Love your videos, has really helped me with my home plating setup.

Nice video.... I went through all of this and decided to but new zinc plated hardware, then just dip it in yellow chromate. In the end, I think it’s cheaper once you factor everything needed and your time. There are other things on the project list that could be getting done.
Specialized hardware and brackets are the head scratcher... should I just plate these parts, or send them out to a shop, to get consistency....?

All zinc plated hardware is passivated with chromate at the factory. There are many colors of chromium salts. “Blue” chromate looks gray like zinc itself. There are also greenish and black passivates. Raw zinc is very acid sensitive and can be damaged by sweat and stripped by acid in tomato juice.
Unless you are dealing with rare parts sending to a pro is cheaper and faster. There is a risk they will lose something but otherwise they charge per pound and do a good job.
This is strictly for education and enjoyment of the process.

I agree, the new hardware is likely coated with clear chromate. I applied the blue over it and it did dull the finish.
From the zinc tank, I’ve read to go blue, prior to yellow, and it does impart more of a “pop” to the yellow, which was pleasing.
I did find a plater, who was willing to work with me. This in itself, was difficult to find. He wants me to prep all of the parts and told me the parts would come out, only p as good as I prepped them. He didn’t seem too interested...
I’ve yet to drop parts off, to him. I definitely don’t enjoy the process, lol.

Where did you get the ceramic mixed media?

    • @compulsivediy8036

There are vendors who sell it on Amazon.
Supply and vendors are inconsistent and prices are high. It will last forever if you wash it. For my hobby a 50lb bag from a proper industrial supplier made no sense

Thank you for the quick reply!! It says it’s not abrasive, I have been using the gray and the green pyramids to polish motorcycle transmission gears. Do you think this is like either of those 2 products?

I don’t know about steel gears and appropriate media. I know that ceramics are used to deburr steel parts. The green pyramids are used for aluminum products in industry. Green plastic media is supposed to be too soft for steel. There is abrasion with all these but it is very fine, like a 40000 grit polishing compound, not like 36 grit sandpaper.

Why not sand blast and then go to polish with tumbler?

    • @compulsivediy8036
      @compulsivediy8036  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, I have done that since I made that video. When I got the tumbler I was new to restoration and hoped that the tumbler will do everything for me like a robotic surface finisher. Real life involved more hands on work standing at the blast cabinet.

To improve your rust removal, prior to any tumbeling you should soak your parts in a bath of Apple cider vinegar.

I am laughing and crying at the same time. I too was seduced by the allure of tumbler. I too did not get satisfactory results with the green media and a more abrasive media. I wish I would of reviewed this video before wasting time and money. OH the lengths we go to get clean bolts that no one will see but us.

I know............. I blame the Eastwood catalog company. They decided that they can sell media used in aluminum manufacturing to clean bolts. It is almost a scam.

what is the capacity of that tumbler?

There is no standard way to compare them. They do not report volume. Here is the linkrocktumbler.com/thumlers/model-uv18.shtml
