Recently bought an E92 325i, will now be checking this, especially after the drainage blocked on my previous car (Skoda) and about 30 litres of water p***ed into the footwells one night after work 😩
Common problem with the E9x. Used to clean my drain points ever couple of weeks. It also looked like someone has chopped a hole in the edge of the fusebox for a wire to go out as well, and not put any sort of grommet in it. That won't help the moisture problem either.
Had this issue on e39,s f10/11. It’s more common than you’d imagine, poor design and with right hand drive models I’d check the yellow gromet and just replace otherwise you might end up with water in floor of the car. I’ve modified my e39 and f10 drainage so this issue can never happen again.
Unfortunately bmw aren’t the only ones to suffer from poor drain management like this, the main worry you will have if the ecu is water damaged is where that water has traced through the loom. I had a transit connect recently that went through a small puddle and the water traced to the ecu and damaged pin 19 which was the crank sensor signal so I had a crank sensor fault code… it happens to loads of cars why the ECUs aren’t house in board in all cars I have no idea sucks.

my dream garage : BMW M3 and a trailer/towing car combo to recover it when it breaks. Jokes aside, I hope it will dry out and work for you. I remember cleaning these drains on my E92 and while the removable grate seems convenient, it's also very flimsy and moves about... not good design when you have ECU next to the drainage ...
I had this after 3 months of owning mine. 13 plate frozen silver. Was tuned did the same. £2200 later new ecu then another trip to evolve ! I always clean out now every so many washes, the ecu was corroded and sat in stagnant water !
Remove passenger side wheel arch lining. Drill 2 additional 10mm drain holes under the ecu box. Paint the exposed metal edges. Job done. You won't have the same issue again. One of the first things i did on my E92 after buying. Common issue. Well documented on the BMW forums.
That is so unlucky but at least you know the issue. Fingers crossed it’s not too expensive. Like everything in life it’s a learning curve. Good luck :)
That’s gutting mate. My old M140i had to have a new DME due to supposed water damage. I didn’t see the car for 3 months due to the chip shortage at the time. Hopefully it isn’t as serious in your case and the M3 will be back as soon as possible 🙏
As a bmw e92 owner u should those drain holes get blocked I used to pressure wash mine every couple of washs more so in the winter they always get blocked 🚫 with leafs and crap
I used to own an E92 and I found out that it has a chance of missfiring if you go below about 10% fuel. And if it missfires, it goes into limp mode until reset..... unbelievably poor design.
Reminds me of driving 30 years ago, rainy damp cold days you couldn't 100% guarantee it'd start 😂 Nowdays we're spoilt, -10°c and snow or 35°c sunny and we demand our cars start everytime without a drama 😂

Oh come one hardly thats hardly fair, most cars in the last 20 years or so have ECUs that can get damp/wet for many reasons, saying German engineering is a rather lazy generalisation
@@kamilianos I wouldn't because its impossible to keep it in nice condition. First parking here in Sthlm and you end up with 3 doordings. I rather daily a Dacia and keep my precious in the garage which I do 😁

I in my M3 clean this place after the season before winter and now I see that it can really save trouble

Iv owned two of these e93 M3s , amazing cars but you cant daily them. I did for 6months amd cost me 3 grand in fuel alone
me too, plus actuators , rod bearings , bmw warranty and fuel . Cars a moneypit.

I was lucky with my E60 M5 as when I cleaned all the drains out they were all blocked and my ecu was not many more west days away from taking a swim
Why send it off? Surely just use a heat gun on and let the rest of the water drain out

E92 are old now , very dated much , slower than modern then m cars whilst having a lot of reliability issues
