destroy Anakin and turn to the dar side ROTJ I can’t help but see Padme’s defiance in him. Luke was able to feel the good that was still in Anakin just like Padmé did, and because he inherited her compassion he was able to turn him back to the light. I hope that Anakin and Padme met again after he became a force ghost.

    Always loved Padme. The problem with so many writers now is that they think making a "strong female character" is essentially just making them like a man. Want to see a "strong woman"? Let's have this 100lb twig kick some bodybuilder's ass, that'll show people that girls can be strong too! It gets really silly sometimes. When this kind of writing happens, these characters completely lose their femininity and it comes across as forced and unrealistic (which it is). Padme, like Leia, is a strong, smart, and brave character but does not lose her feminine grace in the process. She sees a brick wall and doesn't find a way to run through it, but rather finds a way to go around it. Lucas was able to write these characters in a way so that they are strong and we can look up to them, but they do not lose something essential to their nature. When she breaks down at the end of ROTS, it makes that scene with Anakin much more powerful because we see her weak and broken for the first and only time in the series.

    • @nestorsifuentesaguirre2722
      @nestorsifuentesaguirre2722 ปีที่แล้ว

    Padme set an example to what Luke had to learn- trust in others, but also trust yourself. She represents the balance between professional and personal, between idealism and pragmatism, between leading armies and stopping war, when to stand up for what's right vs when to do something impulsive for your own emotional needs, between intellect and emotion.
    My headcanon is that Bail raised Leia always with Padme in mind- he and Padme shared the same values of determination, sacrifice, and justice.
    She almost destroyed Palpatine and was a constant thorn in his side, and Luke only avenges her by taking on her qualities of selflessness and trust. Sidious almost destroyed Luke the same way he destroyed her- using emotional connections to break them. However, ultimately, those connections destroyed Sidious; I think that ultimately Padme convinced Obi-Wan to tell Luke the truth about Anakin despite Obi-Wan's trauma forcing a dissociation and his insecurity making him lie to Luke (Luke confronts him, and Obi-Wan spills), and Luke unconsciously took on her ideals by showing compassion to Vader.

    • @jmwilliamsart
      @jmwilliamsart ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, even after her passing her two children Luke and Leia would go on to oppose Palpatine and avenge her. Luke inherited Anakin’s spirit, but he also inherited Padme’s heart. When Luke refused to slay Anakin and turn to the dark side (ROTJ) it was like when Padmé refused to go along with him during her times as the senator of Naboo.
      Palpatine probably saw the same spirit of defiance in Luke’s eyes that he once saw in Padme, and that really upset him. Luke was able to save Anakin from himself just as Padmé would’ve. I just can’t help but imagine Padme’s spirit calling out to Anakin just before he turned against Palpatine to save Luke.

    21:45 I don't think it's fair to say that Anakin wants to continue the war (although he certainly has a different idea on the "how" of it) - in that moment, he reacts the way he does because it sounds like Padme is trying to do the same thing the Council did, to take advantage of his friendship with Palpatine to manipulate him and thus abuse Palpatine's trust in him. The fact that it's for a cause that Anakin doesn't believe in (questioning Sheev's handling of the war and seeking peace without victory) is the icing on the cake.
    Good video, by the way, on an underrated character. I've always found it notable how Padme goes from her "this democracy no longer functions" line in Episode One - willing to change the system if it interferes with her goals - to the absolute faith she places in democracy in AOTC and ROTS, sounding downright passive when Anakin points out the system doesn't always work in their meadow picnic conversation.

    I’ve seen some people criticizing Padmé’s passivity in Episode III, but I actually think it is in character for her. She doesn’t like violence, she only fights as a last resort. Of course she wouldn’t want to take part in the war, she’d try to end it, which, by my knowledge, she tried to do in the Clone Wars.

      Padme was right about Anakin and Obi Wan was wrong, love and compassion is what Anakin needed. I think there was still a possibility that she could’ve turned Anakin back from the dark side if only Obi Wan hadn’t been here. Luke is more like Padme which is why he was able to get through to Anakin. Anakin was answering Padme as much as Luke when he said “you were right about me”, like Qui Gon, and Luke she never gave up on him.

      @@jmwilliamsart But what if Padme was trained by saiyans? Would her belief on Ani waver for real? Would she be more Kakarot than Goku?

      I agree, she understood that Anakin’s actions were driven by his emotional turmoil and Palpatine’s manipulation. She knew that Anakin still had good in him, and Luke proved that by showing him compassion just like her.

    Maan, I did not give padme enough credit when I was a kid. I was more interested in the cool Jedi and the lightsabers and the fighting 😂. She’s so underrated.

    Where can we get warrior Queens like this? Fight with blasters then din a gorgeous dress with in 3 hours time. Anakin stood no chance😂 Seeing her so badass going from diplomat to warrior to queen god I’d fall in love too ❤🎉 💫
    Padmé was a chosen One 🎉

      What could have been if Anakin died insetad of Padme tho?? I ask this because in WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness the Scarlet Witch's many losses caused her to become very toxic and psychotic gf and mother. In a grizzly what if I hope Lucasfilm creates a scenario where Padme sacrifices so many lives because she could not let go of Ani like Vision could not let go of the Zombie Witch

    Have any of you ever wondered why Padme trusts and never questioned anakin about the temple attack even when he told her that the jedi were evil? It's because of her mistake in trusting a man named Rush Clovis more than twice. Despite trusting him twice, Clovis betrayed her on both accounts and anakin new that it was a bad idea to ever trust or much less sympathize with him. For not listening to Anakin, she got many people killed, almost lost her husband and nearly got her killed despite it being for good intentions. After Clovis's death, Padme would never doubt Anakin again until it took Obiwan gave her evidence about what really happened.

      The Trade Federation caused this relationship doomed to fail but THE last straw was both Clovis and the Order refusing to listen to Ahsoka as well as making up what they actually did apparently

      Serious question: what do you think about people who think her fate in ROTS was rightfully deserved after the Clovis events (Clone Wars)??? Not making you agree or disagree on those opinions. Just wanting to try and conclude that Anakin ain't the sole guy who deserved therapy. Maybe Padme should have sought therapy too and imagine what could have been if QuiGon lived and bore witness of Anakin almost being the same animal as the Tusken when attacking Clovis
