- I've always made guide videos for people who already know their way around the valley, not realizing that I've neglected to make a video for the absolute beginners, so I'm finally going to fix that! Just in case you want to watch the video, but don't need help with controls or something, I made a lot of chapters so you can skip to whichever part you like!
Sections:
0:00 - Intro
0:35 - Starting a New Farm
2:25 - Controls
3:59 - Getting Started on Your Farm
5:22 - All About Energy
7:22 - Time, Weather, and Seasons
9:18 - A Tour of the Valley
19:00 - The Pause Menu
25:58 - How Do I Unlock it, and What is it Good For?
32:43 - A Few Extra Tips
Here's the lofi Stardew Valley music I use a lot:

I think the most valuable thing I heard from this video is that everything repeats and there’s no need to feel rushed 😭 I was totally overwhelmed by the short days when I first picked up stardew valley, and since I’ve played after watching this video, I’ve been completely obsessed. Thank you!!!
I needed to read this, thank you. I don’t get a lot of time to play so I was really worried about that’s stressed out feeling I’d get when I had days when I couldn’t log into my other farming/“chill” games and there’d be something I’d miss or my crops would die or something lol I hate that feeling and I just want to relax and farm.
sameee I'm like why time is so fucking fast like I'm a farmer give me time
For some reason hopping into the game for the first time I felt like I was rushed and there was some hidden deadline idk why, maybe cause time goes by so fast in the game 😂
Same!! I felt like if i didn’t complete everything in the first two years i would somehow lose?😂 Nice to hear that i can really take my time and enjoy the slower pace
I just started playing.
I just set one goal per day, like, today is a mining day. Or, today is a fishing day. Made it seem more manageable.
“You can use a pickaxe to break the ground, not that useful just for aesthetics” has single handedly saved my play through I’ve been waiting for the accidental spots to go away for days lol
LMAO
Same
I love how Stardew Valley players crave stardew valley videos that even if they have 400 hours in the game, they still watch it because it's interesting
Everyone plays differently.. likes and hates different characters and because of that is why sdv players watch others.. familiar game but every play through is completely unique
Honestly it's just because I'm a goddamn idiot and don't realize something obvious unless it's pointed out to me
Fr. I’m a new player. Actually new to the whole genre. I’m usually a first person shooter type but this game is like tangible anxiety relief. I will say coming home from work after 12 hours and farming is more relaxing than going to war lol 😂
@@JesusChristTheQueerProfit obviously true
I love it only 40 hours but it's absolutely amazing
To all the beginners, I'd like to say that your daily luck probably affects less than you fear. Geode-cracking and monster loot, for instance, are not affected by your daily luck. I'd say the most important thing that it influences is the chance for a staircase to appear in the mines. Just don't let a "bad luck day" keep you from having fun :D UnsurpassableZ has a great video on this:)
😍
Oh my god it doesn't affect geodes???? I have saved up geodes for good luck days for 100 hours of playing....
@@CrimsonNyx ikr, I used to do the same. My understanding is that geode loot is predetermined based on your seed, not even rng based
Damn, the placebo effect had a bigger impact on my earlier years than I thought 💀 it’s a shame it doesn’t actually affect geodes or loot lol

My tip is:
Keep all the grass on your farm. Then get a silo and then you should cut the grass. This will give you plenty of hay to feed your animals. Also constanly grow grass! Also, dont throw away all your clay. You will need it for the silo and other important things.
Wait, I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, I bought the game 2 years ago and i haven’t even opened it yet but I plan on starting next week..
So do you mean don’t clear any of the little grass clumps (?) when I start my farm and keep them there until I get a silo? So the grass doesn’t grow back until I specifically plant it or does the grass grow somewhere else like not on tillable land? I’m so sorry lol I realize that’s way too many silly questions but any help is super appreciated. I don’t get a lot of time to game, hardly any at all. So I don’t think I’ll do more than one playthrough so it’d be awesome to be as knowledge as I can. I genuinely appreciate any info for beginners! Thank you!
@@SwedePotato314 Grass will grow on its own, but it does take some time. The benefit to waiting until the silo is that you can then clear all the grass you've hoarded to get hay. Since you have left all the grass, you can get a ton more hay. If you clear all the grass before getting the silo, however, then the silo is nothing more than storage, and you'll likely have to buy some hay from Marnie.
dumb question but what is grass? I'm sickleing a lot of that green stuff but you're talking about something different right
@scooter825 the grass isn't anything like the crops. It is green in summer and spring and when you walk on it it slows you down.
Can’t you just store all the grass you collect?
as someone who gets insane anxiety from anything timer based (majoras mask was difficult omg), this was really helpful! the combination of limited energy and short days was really stressing me out and making me want to avoid playing despite so many people recommending it to me. I'll give it another go! thanks for the tips!
I have also never been able to play through Majora's Mask because of that, so I get it!
I think it’s important to mention to new players that you will get increased energy throughout the game and it’s generally hard to miss that!
Always buy the silo first, then a coop. That's my top tip.
The silo is only important for the winter as animals prefer eating fresh grass. My top tip is to NOT fence your animals in so they feed themselves and don't scythe away all of your grass, letting it regrow every day. Selling their produce makes it much faster to buy a silo. Also, save all of your fibre and buy the grass starter recipe so you can plant more if your animals overgraze.
Only if it's winter, Animals can eat the grass outside
@@catpoisonlover Not on rainy days they can't. So the silo is needed if you don't want to buy hay from Marnie.
I did a mistake and bought beer on my first day for Shane..
Hehe I named my farm “farm farm” so my farm is named “farm farm farm”
Same by mine is FarmyFarm farm
this made me laugh

Currently playing with my friend who’s never played before and I didn’t realise there’s so much to explain to him about this game! This came at the right time!
me too!! my friend and i were literally talking about this yesterday and then BAM. new salmence video
Anyone want to play with me please 😟 send me your discord or anything
Something that greatly reduced my stress when I learned it is that unlike the Harvest Moon games crops don't die if you don't water them. They don't grow either, but there's no need to panic over however much money is gonna go down the drain if you forget. Not sure if this is something everyone except me thought was obvious but I never would have figured it out if I hadn't stumbled across it on the wiki one day
I also thought they would die if I didn't water them! I was so relieved when I found out the truth 😂
Thank you!
i just found out from ur comment Harvest moon gave me a pstd that the first thing i do is water those crops then i check the tv
Nothing happens to animals either
+ very important tip!
i have 200 hours but im watching anyway
Im on 115, here's to hoping I get to be like you!
This editing style and narration is just too pleasant to pass up
Dude same
I have 1400 hours and I still barely have a clue on what's going on
Only 200 hours?
This is probably the 5th attempt to start this game. Everytime I tried to play it I got overwhelmed by the choices and I didn't know what to do, so I really hope that this guide will help me a lot!
Same here, I need something telling me "go here" "do this" atleast for the first hour
I was definitely also caught off guard by the amount of freedom this game gives you, and barely any guidance! It makes it fun in its own little way though
@serg10xm.69 just do what you feel like feeling. Sure you'll have some responsibilities if you want money like watering your crops but after that you want to fish, fish. Talk to the local floozies. Do that.
All I'm doing is farming, clearing the land and talking to one girl. Two if I can find the other. Other than that. I'm mining and fishing when I can. Once you're steady with cash is usually the part where you start exploring.
To those playing on console I recommend you put your sword next to your pickaxe in your hotbar it makes it much easier to switch from pick to sword while in combat
Good idea, imma do that, thanks!
Thank you! I see so many PC specific tips and while I play a lot of games on PC, I play this one on console so I can play handheld in bed, it’s my chill game lol so I appreciate these console tip thank you!
Just like how I do it in minecraft.
Thanks
Yeah I did that
If any beginners read this, to expand a little on the Museum Collection (in the Library). Mostly everything can be donated as soon as you get 1 of them, but I would recommend hanging onto these ones UNTIL you have at least 2 of them: Dinosaur Egg, Prismatic Shard, and Diamond (optional). I'll explain each (and I'll try to keep it as spoiler free as I can in case any want to figure these out themselves!):
Dinosaur Egg should be saved for after you've upgraded your Coop at Robin's.
Prismatic Shard should be saved until you've unlocked the Bus from the Community Centre and figure out the secret at the Bus's destination.
Diamond can be saved until you complete the 25,000g Bundle in the Community Centre and receive your reward. This is optional because Diamonds are not hard to come by later on in the game, and you'll likely find more diamonds before you even have a spare 25,000g to drop on the Bundle.
I hope this helps (if anyone even reads this)!
Or instead you save a jade for that 25,000 bundle since jades are wayyyy more useful than diamonds
when i was noob in my first playthrough i got a dino egg and a prismatic shard just by luck. but bc i had gotten the hang of the game pretty quick i didn’t watch any guides like this one and donated them both to the museum 😭😭😭
Something which "got" me when I first started playing is that I had no idea that you're supposed to dig up those Fudd Spots with the worms, and I also had no idea that the TV was interactable. I thought it was just a decoration. Because of this, I failed to find some important items until I was well into my first game and finally looked up the wiki.
Hey at least you didn’t sell your first seeds
i always open the wiki whenever i playing so that i dont endedup sell an important item for later
I just bought Stardew Valley and came here because the first day got me a little overwhelmed. I hadn't even planted my first crops or met everyone, it was 10 pm and I was lost and trying to find my way back home. This was very helpful and I feel better now. I can more comfortably resume playing.
yeah especially the quest met people, i endedup wasing my time just to find them, untl later i realize that i can meet all of them in the hunting egg event
How old are you?
Yeah they don't really have a tutorial do they. At least I'd played harvest moon before so I kinda got the gist. But they should really put some on for actual farm game first timers
With 800 hours in this game this video has been very entertaining
Goddamn. I applaud you
are you okay?
@@bloodgod1102 honestly I'm great,I haven't played as much in the past 2 months

I have played 400 hours but by watching your other guides I still keep discovering new things. So you bet I also watch this beginners guide!
A real correction, Salmence misspoke when he said you could give two gifts per day. He meant two per week. As far as I can tell, there is a hard cap of one gift per day, two per week. An exception is that you can give somebody three gifts, only if you've already given them two gifts that week before their birthday. If you haven't given them two gifts already, the gift you give on their birthday will count as one of the two and doesn't allow you to do a third that week.
As for why you're allowed to do 3 gifts in a week, I assume it's because the bonus for giving a gift on a birthday is so good that concerned ape (the creator) would rather make sure you can, regardless of what you had done prior.
Additional exception I just thought of! When you get married, you can give your spouse as many gifts as you want in a week, though it is capped to one per day I believe.
thank you 😊
@@amsyjo Glad to help! :)
Note: the cutscene to unlock the community center on Day 5 or later will not happen if it's raining, even if all other criteria is met. You'll have to wait the next sunny day to get it.
I started looking at stardew videos out of fear of missing out, that last peace of advice is so comforting that I think I will just stop looking at guides from now on. Thank you
this is a great guide; along with Therm's, these are the best starter guides I've seen for stardew. most other guides are about "how do I maximize profits" or obscure tips that, while interesting, are overwhelming to new players and not helpful for the start of the game. I really liked the town tour, because that felt like someone was really just sitting you down and is like "okay here's where everything is and what it does for the start of the game"
I agree, I am a new player and some of the beginner guides are all about grinding for profit. I am here to have a relaxing, cozy experience.
As a beginner in SDV, I can’t thank you enough for this video!! 💚

Your timing on this video is impeccable! My mom wanted to start playing SDV so I bought her the official guidebook but unfortunately while it's beautiful the text is too small for her read because of her cataracts. Can't wait to send her this video!
There are many starters guides. I would also suggest watching others like Tea Addict, she has season by season beginner guide.
The more she watches the more she'll learn ☺️.
She'll 💕 playing it.
Have a great week 🙂
Is she enjoying is?
35:35 This was first big learning curve that I had to get over as a new player. If you're aiming to accomplish seven different goals all in a single in-game day, chances are you're not going to get any of them done.
that's why the only goal I have is to pet as many rabbits as possible
Damn timer is too fast barely walk to town and already half day gone hate it
I literally not a beginner, I've been playing SV since 2017 but i enjoyed watching the entire 36 mins of the video because Salmence is the best.
"literally"
Thank you so much!! Just started playing and I felt frustrated because I had the impression I wasn't playing efficiently enough. Your video showed me that there's no need to rush and now I also understand better what I should do. Have a great day!
I was so overwhelmed yesterday when I started the game and this helped so much! So excited to play again today and take it slowly ❤
Thank you for this omg. I played 6 or 7 years ago, got to my second spring, and burnt out because of so much perceived pressure to do everything 'right' (I also have ADHD and have some nasty perfectionism as a result). I recently was brave enough to pick it back up on my Switch and it's VERY joyful to just cruise along without feeling the need to min-max anything or look anything up. The tables you've made for some of your other videos are such a nice alternative to the wiki and feel so much less overwhelming than most other SDV content/checklists.
This is probably the most efficient tutorial ive seen on youtube yet, not in SD but in general
Wow, all i got to say is amazing.
Straight to the point, simple, telling us the actual MOST IMPORTANT basic things, and actually showing the audience how its donw with break neck pacing
❤
Thank you for the guide, i played this game years ago and wanted to try it again but i was a bit intimidated because i always had massive fomo back then, but your guide really helped me just to enjoy the game and play it slowly the way i want.
That was the best walk thru for me . Casual and easy to understand. Two thumbs up
I already knew almost all of this, turns out, but MAN i coulda used this years ago! And hearing a clear explanation about the beach farm and about what the heck advanced crafting is--and how the default controller stuff is determined--really was nice.
This was immensely helpful to not only Stardew Valley beginners, but all farming games beginners. Thank you!
Just bought Stardew for Switch a few days ago. This is by far the most helpful beginner tutorial I've found. Thank you!
Ps You also have a very pleasant voice!
i currently have 300 hours in total of playing SV but i love watching your videos because they're concise and organized. i could easily remember it this way 💞

This was really helpful, I'm a new player and have been struggling with what to do and really trying to rush. Your video has really shown me a different perspective and so thanks 😊
Ive got 250 hours in this game but still watched this video multiple times, along with all your other guides. I just really love listening to you explain stuff about the game, the in-depth stardew videos you make are really great :)
This was really helpful! I've been playing Stardew for a little over a month now, and I was able to pick up some new tips and tricks from here. (definitely did not know about the different TV channels to watch on certain days). Looking forward to watching your other videos as I advance. Thanks for a great video.
I've played SV since launch in 2016 and im still watching this lol
600 hours and I'm always learning something new on TH-cam about the game.
You’re epic for that
You are an outstanding teacher. You helped me so much with great info. Just started playing this cozy game. Being a much older gamer, lol, having someone to explain like you do really helps. Thank you.
i hope you're enjoying the game 😊
Thanks, bro. I got this for my wife for Christmas. I watched this so I'd be ready to help her play. Thank you so much.
I JUST started playing with my Stardew veteran friends. This explain so much of what they didn’t tell me. Thanks a bunch :)
i put all my wood stones fiber into the selling bin thinking it was a chest
thank you so much for this guide!! i love your videos it made me feel less intimidated about playing the game bc it feels so big. farming sims usually make me feel overwhelmed w all the big plot and many many side quests but you narrowed it down into bite sized pieces it's much more enjoyable !! 🖤🖤🖤
I played several hours on Stardew Valley, and like you said, got discouraged because I felt I did not make any progress. I wanted to restart, so glad to have found your video first. Now, I’m really excited to restart and, this time, finish, so I will always keep your last points in mind. Thanks for the excellent and very helpful video!
I personally, would also recommend the Four Corners Farm, it has a little bit of the other farm types (Hilltop, Forest, and River) and it is perfect for organization!
Four Corners is definitely my favorite!
I've been thinking about trying it for another save, been wanting to try new things for community center and farms
I was wondering this! I’m about to start my first playthrough so I don’t know which playstyle I prefer and I don’t get a lot of time to game at all, so I’d rather not have to start a new save if I don’t have to. I figured the 4 corners farm was a good middle ground with a little bit of each one, even though I’m playing solo. I was wondering if it’s bigger because it’s meant for multiplayer, like maybe it would be too big and too much for one player to handle but if it’s the same size then I definitely think I’m going to go for this one. I’d read a lot of stuff that said beginners should only go for the forest or basic farm, and really pushed away from any other options so I’m grateful I read this. Thank you!
@@SwedePotato314 no problem! I think the four corners farm has the second highest amount if tillable tiles
This is hands down one of the best Stardew beginner's guides I've seen. Absolutely incredible work! Thank you
Thank you so much for this video! I got into the game so I could have a new thing to bond with a friend over, but everything in it just seems so daunting and I have no clue how anything works. But I've seen a lot of random shorts about the game so I know about a lot of stuff, just not how to do or get it.
This video has really helped out, seriously man, thank you 💛
Thanks for making this. I've had the game in my steam library for years and it was always too overwhelming but after watching this im having an amazing time.
i did get discouraged and quit and then watched this and now i feel prepared to play!! thank uuuuuu i've been needing a new game :)
This answered so many questions! Thank you so much 😊 There are so many little details to this game and not a lot of instruction and I struggle with an abundance of choices and no set direction 😂
I already know Stardew Valley but put this on in the background and still really enjoyed it! Thanks so much 😊
I was very confused as I kept exhausting myself, this was probably the perfect video to get me started. Thanks!
I felt like I was playing wrong, and missing something. Now I don't have that feeling and can enjoy it thank you ♡
I’ve made it past the community centre for the first time! I’m not sure if that makes me a beginner or not but I’m still learning so much
I am a very slow player , and on either year 3 or 4 and I learned a lot from this video that I guess I haven't found out on my own yet. Thank you so much! I love how I don't have to feel rushed in Stardew
To anyone that is curious. The number of swings needed to fully take down a tree and the stump is 15 by default. As you upgrade the number will go down.also, when organizing your stuff. Remember you can change the color of chests, though I suggest organizing by type. Organic, minerals, seeds/fertilizer, monster loot, and tools. Also, after doing the community center, I suggest keeping all your low quality forage items, silver or higher should be sold, but flowers and fruit should be kept for other uses.
We don’t talk about what happened at 20:10 😊
did you mean 20:10?
@@alexanderhartjen8749 ooh makes sense
There is one gameplay downside to going Joja vs. community center:
3 of the 21 available points for the Grandpa evaluation come from the CC and can't be gained from the Joja route (one point for the bundles, two for seeing the cutscene that kicks Joja out of town.) You need 12 points for the iridium statue that is the grand prize. It's a lot easier if you take those 3 that are on offer.
I sure did mean 20:10
i just bought/played Stardew today! i definitely felt rushed by how quick the days went by and decided to look up a video that would help me "get everything done" in early game. but instead ran across your video that gave me the best reassurance that i can just take my time. there was a lot of helpful information in this video, after watching it definitely felt a lot easier to navigate! thank you for taking the time to make this video and for reminding people that this game takes time! so excited to learn more and experience all that the valley has to offer :D
This video was sooo helpful! Thank you much for being so informative without spoiling anything! Thank you!!
Great Video Salmence! One correction I noticed: Running out of health only brings you to the hospital if you get reduced to 0 health outside of the mines in the mountain and/or the mini-dungeon where you get the Golden [REDACTED]. If you run out of health there, you wake up at the entrance of the mines by Linus or Marlon, suffering the same penalties as a trip to the hospital.
Spoilers for 1.5 endgame content:
Also, if you reduced to 0 health on Ginger Island, you get woken up at the southern pier by Willy or Leo, facing a greater monetary penalty (5x as much) and the same item penalty.
Yeah if you’re in the area where you get the Golden Scythe you don’t go to hospital

Under the Skills tab is a bar for each skill. After making a career choice, you can click on the button for the 5th and 10th skill to review the choice you made. Once you unlock the Sewer, you can even change to a different career.
24:23 It hits in front of you because tools have a default location that they will hit if they can't hit the tile your mouse is hovering over. You can't axe the tile right behind you like that, so your axe will hit the default location.
Thank you for this! I just started a week ago with no idea of what I should do first and now I know so much more🙏
This video is beyond helpful! I just started playing yesterday and started off a little confused. This answered so many questions I had and now I’m even more excited to play!
You play on PlayStation
This is my first playthrough and I chose the beach farm 🤣🤣 found out towards fall of year 1 you can't place sprinklers in sand sooooo now I've gotta rearrange my whole farm to better accommodate animals and crops 😅 (currently in year 2 of spring)
My biggest gripe so far after a few hours is how terrible the map is.
Which map are you using? I’m looking to play for the first time

Me: has 620 hours.
Also me: “finally some content directed at me!”
Guys. I'm in spring of year 2 on my second save file that I got the community center done with, I've been trying to set up a bunch of bee houses and kegs so I've been in the mines going after dust sprites (I still don't feel that good at mining or skull caverns, Sal's play along file got him a lot farther in the mines) and from a *dust sprite* I got *my first ever prismatic shard*
Congratulations on getting your first prismatic shard! To be honest, I got my first when I kill the grub insect
WOW that's really lucky! i didn't even know that could happen! i got my first from an item code because if i didn't get the galaxy sword i would die in floor 1 of skull caverns haha

This really helped me relax when starting out a new game, it’s been so long since I’ve played and I’ve never beat it, but I was worried about the first few days and how I was going to meet everyone etc etc. thank you!
loved this! i just started playing and i had no idea i could do so much stuff, ill definitely enjoy my time with this game thank you!!!
Playing on 25% profit completely changes the progression curve of the game. It's....interesting, although I went back to default after one CC (mid-year 2 because the traveling cart becomes a lot harder to use for rare items) playthrough. Trying to do a perfection run on 25% profit is something you do because you have way too much time you don't value on your hands.
I just mod my game when I hate time.
I literally just started playing this game again today because I didn’t know what I was doing my first time around. I’m mad I decided to pick the forest with spawning monsters 😅 but what can you do 😂

I stopped playing a couple months ago because I was so confused on what to do. This video made me want to give it another try, so thank you!😁
My current main save is the standard farm. Got 8 million something in gold, my house completely upgraded, the town completely upgraded. The only thing I'm missing is perfection. I'm trying my best to not see spoilers for it.
As an experienced player myself I can vouch for the awesomeness of this video. Very well articulated. No spoilers. Super informative. Interesting, and even kinda funny at times. It was good. Love the video.
Awesome guide! Been thinking of trying this game out. This definitely gave me a good intro for getting started. Thanks!
Correction! The first truly important choice is whether you're getting a cat or dog and what color it is! lol

I am so glad there is a zoom button and that you explained how to use it, Sometimes when I am playing with a friend they have trouble seeing the screen(especially during split screen), I was worried there wasn’t going to be a zoom button in this game, but now I can rest assured, thank you for this important information. Also this video is great, I have only played stardew valley for less than 2 hours because I was testing it out using steam, but know that I know all this useful info it will make playing and learning how to play so much easier, so again, Thank you.

6 hours in and the mine checkpoint just made me irrationally upset. I’ve been trying to figure out how tf I’m supposed to get sprinklers
Another new player rite of passage is happily purchasing a coop or barn before you realize the silo exists, and then all your animals are mad at you as you frantically scramble to collect enough clay.
I am forever scarred by running out of hay during the last days of winter in the original Harvest Moon because the silo literally would not hold enough for the number of animals I had. Yeah, only doing that once.
Part of me blames Robin for that for giving me the goal of making a coop or well first. Like, GIRL my animals will STARVE without a Silo, wym build a well?? 😂

I personally would have clicked the character in the pause menu to show the previous gifts menu.
Good point, I forget about that screen a lot since I usually just look at the wiki for gifts
