    this is nothing but impressive! it blows my mind what they were able to achive on snes with that chip. The fact they put so much effort into a lot of little things they could have skipped on because of the advanced technology and considering how expensive it must have been to make, its admirable to say the least.

    This game is amazing! I bought this game new back in 94 and played the hell out of it. I bought a mint copy last year for $4 and it brought back so many good memories.
    I have no issues with the controls. After not playing this game for 20 years I was able to pick it right up again! It's so much fun for me lol. I have so many games in my collection but this one I can pickup and play no matter what.

    This game could have used some blast processing.

    • @gozinta82
      @gozinta82 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +KWKBOX That's why Genesis had Doom and Wolfenstein....oh wait, that had to come out on the 32X in order to run on sega hardware...LOL

    • @KWKBOX
      @KWKBOX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      gozinta82 They went the route of exclusives like Zero Tolerance instead of more ports.

    • @gozinta82
      @gozinta82 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KWKBOX
      Yeah, but that doesn't compare ;) No hate toward Sega (I own a genesis too), but I don't think blast processing would've helped Sega port Doom to the Genesis.

    • @youtubasoarus
      @youtubasoarus 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gozinta82 The 32X was actually a standalone unit that was actually the same thing included in the Virtua Racing game. So in effect, Sega had a superior offering. Virtua Racing was released for the Genesis (with the 3d processing chip included in the cartridge like nintendos version), but later came out for the 32x too with more cars.

    • @gozinta82
      @gozinta82 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      You're telling me the exact same hardware in the 32x is inside of the virtua racing cart. Then why did Sega have to build an addon and charge their fanbase more when it could've just been stuck into respective cartridges for less? I would imagine the chip included is a simplified version that uses some of the same methods, if anything. The thing is, SuperNes was doing most of what the 32 bit consoles did (minus FMV and CD music) w/o any attached addons (other than the FX chip). Genesis needed a boost in order to do so. No hate, I love both systems, but let's be honest here.

  • @atomicskull6405
    @atomicskull6405 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Super FX chip was further developed into the ARC family of RISC processors which are still being developed today. Argonaut spun off ARC systems which was acquired by Synopsis in 2010.
    The Super FX chip works by generating a 256 graphics layer that is used to draw polygons. A few games like Yoshi's Island used it for improved bitmap graphics instead (more colors, better scaling and rotation effects). The SNES actually has extra pins on the cartridge port for additional graphics and sound chips so it didn't need any external connections to add another graphics layer like the 32X did on the Genesis .
    The Genesis's graphics chip has extra pins for more video RAM and color pallet RAM but they were left unconnected, there is also no way to directly access the GPU RAM from either the cartridge port or the expansion port which made implementing a polygon coprocessor on the Genesis inefficient. It had to generate tiles that were then downloaded from RAM in the cartridge and moved to the video RAM for display by the Genesis. This also crippled the Sega CD's scaling and rotation processor for the same reason (it would have been much faster if they had been able to just add a block of shared video RAM to the Sega CD)
    The System C-2 arcade board uses the same graphics chip as the Genesis but uses twice the VRAM (128K) and external color encoder and CRAM. (it also used a 10mhz 68000, eliminated the Z80 and PSG and used a different DAC)
    Interesting fact, the Genesis GPU is a 16-bit upgrade to the GPU that was used in the Master System with the legacy graphics modes removed (it still supports the SMS relevant modes but all of the really ancient modes were taken out). The Master System GPU in turn was an enhanced version of the Texas Instruments graphics chip that was used in Colecovision, MSX and the TI-99.

    i still love this game. it has so much personality and great environment/car/track design. also, though i know it's not saying much by today's standards, SRFX actually had one of the highest framerates for a poly-based game at the time of its release, and it technically ran on the super FX 2 chip which was even burlier than the original SFX that powered star fox. the controls take a bit of getting used to but i found them second nature and not quite so laggy/twitchy once you're used to them.
    great video as always (:

    My little bro used to rent this game when we were kids and I actually bought a copy myself before I decided to sell my snes collection. Fun game. I liked super mario kart better tho and we also had the top gear racing game for snes. I always played as the motorcycle dude and at the stage close to the water. I always ended up going over the side rail and into the water too, usually from driving too fast.

The framerate fluctuates and isn't buttery smooth but it's still more than playable in the actual sense of being drivable. It's really a quite polished little game, with nice graphics, and a lot of thought put into the design. The issue is pretty much entirely the framerate. Had this been released on a slightly more powerful machine, it would have been a really fun, cartoony little racing game. The low frame rate renders it nearly unplayable, though.

    Are you using Retron 5 or original hardware hooked up to an xrgb mini?

    I was able to get used to the crappy FPS over time, but the FPS is the thing that stands out most about the game.

    Nintendo needs to make an HD/60FPS version of this for the WiiU eShop.
    Get on that.
    Also, I just have to point out the SNES doesn't have L1 and R1 buttons: just L and R. Though, I guess being the only ones technically makes them de facto the FIRST ones, too...

    Although they're very blocky the graphics are still kind of appealing. Shame it runs at about 10fps.

    I wish I could send you my copy of Lobo for the SNES to review, but unfortunately it's my only copy. Hopefully one day someone will make reproduction copies of Lobo for SNES again by using the rom file I uploaded on my website.

    Would like to see it running on Virtual Console with 60 fps or in a console like Nintendo DS...

    The frame rate reminds me of Dark Souls 2 PS3 ver.

    While the snes can do polygons via software at 2 or 5 fps, the super fx2 chip crunks it up from 5 or 10 to 15 fps,but even that wasn't enough to run this game smooth and eventrough it compeated against sega's virtua racing game on the genesis wich contained the svp chip, that svp chip has a much better polygon count and smoother frame rate then that super fx chip.
    But both games proves the expansional capabilities of both consoles.

    Seems Nintendo and 'track memorization' have something in common..! (see F Zero GX review)
