Discmania Essence. Pros only use them for rollers ( and they are amazing for that). However for beginners it's also a disc that doesn't require a lot of power to provide good distance and a little turn.
The streamline jet is one that I feel a lot of people miss out on since no pros really throw much streamline. They flip up so nice but still have a very reliable finish on them. My best distance throw is 370ft and it was with a proton jet.
I wanted to try the jet but all the ones I saw at my locals looked really inconsistent. None of them had the same dome, plh or wing to them. The new discmania DD is really nice but flies more understable than I was expecting.
I've thrown 3 400 ft shots in time doing field work. The Jet was responsible for one of them. It's definitely a mold that a lot of AMs are sleeping on, especially if you're trying to to shot shape in tighter fairways that need some distance.
Reminds me of the Getaway from DD. Or possibly the Lots from Kastaplast. Fits in between that Escape and Felon slot. I kept trying to put the Honor or PD in that slot because “that’s what pros do” but I just don’t have the arm speed to get that workability out of those discs. Keep up the great content David. Also, as a fellow Kansan I’d appreciate more course highlights in the KC metro area.
Agree with your point regarding our progression in the sport and the humility it takes to recognize that amateurs are not pros (in terms of power) and that we each have our own game. The discs we bag need to fit our game. I would add that the discs in my bag need to fit my game and the course and the conditions in which I am playing. I was out yesterday in a stiff SE wind that I was not expecting, and I did not have my bag setup for that wind. Appreciate your reviews and discussion.
I took the advice of the Sidewinder early on. I agree that it is a sweet spot disc for many of us throwing 300ft or less. But as someone who has bought a couple dozen sidewinders and thrown them all a couple hundred times the inconsistencies are a bit troubling. You could almost make a full bag of sidewinders each with a different shot shape in mind. I still have sidewinders in my bag but when it comes to replacing them you simply can't buy just one and assume all is well. You have to buy multiples and learn what each do. More recently I tend to suggest Factory Second Sidewinders to my ultra cheap friends, and I encourage everyone else to get MVP Insanities. They offer the same sweetspot for a slow arm but far higher consistency between disc batches. Rookies want cheap molds at the start but serious Rookies would MOST benefit from consistent molds IMO.
Halo beast is my go to distance driver but it’s not in any pros bags that I’ve seen. I throw 325 max with a blizzard wraith but can consistently get 300 with the beast and have a lot of control with it.
My contribution is the Orion LS from Millennium. You said you liked the Sidewinder - you should try the Orion LS, especially in Sirius (Star) plastic. Partnered with an Orion LF, you have a one-two punch of glide and workable lines in a 9-speed workhorse. If you need more variety, get the LS in Standard (Pro) plastic and beat it in for your understable slot, and the Orion LF in Quantum for your overstable slot.
I throw an Innova Star IT. It is my workhorse and is just dependable and glides effortlessly. I never hear pro players talk about it. They may mention the Leopard3, but not the IT.
I like what you're saying, I throw 350' distance controlled and the grand irony is I have bagged an Innova made TD in D-Line for a while now...as my go to roller. It's beat in due to the D-Line plastic and drops that edge without having to try. I'll be crushed if I ever lose it! But to the point of the vid, with my distance it has taken literally over 30 years to come to the realization that while there are times to try and run some 12/13 speed, but throwing them all in a field it can be very educating to see that while the higher speed discs can get out there further, they're not THAT much further than fairway drivers. Pair that with this winter one of the winter-only courses (MN, Brookview) was set up this year to be mostly 250' or less. I made the conscious decision to go to driving putters or mids as often as possible and it has notably made may overall throwing better! My slept on disc will seem odd for how long it's been around, but it's not a sexy new driver so I think a lot of folks (understandably) chasing new hotness skip right over it. I vote GStar Tbird as something every normie like me should have in the bag. Just stable enough to be dependable, but with a gentle fade. It's also cheap to replace--especially as it's always available in F2 on Innova's factory site.
My favorite non-pro mold is the Trespass. Haven't heard many pros throw it and many AMs dislike it because the -1,3 flies more like a -2,2. Just because the flight numbers are admittedly off, doesn't make it a bad disc. Flies like a dream for Intermediate players looking for a step up from the Undertaker-esque slot.
The main part of my game is that I wanted to throw like a pro so badly I spend a year just gaining distance in order to throw stuff like Wraiths and Destroyers.. I can confidently throw over 500ft on a good rip but I'm terrible at disc golf. I'd much rather have great putting and approach with a 350-400ft throw than throwing 450+ bombs and missing every darn c1 putt. I've actually started throwing understable discs like Uplinks and Paradoxes to gain that touch I need. Going well so far, so good recommendation. Focus on putting. Focus on approach. Good video.
Great video! Gannon said in his in the bag that he thinks the DD is underated. He said he loves it for 450 left to right shots. The Latitude 64 Fury is awesome too. More understable than it's numbers.
Gannon had the old innova made DD’s in his bag the new ones are completely different number wise, I love the new DD’s though I’ve probably gained like 40 to 50 ft of distance with them.
@@joshschutte8842 Good call. Just went back and checked the video and he has the old mold, but the graphic on screen gives the new numbers. Sneaky sneakey. I'm loving the new DD too!
It's not just style of game, but probably more so your natural swing. My natural pull is flat to slightly anny, like Ricky or Gannon. Now I've learned to hyzer-flip understable discs and can get those shapes (and so can Ricky and Gannon), but my natural swing being flat lends itself to throwing stuff on the more overstable side. Someone with a hyzer pull will find themselves gravitating towards the understable side of things. Point being: it's natural swing as much as "style of play".
The Underworld is super slept on. It is one of those discs that can be in any bag. Good first driver, great to learn hyzer flips, good to learn rollers. Second is the Bear. I think of it like a slower thunderbird.
I feel like I had a slightly different beginner experience. Over about two months I bought about 22 discs. Yes I agree that was way too many but it was fun to try all the different discs and a lot of them were Christmas presents. But what I quickly learned is that I got a mix of over stable and under stable discs. I think this was somewhat of a blessing because I was able to throw a bunch of discs that flew very differently from each other. I then took the disks that I was able to work with the best and put those at the top of my bag. And ever since then I’ve slowly tweaked the top of my bag to fit my game at that moment. A couple discs that I’m really glad that I got early on are the glitch, the swan 1 reborn, the paradox, the interceptor, and the Muri-kaw (I think the last disc is a special edition version and I don’t know the base version of the disc). I would definitely recommend all of those discs for beginners. Since then, I’ve added a few over stable discs to the top of my bag. I think by having all these desks, I’m able to slowly switch things out as I get better at the game. I went from not being able to throw anything that was over stable. But now I’ve developed better throwing form, so I am able to throw even pretty over stable discs. The only thing I would recommend people against is buying high-speed drivers. I feel like this is falling on deaf ears because everybody buys high-speed drivers at the beginning thinking that it’s gonna be a good idea. I’m not exempt from that. I have 3 12 speeds and 11 speed and a 10 speed and I can’t really throw any of them consistently well. I know they look really cool I get it. Personally, I put some of my 12 speeds on the wall as inspiration for potentially throwing in the future or just as decoration if I’m never able to actually throw them properly. But I would really recommend against it. They look really cool. They usually have the best stamps and some of the nicest plastic but you’re not going to be able to throw it. I’ve gotten much more consistent, but even I don’t really go much over a seven or nine speed. For most courses, a nine speed isn’t even necessary in my opinion. I also think another thing that I did that was a little different ones that I never started watching professionals. I kind of just did my own thing. I watched TH-cam videos on specific discs, but I never faced my bag around a professional player. So for me, I feel like I ended up with a much cooler grouping of discs because I didn’t just buy exactly what everyone recommended. I still ended up getting some of the basic discs that everyone recommends like the paradox and the glitch but for the most part I just bought it looked interesting and tried to get different brands.
I think the Muri-kaw you're talking about is a Lone Star Disc Mockingbird I agree with you. I don't have a player that I model my bag after, I just decided to try a bunch of different manufacturers for different bag slots and I feel like I've found a lot of hidden gems that way. I bag two 11 speed drivers, the Infinite Discs Czar and Maya, but in lower weights (163g and 167g, respectively), and they tend to fly a bit closer for me to what the players with higher speed arms throw.
Another point to add: both of the "overstable" examples are over 6'4" and both of the "understable" examples are under 5'10". You're almost certainly not going to throw like Gannon Buhr because less than 1/2 of 1% of all people are that tall. Even if you can throw every bit as far, your discs probably won't fly with the same flight characteristics as his discs because his limbs are MUCH longer than yours (assuming you're in the >99.5%).
My beginner experience was very similar to my archery beginner experience where I started with low poundage and built my way up. Same issue came in to play because I bought a bunch of understable discs and the arrows flexibility for a 45lb draw are unusable when you max your bow out to 70lb draw. Those discs are in my daughter's bag or I'll even grab a few if I'm trying to get someone new into the sport
Great content for the people! Glad to see your videos again. Your content is always relatable. I am all about the MVP Insanity. It was the first disc I threw well, and now bag 3 of them.
So true. My brief playing 5 years ago, I bagged a Felon and Harp because of Ricky. Harp was awesome, but the Felon was too overstable. The Maverick was money. Just picked up a DD. Love it. Escape was my max distance at 250 to 260. I get about 270 to 280 with the DD.
Innova Mako 3, Discmania Essence, and the Discraft Undertaker I feel are very underrated discs. Yes I know Paul throws and has his name on Undertakers but I think its almost "forgotten" when it comes to their lineup
Nice video Apollo. Thanks for the content. I've only been playing disc golf for just over a year, but I've never modeled my bag after any pros. I didn't even know disc golf existed until December 2022, when I began watching Latitude 64 (Jonathan is the best!) and Bodanza videos, then some Robbie C. I was probably 6 months in before I even heard of the Pro Tour, on a Bodanza video, checked out Jomez Pro and started seeing what discs many of the pros throw. I still have never touched a tee bird, firebird, destroyer, or many of the other popular molds pros throw, mainly because of what Apollo says here, they throw much harder and farther than I can, so I need discs that work w/my arm speed. As I've improved my game I've gotten into throwing more 9 speeds and a couple of 10-11 speeds, but I can pretty much throw my 6.5 - 7 speeds as far as my 9 speeds and farther than higher speed discs. My favorite disc golf company is MVP (LOVE my Envys) but I also have Axiom, Streamline (yes I know they're made by MVP), Innova, Prodigy, Thoughtspace (also MVP), Latitude 64, Clash, Discraft, Gateway, Dynamic Discs, Divergent, Infinite, Trash Panda, and Millennium. Oddly enough I don't have a single Discmania disc. When I first started out I loved the Lat 64 Diamond (8 speed, but -3 turn) which of course went dead straight for my slower arm. Now though since it turns into a roller for my arm speed I love throwing the Thoughtspace Athletics Coalesce (9 speed) and the Innova Leopard (6.5 speed) in Star plastic which hyzer flips and flies straight for 300-320 ft. on a rope! I still watch lots of disc golf videos including disc reviews, but I've stopped thinking I need to buy some other disc to be better at disc golf.
The Dreamweaver from Jester is my TD, it throws slightly understable (for me) and is a little touchy but man, it goes. It can lazer beam some long tunnels when I release it well.
You talked about the uplink but one that i think is underrated from discraft is the glide. It is sadly out if production but sometimes they run them for ledgestone. They are the perfect hyzerflip to turnover disc.
Just bought an old Discmania TDx...hope that disc is the Sidewinder for me. Another good disc I've found is the Falk by Kasta that I don't hear too many people say they throw.
To me I’ve got power and can get full flights out of most disc but one that I feel is kind of in between is the fuse I mean I can manipulate the heck out of it beautiful disc also throwing smaller company disc are always nice like TSA and such literally just watch you or anyone who reviews disc and they give honest thought to the disc that’s how came to decisions with mine off of looking at 3 of them and seeing what was more comfortable
I think your overall point is more valid with pre Covid disc golfers, when McBeth was in his prime. I think post Covid golfers are more educated about this stuff, it was easier to be with all the content.
I was getting worried about you haven't got my weekly dose of apollo lately 😅... always great content dude, one of the best IMO! I throw the DD and it's money, havevto try the TD for sure thanks for the review and insight
I would love to have seen you mention light weight versions of some of the discs pros throw. I don't have the arm speed for the Destroyer but when I throw a really light weight Destroyer (140g), it's my max distance driver
I feel like people miss out on the Core from Lat.64. One of the best slightly understable discs on the market and also goes so far I swear. I’d also say the S line or horizon fd1 right now. All the pros are loving the C lines but for most ams theyre beefy whereas the S line/horizons are incredibly straight and controllable
How would you compare the s-line td vs. sidewinder? Do they fill the sama slot? Star sidewinder interests me but also thinking about the td... Great video again!
I have an old D-Line TD that's very understable. It's good for flip ups or long anhyzers. The problem with Discmania is that they no longer make discs below 170g. I thought this would change once they got back to making S-Line, but sadly it hasn't. If you're throwing under 350 feet there's no point looking at Discmania. I love the Jet and also the SAIL. VIP AIR Sword is gold! It gives weaker throwers the same flight as a Royal Grace gives to stronger throwers. I have never bought what the pros throw. Too fast, too overstable and too heavy.
Do you notice any difference from the TD, and the S line CD1? I bag of Gateway spear. Instead of a s line CD1. But I had a champ td before any of those, I just didn’t want to loose a innova c line TD. So I went CD1-Gateway Spear
Saint like disc can make a new player accelerate learning quickly. Hole 1 Blackhoof blue pin is so difficult .. Nice hole 2 (camera does not give this course justice of difficulty)
you mentioned Roadrunner nice and understable. If i need say one real underrated mold its Latitude Maul flippy from box, i have own 5 last year, but sadly whit ammount of flippyness it has, there is greater chance to lose them. q.Q
I NEVER modeled my bag after a pro. I started by doing my homework on the sport, and started with mid ranges and putters and learned properly. I understand I am the exception to the rule here, but don't say everyone does this :P
I have to disagree i have never bought a disc because a pro bagged it, unless it was a disc I thought would be good for me beforehand. So I've bagged a teebird 3 and a raptor. Tb3 is shapeable overstability, and the raptor was just beef ( I threw only about, 330ft back then). They were both great discs for me and I probably should buy them again, but I just have had other stuff in my bag and haven't needed to.
Most of the people I know didn't clone pro bags. I've been playing for almost 30 years, but I've only been watching professional disc golf for maybe 5 years. I have friends that have played almost every day for 20+ years and never watched professional disc golf ever, and a couple of them are pretty close to 1000 rated. I bet it's something like 5-10% of disc golfers watch professional disc golf, at least where I'm at. As for the TD, how does it compare to the Remix Spartan/TSA Mantra/Mint Freetail mold?
"Better Thunderbird"....No such thing exists. I believe the most underrated discs of all time are the Innova Kite and Skeeter. Those two, good God they are great discs and pair perfectly.
@@beeroutdoorsbriggs8125 Gstar, might be hard to find. Try for max weight. Be aware, they are a bit touchy but they'll fly how you throw them pretty much.
The Essence is definitely more understable! The TD flies more like a -1 turn... The Essence is much easier to get to turn, and definitely wouldn't have held up to the winds from the tunnel throws
I'm curious where the TD fits in amongst the Zeta Moon CD1, C-Line CD1, Vanguard and (Meta & Neo) Essence. For me the ZM-CD1 and Meta Essence are pretty similar, with the Neo Essence by far the flippiest, with the C line CD1 and Vanguard pretty similar on the straighter side. Not sure where the TD would fit in. And the faster side I have (flippy to stable) DD, beat in Grace, and a stable Tattar Grace
Threw the TD at Heritage today with moderate wind at times. With mo wind thrown OK it's basically a Vanguard - stable. Thrown with good power it'll flip up a little. With a nice headwind it's much flippier than the Vanguard but will fight some. It might find a place in the bag ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Discmania Essence. Pros only use them for rollers ( and they are amazing for that). However for beginners it's also a disc that doesn't require a lot of power to provide good distance and a little turn.
Love the Essence
The Essence is great!
this is my 380' downwind driver. any am that does not have this disc in your bag, what are you doing?

I picked up a Mamba the other day and it works really well for me as long as there isn't a lot of wind.
The Uplink you mentioned is already in my bag.
You should try a roadrunner and sidewinder in star or champ plastic
Innova beast is good too. Similar numbers to TD

Maverick is solid!
The discreaft heat. I have a very beat in one for my rollers and a more stable one for slight flip up shots that I don't need to put much power into
Thanks for the great video. Will need to try out the new TD, looks like it would be a very workable driver for medium arm speed. Thanks
Legacy Patriots no one throws them and they are always available in all disc golf shops.
The Dreamweaver from Jester is my TD, it throws slightly understable (for me) and is a little touchy but man, it goes. It can lazer beam some long tunnels when I release it well.
I used to bag A mix of eagle and simon discmania bag but now i’ve ventured off and made my own still sticking with the shield tho!
I have innova 2 made s-line the are stable, and I love the discraft heat
You talked about the uplink but one that i think is underrated from discraft is the glide. It is sadly out if production but sometimes they run them for ledgestone. They are the perfect hyzerflip to turnover disc.
I'm excited to try the new TD. I found an old Innova made one and it was excellent. Sadly, I also lost it doing field work.
The ORC is the greatest disc i have ever thrown.
I throw the DD and it's money, havevto try the TD for sure thanks for the review and insight
weird thing: lately, my favorite pros have been changing their bag to look like mine...
The Rythm by MVP is such a great disc. Highly recommend for anyone with a slower arm speed.
Sapphire gold orbit is what I throw in this TD slot. It carves long wooded fairways
Wasn't going to get one but you convinced me lol. Grabbed a Teal one from your shop. Keep up the great content my friend!
Excellent comments of benefit to all Ams. Thanks for doing this video.
I was just scrolling through yt and found your page didn’t know your a kc dude had to subscribe I live 4 minutes from black hoof dope vid
River and Maul are discs that MPO is not throwing, but SO good for slower arms.
Been waiting for this one for a long while, can't wait to check them out ✊
1:55 actually my bag is full of cool and unique disc stamps lol 😂 now i only wish i could play as cool as my discs lol 😅
Pros have bags too? Oh wow, they are so like us!
Underworld by Westside discs, very glidy and versatile fairway driver
So glad you’re back! 🎉🎉🎉
"Better Thunderbird"....No such thing exists. I believe the most underrated discs of all time are the Innova Kite and Skeeter. Those two, good God they are great discs and pair perfectly.
What plastic for the skeeter? I have dx and it is too finessey imo
@@beeroutdoorsbriggs8125 Gstar, might be hard to find. Try for max weight. Be aware, they are a bit touchy but they'll fly how you throw them pretty much.
Buying a disc because a pro throws it is something I have never done and something I will never understand. Does this new TD have the anhyzer top?
Sidewinder is very slept on
The z sting is amazing
I throw 500’+ and I cycle pro thunderbirds for this slot… every arm speed can use a disc like this
The Sidewinder is my Destroyer and Teebird
The Malta is my Firebird
The Glitch is my Roc and Aviar
*Flicks forehand..* Smacks tiniest branches..'I haven't played in awhile..' 😂 I snorted. 😢🎉 We all been there. 0:46
Honest opinion and I agree! But, shhhhh! You might influence disc sales. Not!
Td vs Essence ?
The Essence is definitely more understable! The TD flies more like a -1 turn... The Essence is much easier to get to turn, and definitely wouldn't have held up to the winds from the tunnel throws
Gregg Barsby knew about the TD 😏
sidewinder comment is CRAZY. Most underrated disc is the gateway spear. nothing from innova or discraft could ever be underrated
I too love me a good Gateway Spear!
The Bite by Latitude 64!!!

WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN!
I took a little break after the holidays!
@@ApolloDiscGolf 🙌🙌🙌
Berg flies just the same. 🤷🤷
Berg distance competitions are the best.
barsby threw a td, the famous std comment
If I buy one of these TDs and if is a shithouse flip monster I will be pisssssed.
pog
Blasphemy
@dgadisc Undertow is one that i am liking right now.
