Jason...Great video! Responsible sparring also greatly benefits those who are initially fearful of any contact. Many of whom unfortunately never step back into the ring after a "beat" down or two.... Deleterious? Way of the intercepting vocabulary...🎓

This is the one thing I have been preaching for 20 years. First off, if you train martial arts and self defense is on your list of why you train, you need to train full contact sparring, ideally you do mma sparring. You need to do drills and need to free fight. During the week, drills and timing sparring, you shouldn't even need a mouth piece or head gear, I even say no shin pads. But 1-2x a month, 2x at max, you need to spar hard to asses how they handle the pressure. 3-5 rounds only.

Hi Sifu J. Fantastic video as usual. I do think the method works indeed. If we consider how to make it work even better? When the perpetrators attack make sure you get defenses out LONG. Then maybe use a DIRECT MOVEMENT. I’m towards a soft target. Once she has her hands in one of those we can score a staggered rhythm hit to another soft target. This makes sparring unnecessary and we can begin to target targets having the deflections come out naturally. This is the way I’m training girls when they need advice. Fencing with the hands. He reaches or punches we reach outside then inside then it goes into target and so does our other hand. Just ideas 💡

I may be mistaken about this, but after looking at all of your videos, I did not see any showing actual sparring? I wondered why is that? You appear to have excellent skills.

Excellent video as always. Hope people learns this and get smarter about sparring.
So what's your opinion on headguards?

AlexEinherjar if you go hard it prevents a head butt accident. But you’ve got to be careful because it also makes you a bigger target too. Another danger is that it allows you to hit the headgear without messing up your hands whereas without it you’d injure yourself. For that reason, we make sure guys throw good punches when they’ve got headgear on and don’t get wild.
      Thanks for watching!

    Jason,
What do you think the best drills would be be to develop the skill to see punches coming and also when do you feel the defensive elements should be introduced? I'll also take drill recommendation for that as well if I haven't worn out my questions welcome..☺

Reid Forth good questions. I’d start with this type of sparring drill with a good coach/partner. The more often you see punches coming at you - in as safe and environment as possible (mouthpiece, gloves, etc.) - the better you’ll get at it. Another thing is using the timing ball (top and bottom bag) and things like that because it increases your timing.
      Hope that helped. 🙏

@@JKDandWingChun Thanks Jason. I suppose the old saying is true. If you want to get good at something, you've got to do that thing. I'm planning to introduce a lot more of the slow and controlled sparring to my WO schedule. Take care!

Ha. That might not be very fun if they start punching you, though.
