Anyway, I was listening just now and for the first time I noticed Phil mentioned the book Heaven. I cannot recommend this book enough! It’s written by Randy Alcorn and it is so amazing! I watched a different video of him examining how he plays and he said he likes to down tune his guitar a whole step...I tried it and you get a deeper tone like Phil.dlong that
+John Kim I think you are right about his having some effects on his guitar, but my own personal acoustic sounds quite similar when I can get the right set of strings and get them on just right. He is obviously using some sort of echo effect to a small degree. I have no idea what the heck it would be, it sounds totally awesome though. Your guess about it being a chorus might be right though, I am not at all an expert nor am I sure at all on way or the other.

Hey mate, not sure if you got your question answered over the past three years, but I'm happy to give a basic explanation here and go in depth if you'd like :) He's using a tuning style called DADGAD (low E dropped to a D, A, D, G, B string dropped to an A, and High E string dropped to a D). This gives it a really open sound. That said, the way you play your chords will also change, as regular chord shapes won't work in that tuning. However, for this conference, what Phil has done is taken that tuning a step down further - CGCFGC, hence that really low sound. and for the second song, it was layered over with some delay.
