Good Lord. You do realize he is an acclaimed arco player? Great jazz cat? He is one of the last bass legends alive today. Enough of the bullshit "jazz cat" business and read up on Reid's history. Those scratchy sounds he achieves are his trademark. He's not making mistakes, if that's what you were thinking. I hope you don't play on a professional level if you can't even discern that.
We've abandoned the arts. We've abandoned blues and the effort necessary to "imitate, assimilate and then innovate." Not everyone of us, but more than I'm comfortable estimating. Still, I have hope...
I attended a discussion among quality people....new orleans jazz musicians, professors, philosophers etc in Atlanta it was all about rapmusic and how important it is in music development and general and as a blackman, and as rhytm does old guys really paid respect to rap instead of to belittle it

Thank you for sharing! Thank you Rufus for your beautiful tones, intonation, and education.
Rufus gets such a great sound which is instantly recognizable. And swings like mad and never overplays.

Brass/ reeds = foreigner!
Not a single black student in the crowd. Where are African Americans in jazz education?
