There's a mathematical proof that almost everybody is less popular than their average friend. It is because your most popular few friends tend to be WAY more pppular than your other friends, so they bring up the average to more popular than you. And if you are relatively popular, it likely means that you have enough friends that some of them are STILL way more popular than most of the others and are bringing that average up. Hence, for just about everyone, you are less popular than your friends. A bit depressing at first, but when you think about it, it makes sense. There are related theorems too. You're less famous than your average friend, you have less money than your average friend, etc.

In all seriousness, I experienced this even before the word "internet" existed, in 1985. I lived across the street from Mister Rogers in Pittsburgh, and saw him on the street several times. He walked to work at his studio in WQED. My friends who had also seen him all talked about this, wondering what we should do. We finally agreed to simply say, "Hello, Mister Rogers!" and walk on. I did this several times. The first time was .. well, frightening. He said, "Hello!" back and that was that. The second and third times were a blur. But he was a genuinely nice guy, and I do think he recognized me at some point. After many times, his "Hello!" seemed more friendly, more forward. I contemplated saying more, but never did. But I felt that he knew me, that we were somehow friends. Obviously, this was a projection from feelings I had from early childhood, when he spoke to my fears and thought very directly. There was always a sense that Mister Rogers, of all people, understood all. Looking back on these extremely casual encounters I cry a little. I feel like I was in the presence of a saint of some kind. Well, he was, but that's largely a different story. I believe Mister Rogers came to recognize me, and in some small way he probably did. And it still feels absolutely amazing. It makes me want to be more like him, to follow his example. All we ever said was, "Hello!"
When I was younger I used to think that whenever I blinked or closed my eyes, everyone around me started throwing a party and when I opened them they quickly put everything back into place because they wanted to leave me out 😅
This is an important truth to internalize, but also a little depressing - we all have these people we feel close to, and it is a little sad to remind ourselves that they don't know we exist, but it's important to keep this imaginary relationship in check. The problem here is that we are becoming a society that watches and records everything. If there are cameras, you are being watched. If you are in a major store, you are being watched. Recently, an Airbnb host was caught putting cameras on the inside of their house to record those renting from them. The host's response was basically: what were you doing that you didn't want to be recorded? I don't think I'm being watched all the time, but I do know that if there are cameras, which are getting smaller and more concealed, then I am being recorded. It might end up getting deleted and never seen; however, if I'm at a Target, then I'm in one of many screens being actively watched for odd behavior.
It's true though and to some extent, that reasoning is the exact intended purpose of post-9/11 surveillance states. The idea that you COULD be watched at any time, anywhere in public, is a very effective way of making sure people don't behave in 'socially undesirable ways'. Even if you aren't being recorded, let alone watched, you don't know if you are or not, and thus will act in socially desirable ways _anywhere_ in public.
Would it have worked? Pretty sure all our teachers kept preaching a gentler Tyler Durden philosophy that we are not special or unique snowflakes and we still had that sort of "you can never understand" attitude...

I am 21 years old and I still have a lot of parasocial relationships with fictional characters. They actually stem from a rather unusual coping mechanism called "maladaptive daydreaming". Back then it was a coping technique for my depression. I am healthy now, but I still do it, just not as often and intense. But when I am stressed over a long period, it gets more intense. Someone else here who has experience with this?
I thought I had found a new formula of gravity, based on the formula I had just learned of electrostatic force. Suffer No Fools Fallout as a game series is fine. The combat isn’t amazing and neither is a lot of the writing (at least Bethesda’s writing) but other than that the games are fun time-wasters with a myriad of emotional experiences involved. Fallout 76, however... I personally haven’t played Fallout 76 but the reception was awful and a lot of the design is poor from what I’ve heard. Have your own opinions and ideas, sir, and I’ll have mine. And I’m not accusing you of doing this, of course, but make sure when you judge a franchise or its fan base that you account for the fact that whatever unsavory aspects are usually only a fragment of the whole.

The feeling that your stalked can sometimes be a result of abuse. I'd know, I've been in an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship, and the moment I thought about getting out I started having these paranoic thoughts that this person knows I don't like them anymore. That my friends ratted me out, or that he joined a chat I'm in on an alt account and read all my venting, or that they saw me through a window when I was near their house and think I'm avoiding them, or even that they just can tell from the tiniest involuntary cues what I'm thinking. And all these thoughts were paralyzing and sometimes prevented me from seeking out help. Delusions of stalking are absolutely horrible.
Oh wow, I hadn't made that link but it makes total sense. I grew up in an abusive home and when I moved out, I still for a long time thought I was being watched as carefully as I really was at home. I have the opposite of Truman Syndrome. I assume no one gives a shit about my existence and that my most personally significant thoughts and feelings don't matter. Which is largely true, but I take it probably further than I should, presuming no stranger could ever really genuinely be interested in getting to know me, and that no one with any large following, like Knowing Better, really cares about whether or not I, or anyone else, actually exist or contribute, and are just being polite to keep up their career by pretending to have interest in fans and followers. What's that called?
Let me ask a different question, do you care about the most personal thoughts of those you know and care that they exist? When meeting new people, do you feel interested in getting to know them better?
I don’t know what it’s called but I have felt that way profoundly at times in my life, mostly when I was younger and still in school. I felt that if died in bed, no one would know until the smell became noticeable or when my post dated rent cheques began to bounce. I chalked it up to clinical depression.
@@ryanalving3785 I think its best to not try to diagnose anything more complicated than Depression (and even depression it self, which is why I didn't ascertain it was depression) through just comments. It's possible these could be symptoms of a personality disorder or other mental illness, yes, but it's generally best to be diagnosed by a professional. It could still be helpful to understand the various personality disorders as well as other psychological disorders and mental illness in general before seeking help, so I'm not chastising you, and it wouldn't be harmful for the OP to ask him self that, I say it more for clarity's sake.

I’ve experienced both sides of this, I think in middle school I felt more like everyone was watching me, and in high school I felt more like a side character in other more interesting peoples lives. I preferred being a side character, it gave me more room to fuck up and not feel anything about it.
I fell like i am backgorund character, not interestig one that appears jn like one episode and is immidietly tossed back to the background in the next.
There is a personal development technique that uses this idea as a tool for self improvement. Imagine that the universe does observe your thoughts, decisions and actions, even when you are alone. And imagine that other people learn from you and imitate you. If that were the case, how do you think the world would turn out and would you be inspired to change yourself? I’m not saying this is how the universe works but it’s an effective motivational tool especially if you are susceptible to this kind of irrational thinking.

When I was in early elementary school, I couldn't stop wondering if reality was just a video game or machine I was plugged into. How could you ever prove that other people's minds and thoughts were real, the only thing you can know for sure is the thoughts in your own head? But maybe you can't trust those either? If it was true, was my progress being tracked by other higher beings? I knew it wasn't true, but the idea that I couldn't disprove it tripped my mind up. Then I got older and realized I'm special just like everyone else, a bag of meat on a speck of dust in an endless void. I'm 30 and I'm just too lazy now.
What’s really difficult is living with a sense of superiority. You *know* deep down that you’re not some blessing to the world, but you can’t help but feel like you are in certain cases. It makes you second guess what you actually are doing better than someone too.
i had a parasocial relationship for years with someone who is now a close friend! they were an artist i looked up to, and we started actually interacting in 2014, a few years after i'd been following them. i was 17 at the time and surprisingly i managed the transition pretty well, i had to work hard to remember that they're a normal person and not to put them on a pedestal. i had burning questions about past events in their life that i had to hold back. it took a while but eventually i became normal about the whole thing. they're a great friend!

My youngest son had a little girl named Mary in a old-timey dress that played with him. He said she followed us home from the old family graveyard that's on our land, out in the woods. We have no relation to them, they were just the family that owned all the land around here, they were farmers. I have no idea what or who Mary is, but I didn't make a "big deal" about her😬🤷♀️😳. So Mary hung out with me and my son sometimes when we were outside doing outdoorsy stuff. (He was around 3 at the time). He said she got sad when we had to go back inside sometimes. I asked him why, he said she isn't allowed to follow us past the "line" . He pointed to our old property line that ran along our "yard" and was once the gates and drive up to the big ole farmhouse. I'm just going with it. I'm kinda spooked by it, but I'm like....Sure, whatevs lil dude🤷♀️😜. Once I put him down for his afternoon nap when I went in to wake him up a few hours later, he said "Guess what, Mommy! So.... I told Mary she could come in and take a nap with me and SHE DID! She didn't want you to know, she thought you'd tell her to leave and go back to the boring graveyard again, and she doesn't like it out there by herself. But I said "No, it's ok! My Mommy is really nice and she won't be mad, I promise!" So, I just picked him up and said, "Well.... I'm glad she listened to you then! So, where'd Mary take her nap?" He pointed to the pillow beside his pillow, and said "She slept right there, see??" I looked at the pillow where the little girl "Mary" had slept, according to my 3-year old son, who's 15 now BTW, and there was a perfect little head indentation on it. I'm not even sure what it was that made that head shaped indentation on that pillow, but it was nothing like my son's own pillow. His was messed up and flat, like it always was. Sooo.... Listen, I'm not like a ghost believer/disbeliever or anything. I'm still undecided on that subject, kinda.. I have not personally seen ANYTHING (in my lifetime) yet that seemed like a ghost or a spirit or a little girl or (PLEASE NOO, I HOPE I NEVAHH SEE) some creepy CLOWN-DEMON WITH EVIL EYES or whatever you want to call it😵😱🤡👻! I DO feel like there are certain places or areas or houses that are not ......at peace(?),un- settled(?) I grew up on this property and I have gone down to the old cemetery out in the woods hundreds of times in my lifetime. Both daytime and nighttime. I'm never scared or creeped out by the place, we all love walking through those woods and down to the graveyard!. It's extremely cool, actually. It dates back to the late 1800's, there's prolly only 10 or so graves(?) It was that family's place of burial, on their huge, huge family farm. It's not uncommon... many families did that back then, out here in the country, in Carolina. 🤠😉. I have had some places give me a really creepy vibe, or just feel "weird"? I don't know how to describe that "feeling"but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has felt some bad vibes before? Or thought someone was watching me, only to turn around and nothing be there? Or caught a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye, but when I turn to look at it, there's nothing there? Maybe this episode is confirmation that we ALL feel like the world is all about ourselves. Anyways, I'm not trying to make anybody get "weirded out" or anything. I'm just relaying the "friend" my little boy used to play with and talk to and see and describe in detail to me. Him and Mary would play off and on for maybe another few years. Then one day I realized, my son hadn't mentioned his "friend Mary from the graveyard" in a pretty long while, a year, maybe two? I asked him about her. So whatever happened to Mary? She still come play with you? He said she is always around somewhere, but no, she doesn't feel lonely and all alone by herself anymore, so she just waves to him from wherever she's hanging out. 🤗😎 I have always believed that I cannot tell you or anyone else what is "real" or not real. Ok, the Google listening to give you targeted ads is 100% real. The main difference between humans and AI, is that AI can listen to everyone at once without losing focus. AI is not self centered. Its goal is to listen to you. Google's goal is to make as much revenue as possible. So while I might tune you out or not think anything of our conversations, every conversation is important to google. There's a strong incentive. If you don't believe it, I challenge you to try it yourself. Think of a product you would never use or think of buying, and in all likelyhood have never seen an ad for on Google. Write it down. Open up five different web pages using google ads. Mark down what the ads were about. Turn on your mic. Say outloud several sentences pertaining to that product. Maybe even made it specific; "Oh boy, I could really use a _(adjective)_ _(product)__ right now! Wouldn't it be nice to have a new _____? I think my mother could use a _____ now too." Refresh those pages. Take note of your targeted ads. I'm not saying this psychological effect *couldn't* be used to explain targeted ads, according to what is said in the mic. But the hypothesis that google is listening and giving you targeted ads based solely on what it hears, is *easily* testable.
dande 313 actually it’s more like a guess by the bot. Which makes us wonder how predictable behaviors are? How many variables exist, and how few do we use? To where a robot who observes our internet behavior can begin guessing our interests and real life activities?
I know about the effect he mentioned, and yeah, it more applies to watching a movie or reading a book and suddenly seeing more references to it. Two situations where it doesn't apply is going to a community/subculture and seeing more of one term because the use is actually increased (for example you're more likely to see "pedantic" and "objectively" on reddit than elsewhere online and you're more likely to notice the lack of the words on other sites), and in the situation you described. The AI isn't targeting you specifically, but it is listening for words that are spoken or typed. While it's delusional to think the government is watching you specifically - well, unless you suddenly end up on the No Fly list - it's rational to think something like the NSA is scanning for keywords, especially on public posts because even websites themselves flag content with certain words.
I've done that and I'm like 80% sure it's real. I have an ancient phone (Xperia J) that can barely run Whatsapp and I've rarely if ever seen ads for things I just mentioned. On the other hand, my boyfriend has a much newer phone and I've seen it happening with his phone a few times a week.
@Richard Durkee I can't do a proper study, though. I'd need a few "virgin" new phones but as I said, my only phone is like 10 years old. However, it's undeniable that the technology to listen to you exists (current phones have trigger words that open up Google's services), and the motivation is real too (Facebook has done everything within its reach to gather information, often venturing outside of the law), so the question is, why would they NOT do it?
@Richard Durkee I'm a computer engineer, I know this stuff. You don't need to store recordings any more than Alexa does. A system can simply have a list of trigger words like cost, price, buy, cheap, etc., then silently capture whatever you say next, convert it to text and use that info the same way it uses your search history. Now, targetted ads are very useful, but they're limited to the things you take the effort to look up. Some people (myself included) avoid or simply don't have any reason to search for toothpaste brands, trips to this obscure country that you like, or that cartoon you stopped watching 10 years ago. Casual conversations are a potential goldmine for companies. BTW, Facebook has been in a shit ton of legal troubles lately. Last year they were found to have tried to collect your SMS and call data without your permission in an attempt to improve its "People you may know" feature. I can only imagine the potential security threats. Also, Cambridge Analytica. Need I say more?

I read Paper Towns in the span of two days. Such a gripping and well paced novel that covers such prescient themes of family, identity, friendship and as you mentioned evolving out of our own social bubbles. The movie is very good too!
As a kid I had similar experience with parasocial relationships with my mom telling her coworkers all about me then I’d met her coworkers and was surprised that they knew. Who I was one of her coworkers I never met decided that I should be lawyer he was wrong

Issue is while TH-camrs have audiences, the audience members may have noone beyond those parasocial relationships. And accessing a psychologist or therapist is not always an affordable option. Sadly there are alot of socially isolated ppl out there and there don't seem to be very many options for them/us.

To be honest, I normally come to your channel to help me sleep better. I do watch the video the first three times for all that knowledge, but usually I play your videos on loop to help me fall asleep faster. I’m not saying your videos are boring, it’s just that you have a way of taking that low key sounds like asmr without making it really weird and awkward, so I guess I am here just because of you😉

7:25 back in October 2018, I got to experience my first FFA national convention for a day. In my school, people competing get to stay for the whole week, but we are close enough to convention that everyone gets to go for a day. The whole thing was in official dress. Dress shoes/heals (or flats), black slacks/skirts, black socks, white button up shirt/ blouse, FFA tie/scarf, and the famous blue jacket with your name, state, state, chapter, pins, and FFA emblem on it. On the way back we stopped at a McDonalds. They had my name on my receipt without me telling them, and I was confused until I remembered my name was on my jacket.
Just throwing it out there, but I've had friends come over, tell me about a thing, and not 30 seconds later I'm getting CONSTANT ads about it, and I pay enough attention to ads to know if I've seen one or not before. There are some "coincidences" that just do not line up, unless your devices are listening to their surroundings for keywords, and that's just the sorry state of things, whether a company says they do something is no indication of what their actually doing, especially if there's more money to be made doing it (the illegal thing) than they'll lose getting caught.
You answered it yourself. Your friend probably looked at shit. The bot knows you’re friends and can see what things you’ve shared interest in. And can actively start recommending it to you as well. These bots are guessing. Guessing with extreme accuracy sometimes. But still “guessing”.
I completely agree. I pay attention to the ads and notice when they change. Theres no way it’s just a consequence I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said something and an ad for it pops up. Is this guy also gonna claim that our google searches aren’t being tracked?
This is a great video and the first half should be mandatory viewing for high school students. Would've saved me a lot of stress and anxiety. On the note of Google and Facebook listening to you, as a software engineer I have to clarify... they actually ARE and they AREN'T at the same time. They AREN'T listening in the sense that there's not someone with one cup of a headset up to their ear scribbling notes furiously on everything you say. But they ARE in that they implant trackers on your browser (even if you never visit one of their sites) and use it to send data back to their servers about what you do to build a profile on you so they know who you are, what your life situation is like, what you like, what you don't like, etc. all so they can decide what to sell you. Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa also constantly record sound in a rotating buffer and stream it back to their servers for evaluation by their central language parsing algorithm. They claim that audio is not stored but Amazon would not submit to a police request to turn over the stored data on an Amazon Echo owner whose echo microphone may have picked up audio of his murder. It's likely they just store semi-anonymized transcripts of all the audio their devices pick up and fold that into the aforementioned profiles. That is one explanation for how you can be talking about wanting to get a new car and then suddenly get new car ads. But the more likely explanation is that you visited a car website recently or did a google search for something car related or else the profile picked up on you google maps-ing directions to a car repair shop. A lot of that surveillance also takes place through tracking done via apps that leave location permissions and microphone permissions active even if the app is "off." Anyway, overall a great video and like I said... these profiles AREN'T targeted surveillance like the delusion would insist. It is a broad surveillance performed on everyone everywhere all the time. It is a huge violation of our rights to privacy but because our governments like having this data available to target voters and get info on citizens quickly who are suspected of deviance they are not keen to do something to change it. Also since most people don't know, don't care, or don't understand why they SHOULD care there's no political will to do anything about it.
Sadly I've come to realize over the years that every friend I thought I had outside of immediate family was a parasocial relationship with someone who didn't give a damn about me. Trying to stay in touch with people is a fools errand. I do most my "socializing" now with strangers on the internet.

In all seriousness, I experienced this even before the word "internet" existed, in 1985. I lived across the street from Mister Rogers in Pittsburgh, and saw him on the street several times. He walked to work at his studio in WQED. My friends who had also seen him all talked about this, wondering what we should do. We finally agreed to simply say, "Hello, Mister Rogers!" and walk on.
I did this several times. The first time was .. well, frightening. He said, "Hello!" back and that was that.
The second and third times were a blur. But he was a genuinely nice guy, and I do think he recognized me at some point. After many times, his "Hello!" seemed more friendly, more forward. I contemplated saying more, but never did. But I felt that he knew me, that we were somehow friends.
Obviously, this was a projection from feelings I had from early childhood, when he spoke to my fears and thought very directly. There was always a sense that Mister Rogers, of all people, understood all.
Looking back on these extremely casual encounters I cry a little. I feel like I was in the presence of a saint of some kind. Well, he was, but that's largely a different story. I believe Mister Rogers came to recognize me, and in some small way he probably did. And it still feels absolutely amazing. It makes me want to be more like him, to follow his example.

If there are cameras, you are being watched. If you are in a major store, you are being watched.
Recently, an Airbnb host was caught putting cameras on the inside of their house to record those renting from them. The host's response was basically: what were you doing that you didn't want to be recorded?
I don't think I'm being watched all the time, but I do know that if there are cameras, which are getting smaller and more concealed, then I am being recorded. It might end up getting deleted and never seen; however, if I'm at a Target, then I'm in one of many screens being actively watched for odd behavior.
It's true though and to some extent, that reasoning is the exact intended purpose of post-9/11 surveillance states. The idea that you COULD be watched at any time, anywhere in public, is a very effective way of making sure people don't behave in 'socially undesirable ways'. Even if you aren't being recorded, let alone watched, you don't know if you are or not, and thus will act in socially desirable ways _anywhere_ in public.
The question isn’t “am I being watched”, it is “are people paying atanchin to me”.

I am 21 years old and I still have a lot of parasocial relationships with fictional characters. They actually stem from a rather unusual coping mechanism called "maladaptive daydreaming". Back then it was a coping technique for my depression. I am healthy now, but I still do it, just not as often and intense. But when I am stressed over a long period, it gets more intense.

Suffer No Fools Fallout as a game series is fine. The combat isn’t amazing and neither is a lot of the writing (at least Bethesda’s writing) but other than that the games are fun time-wasters with a myriad of emotional experiences involved. Fallout 76, however... I personally haven’t played Fallout 76 but the reception was awful and a lot of the design is poor from what I’ve heard. Have your own opinions and ideas, sir, and I’ll have mine. And I’m not accusing you of doing this, of course, but make sure when you judge a franchise or its fan base that you account for the fact that whatever unsavory aspects are usually only a fragment of the whole.

The feeling that your stalked can sometimes be a result of abuse. I'd know, I've been in an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship, and the moment I thought about getting out I started having these paranoic thoughts that this person knows I don't like them anymore. That my friends ratted me out, or that he joined a chat I'm in on an alt account and read all my venting, or that they saw me through a window when I was near their house and think I'm avoiding them, or even that they just can tell from the tiniest involuntary cues what I'm thinking. And all these thoughts were paralyzing and sometimes prevented me from seeking out help. Delusions of stalking are absolutely horrible.

I have the opposite of Truman Syndrome. I assume no one gives a shit about my existence and that my most personally significant thoughts and feelings don't matter.
Which is largely true, but I take it probably further than I should, presuming no stranger could ever really genuinely be interested in getting to know me, and that no one with any large following, like Knowing Better, really cares about whether or not I, or anyone else, actually exist or contribute, and are just being polite to keep up their career by pretending to have interest in fans and followers.

I don’t know what it’s called but I have felt that way profoundly at times in my life, mostly when I was younger and still in school. I felt that if died in bed, no one would know until the smell became noticeable or when my post dated rent cheques began to bounce. I chalked it up to clinical depression.
@@ryanalving3785 I think its best to not try to diagnose anything more complicated than Depression (and even depression it self, which is why I didn't ascertain it was depression) through just comments. It's possible these could be symptoms of a personality disorder or other mental illness, yes, but it's generally best to be diagnosed by a professional.
It could still be helpful to understand the various personality disorders as well as other psychological disorders and mental illness in general before seeking help, so I'm not chastising you, and it wouldn't be harmful for the OP to ask him self that, I say it more for clarity's sake.

Well, that wasn't meant to be a diagnosis as much as just a question. I kind of sympathize with the OP, as I have at times dealt with those thoughts or similar ones. I am just curious whether the issue is of misunderstanding of self or of others.
I’ve experienced both sides of this, I think in middle school I felt more like everyone was watching me, and in high school I felt more like a side character in other more interesting peoples lives. I preferred being a side character, it gave me more room to fuck up and not feel anything about it.

i had a parasocial relationship for years with someone who is now a close friend! they were an artist i looked up to, and we started actually interacting in 2014, a few years after i'd been following them. i was 17 at the time and surprisingly i managed the transition pretty well, i had to work hard to remember that they're a normal person and not to put them on a pedestal. i had burning questions about past events in their life that i had to hold back. it took a while but eventually i became normal about the whole thing. they're a great friend!

My youngest son had a little girl named Mary in a old-timey dress that played with him. He said she followed us home from the old family graveyard that's on our land, out in the woods. We have no relation to them, they were just the family that owned all the land around here, they were farmers. I have no idea what or who Mary is, but I didn't make a "big deal" about her😬🤷♀️😳. So Mary hung out with me and my son sometimes when we were outside doing outdoorsy stuff. (He was around 3 at the time). He said she got sad when we had to go back inside sometimes. I asked him why, he said she isn't allowed to follow us past the "line" . He pointed to our old property line that ran along our "yard" and was once the gates and drive up to the big ole farmhouse. I'm just going with it. I'm kinda spooked by it, but I'm like....Sure, whatevs lil dude🤷♀️😜. Once I put him down for his afternoon nap when I went in to wake him up a few hours later, he said "Guess what, Mommy! So.... I told Mary she could come in and take a nap with me and SHE DID! She didn't want you to know, she thought you'd tell her to leave and go back to the boring graveyard again, and she doesn't like it out there by herself. But I said "No, it's ok! My Mommy is really nice and she won't be mad, I promise!" So, I just picked him up and said, "Well.... I'm glad she listened to you then! So, where'd Mary take her nap?" He pointed to the pillow beside his pillow, and said "She slept right there, see??" I looked at the pillow where the little girl "Mary" had slept, according to my 3-year old son, who's 15 now BTW, and there was a perfect little head indentation on it. I'm not even sure what it was that made that head shaped indentation on that pillow, but it was nothing like my son's own pillow. His was messed up and flat, like it always was. Sooo.... Listen, I'm not like a ghost believer/disbeliever or anything. I'm still undecided on that subject, kinda.. I have not personally seen ANYTHING (in my lifetime) yet that seemed like a ghost or a spirit or a little girl or (PLEASE NOO, I HOPE I NEVAHH SEE) some creepy CLOWN-DEMON WITH EVIL EYES or whatever you want to call it😵😱🤡👻! I DO feel like there are certain places or areas or houses that are not ......at peace(?),un- settled(?) Ok, the Google listening to give you targeted ads is 100% real. The main difference between humans and AI, is that AI can listen to everyone at once without losing focus. AI is not self centered. Its goal is to listen to you. Google's goal is to make as much revenue as possible. So while I might tune you out or not think anything of our conversations, every conversation is important to google. There's a strong incentive.
If you don't believe it, I challenge you to try it yourself. Think of a product you would never use or think of buying, and in all likelyhood have never seen an ad for on Google. Write it down. Open up five different web pages using google ads. Mark down what the ads were about. Turn on your mic. Say outloud several sentences pertaining to that product. Maybe even made it specific; "Oh boy, I could really use a _(adjective)_ _(product)__ right now! Wouldn't it be nice to have a new _____? I think my mother could use a _____ now too." Refresh those pages. Take note of your targeted ads.
I'm not saying this psychological effect *couldn't* be used to explain targeted ads, according to what is said in the mic. But the hypothesis that google is listening and giving you targeted ads based solely on what it hears, is *easily* testable.
dande 313 actually it’s more like a guess by the bot. Which makes us wonder how predictable behaviors are? How many variables exist, and how few do we use? To where a robot who observes our internet behavior can begin guessing our interests and real life activities?
I know about the effect he mentioned, and yeah, it more applies to watching a movie or reading a book and suddenly seeing more references to it. Two situations where it doesn't apply is going to a community/subculture and seeing more of one term because the use is actually increased (for example you're more likely to see "pedantic" and "objectively" on reddit than elsewhere online and you're more likely to notice the lack of the words on other sites), and in the situation you described. The AI isn't targeting you specifically, but it is listening for words that are spoken or typed. While it's delusional to think the government is watching you specifically - well, unless you suddenly end up on the No Fly list - it's rational to think something like the NSA is scanning for keywords, especially on public posts because even websites themselves flag content with certain words.
I've done that and I'm like 80% sure it's real. I have an ancient phone (Xperia J) that can barely run Whatsapp and I've rarely if ever seen ads for things I just mentioned. On the other hand, my boyfriend has a much newer phone and I've seen it happening with his phone a few times a week.
@Richard Durkee I can't do a proper study, though. I'd need a few "virgin" new phones but as I said, my only phone is like 10 years old. However, it's undeniable that the technology to listen to you exists (current phones have trigger words that open up Google's services), and the motivation is real too (Facebook has done everything within its reach to gather information, often venturing outside of the law), so the question is, why would they NOT do it?
@Richard Durkee I'm a computer engineer, I know this stuff. You don't need to store recordings any more than Alexa does. A system can simply have a list of trigger words like cost, price, buy, cheap, etc., then silently capture whatever you say next, convert it to text and use that info the same way it uses your search history.
Now, targetted ads are very useful, but they're limited to the things you take the effort to look up. Some people (myself included) avoid or simply don't have any reason to search for toothpaste brands, trips to this obscure country that you like, or that cartoon you stopped watching 10 years ago. Casual conversations are a potential goldmine for companies.
BTW, Facebook has been in a shit ton of legal troubles lately. Last year they were found to have tried to collect your SMS and call data without your permission in an attempt to improve its "People you may know" feature. I can only imagine the potential security threats. Also, Cambridge Analytica. Need I say more?

Issue is while TH-camrs have audiences, the audience members may have noone beyond those parasocial relationships. And accessing a psychologist or therapist is not always an affordable option. Sadly there are alot of socially isolated ppl out there and there don't seem to be very many options for them/us.

7:25 back in October 2018, I got to experience my first FFA national convention for a day. In my school, people competing get to stay for the whole week, but we are close enough to convention that everyone gets to go for a day. The whole thing was in official dress. Dress shoes/heals (or flats), black slacks/skirts, black socks, white button up shirt/ blouse, FFA tie/scarf, and the famous blue jacket with your name, state, state, chapter, pins, and FFA emblem on it. On the way back we stopped at a McDonalds. They had my name on my receipt without me telling them, and I was confused until I remembered my name was on my jacket.
Just throwing it out there, but I've had friends come over, tell me about a thing, and not 30 seconds later I'm getting CONSTANT ads about it, and I pay enough attention to ads to know if I've seen one or not before. There are some "coincidences" that just do not line up, unless your devices are listening to their surroundings for keywords, and that's just the sorry state of things, whether a company says they do something is no indication of what their actually doing, especially if there's more money to be made doing it (the illegal thing) than they'll lose getting caught.
You answered it yourself. Your friend probably looked at shit. The bot knows you’re friends and can see what things you’ve shared interest in. And can actively start recommending it to you as well.
These bots are guessing. Guessing with extreme accuracy sometimes. But still “guessing”.
I completely agree. I pay attention to the ads and notice when they change. Theres no way it’s just a consequence I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said something and an ad for it pops up. Is this guy also gonna claim that our google searches aren’t being tracked?

This is a great video and the first half should be mandatory viewing for high school students. Would've saved me a lot of stress and anxiety.
On the note of Google and Facebook listening to you, as a software engineer I have to clarify... they actually ARE and they AREN'T at the same time. They AREN'T listening in the sense that there's not someone with one cup of a headset up to their ear scribbling notes furiously on everything you say. But they ARE in that they implant trackers on your browser (even if you never visit one of their sites) and use it to send data back to their servers about what you do to build a profile on you so they know who you are, what your life situation is like, what you like, what you don't like, etc. all so they can decide what to sell you. Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa also constantly record sound in a rotating buffer and stream it back to their servers for evaluation by their central language parsing algorithm. They claim that audio is not stored but Amazon would not submit to a police request to turn over the stored data on an Amazon Echo owner whose echo microphone may have picked up audio of his murder.
It's likely they just store semi-anonymized transcripts of all the audio their devices pick up and fold that into the aforementioned profiles. That is one explanation for how you can be talking about wanting to get a new car and then suddenly get new car ads. But the more likely explanation is that you visited a car website recently or did a google search for something car related or else the profile picked up on you google maps-ing directions to a car repair shop. A lot of that surveillance also takes place through tracking done via apps that leave location permissions and microphone permissions active even if the app is "off."
Anyway, overall a great video and like I said... these profiles AREN'T targeted surveillance like the delusion would insist. It is a broad surveillance performed on everyone everywhere all the time. It is a huge violation of our rights to privacy but because our governments like having this data available to target voters and get info on citizens quickly who are suspected of deviance they are not keen to do something to change it. Also since most people don't know, don't care, or don't understand why they SHOULD care there's no political will to do anything about it.

That is a pretty deep read of Paper Towns by John Green. I guess I need to re-read it now. For me, I thought it was about mapmakers putting copyright info in their maps to make sure no one steals their ideas.
