I get pissed off when I see your reviews dont get a massive amount of views. I think you take on movies with insight and you're very well spoken. I think your reviews are better than a lot of TH-cam critics as well. You deserve a lot more views :)

Hell yea!!! Smile, between the buttons and velvet underground & nico were some of my landmark albums I found as a teen. Staying up late, sneaking out to smoke and diving into my parents records was my nightly ritual. It was the same time I first saw blue velvet and TP. Miss those days....Loved this video. Happy New Year!

@3:30: You're so lucky ! The "Barry Lyndon" track is hard to find even on CD!
I certainly love the reprise for Händel's Sarabande in that movie, and with that duel scene, I'd never even heard it played that subtle and "sneaking" way before!

Someone once said that King Of Limbs makes more sense if you are a fan of jazz fusion; I think that may be why I immediately got into it. "Bloom" to me is clearly based on Herbie Hancock's "Rain Dance", and "Little By Little" is suspiciously similar to Miles Davis's "The Mask".

@6:55: A belated uncle of mine used to frequent his local record stores, as well as the British "HMV" chain, so often that they used to randomly give him free stuff, like shirts, mugs, CD's and movies all the time! And all of this was before there was even a store or business-wide policy to do that!

Love your selection, at least the ones I'm familiar with. A few of my favorites Jazz piano - Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream, Soundtrack - Platoon, Rock - Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing at Baxter's, and Female Vocal - Eva Cassidy - Nightbird. And vinyl, if they're in good condition, still sound better than CDs. They have a warmth that you can't reproduce on digital.

That's a cool collection with some good diversity. I recently got Heroes & Ziggy Stardust from Bowie. It would be nice to have Blackstar on vinyl. I don't have any Radiohead on vinyl & that's a must. I've had fun getting Record Store Day releases during this pandemic. I was fortunate to find them online at record stores before they sold out. I was able to snag great records from the Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick, Rolling Stones & others. I love Angel Olson too. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

Love your channel. Even when I don't agree with your review, I love to listen to your point of view and I will often learn something or gain a new perspective. I also collect vinyl across a pretty wide range of stuff, but one of my absolute favorites and in the same lane as what you are discussing is my copy of Harold And Maude. The music is brilliant and very much enhances the movie. For a long time (like Smile) it was one of the great lost/unreleased albums, until Cameron Crowe of all people put out a small run of it on his own Vinyl Films imprint in a beautiful presentation. It has since been reissued/2022 and well worth seeking out (avoid the 2021 RSD version, it's not good).

Listening ot the Rampal/Bolling Suite for Piano and Flute right now. It's kind of French (obviously) third stream with Rampal's flute sounding more classical and Bolling's piano adding some playful jazz stylings. Lovely stuff, sounds like it should be played at a garden party.

I find it so funny that vinyl has returned. I grew up with records (LP' and 45's) back in the 70's and 80's. The switch to CD's happened sometime around 1988. My last 45 was Bananarama's "I heard a Rumour." and my last album was Ennio Morricone's score to the Untouchables. I agree with you 100% that West Side Story is the best Broadway score. I was able to catch the film at the cavernous Ziegfeld Theatre (now torn down) on 57th Street in Manhattan, back in the early 90's. Brian Wilson is a flat-out genius. Revolver is my favorite Beatles album, too. Two songs stick out: Eleanor Rigby (I played it in junior high band.) and Doctor Robert, for obvious reasons.

Can't even remember the vinyls I had before they got misplaced during a move to the city I currently live in. There weren't very many, and it wasn't music that I was obsessively into.
Now that you've reminded me "Invitation to the Dance" exists, I'm ear to see a review ... especially if you're opinionated on the technical elements i.e Freddie Young's camerawork (the following decade he started working for David Lean).

Wonderfully quirky collection Maggie. As someone who has bought and sold entire records collections I can often read someone's history through what they listen to. This nice thing about your little assemblage is that it is unpredictable. I can never guess what the next piece will be. Which says quite a bit.

I love that you get the tactile/sensory thing that was/is vinyl records. Growing up as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s I played all my parents records until I got my first records of my own. I got the Pink Floyd The Wall double album when I was in 4th grade and my best friend and I used to listen to it on my parents' hifi and scrutinize the scrawled lyrics and the trippy illustrations in the fold-out with all the creepy characters from Roger Waters' imagination. Some of it went over our heads but it was and is one of the most amazing recordings ever made.
I feel bad that kids these days don't have that experience, but then again the instant access to old videos and archive footage from bands is better than we had when we were coming up by far. Still there is an aspect of the ritual of opening a new vinyl record and listening to it from beginning to end that is missing today.

Though when it comes to physical recordings, I don't actually collect any new vinyl, and only CD's, I still have some old stuff from my own childhood and even before : all of it motley crew of random music that doesn't necessarily belong together.
a lot of the "legendary albums" of "Deutsche Grammophon" classical recordings (which I later got from an uncle on CD's, some Beatles, Anne Murray, the Carpenters, Whitney Houston, WHAM!, and some French 60's pop-rock music or "chanson" from the likes of Christophe or Françoise Hardy.

    Hi Maggie,
Came your across your channel recently and followed your IG account. I know that this probably won't be read as the video was uploaded 2 months ago, but here are my top10 albums from the '10s. I own all of these on vinyl.
    1) Julia Holter - "Loud City Song" (2013) [art pop, ambient pop]
    2) Kendrick Lamar - "To Pimp a Butterfly" (2015) [political hip hop]
    3) Grimes - "Visions" (2012) [synthpop, art pop]
    4) Danny Brown - "Atrocity Exhibition" (2016) [experimental hip hop]
    5) Angel Olsen - "My Woman" (2016) [indie rock, dream pop]
    6) 2814 - "新しい日の誕生 (Birth of a New Day)" (2015) [vaporwave, ambient]
    7) Deafheaven - "Sunbather" (2013) [post-metal, shoegaze]
    8) Janelle Monae - "The Archandroid" (2010) [art pop, neo-soul]
    9) Grouper - "A I A: Alien Observer" (2011) [ambient, ethereal]
    10) Jon Hopkins - "Immunity" (2013) [microhouse, electronic]
Based on your taste that you've laid out in your video, I think I'd recommend Julia Holter's album from above most. While I must be transparent in saying that this album is not for everyone's taste (especially as there are some rather avant garde elements at play), I feel like this album would soundtrack noir style films well...there's a mysterious aura about it that compels me to return to it once a month on average.
Thanks for the film reviews, too.

I distinctly remember you saying that vinyl over over-rated and that they indeed don't sound better than modern kinds of recording! HA
But of course, they're nothing wrong with indulging in vinyl, though I do think it's really marketing that targets our own sentimentalism: most people who like vinyl only do because it reminds them of their childhood, or listening to grandma's music, not because it sounds better in any way. After all, my maternal great-uncle collected Nat King Cole recordings in the breakable grammophone records!

It's important to have Vinyl or anykind of physical collection of Film and Music, because as efficient as it is to stream everything lately, it is just essentially digital data which you are kind of borrowing, you dont actually OWN anything there. Even if you actually bought something as download off like Prime etc, if anything happened regarding the licensing of those companies and they change the terms & conditions and their policies, it affects what you stream.
Its always better to own the physical media of something cause then you have the original version which can never be changed or altered over time.

There’s one album that I really love and have given away to friends since you can find it for cheap. ”This is the Ice Age” by Martha and the Muffins. 80s perfection! Check it out If you find it, It’s great! My favourite album is probably Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Hard to beat that.

Wow, really interesting to see _Smile_ in there. It's a real shame they didn't release it back in 1967---it would have been groundbreaking. _Morrison Hotel_ is fantastic.
My biggest item is probably an original mono copy of the Velvet Underground & Nico.

I love music, but have to admit, I'm a philistine when it comes to audio quality :) Got rid of my vinyl collection years ago, because I got tired of lugging them around every time I moved - having all my music in the palm of my hand works better for me :)

You should add Henry's Dream by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on there and the Oasis record The Masterplan.

My suggestion: you should review "SOUL" - head & shoulders the best animation of 2020. Unlike other Disney/Pixar works; more attuned for adults than kids. Cool soundtracks too by Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross!

I think Strange Days is the peak of younger Doors, and Morrison Hotel is peak, older Doors albums.
