My daughters favorite knife is a pink mini grip. Shes 6. Wants a sebenza too. And she's watched hours of Birdshot (loves Frankie) and Nick Shabazz, with dear old dad. She's definitely going to be a knife girl.
I had bought one of those that was a user prototype with a messed up edge and eventually got rid of it. An on line retailer just put a few of these out on their Black Friday discontinued Benchmade sale. I had to have it . . . Thanks for the video! You guys are the best!
The Griptillian is a bad ass EDC knife. When I worked in stocking for Petsmart, I broke down thousands and thousands of box’s, and I’ve probably collectively cut miles of packing tape and plastic wrappings. This knife and the 940 were my best friends. They had fast deployment, sure; but the axis locks made it easy to close the knife one handed. It was a huge time save. The mini Griptillian was mostly my go-to because of how non threatening it looked to anyone who saw me using it. These were honestly the best heavy use EDC blades, and if recommend them to anyone.
I have one it is absolutely awesome. It is in the Sheepfoot blade. It is absolutely fun to flick, wish more of the Benchmades had the Spidey hold on it. It is one of Benchmade better designs.
I've been eying up the DLT exclusive Grip in CF and brass barrel spacers, m390 blade. It's a nice looking knife, but it goes for$ 233 and change. I was planning on grabbing it this month, but ended up getting the Fradon Lock exclusive Manix 2 in 4v and marbled CF instead. The grip will have to wait now, for at least another month, maybe 2. Some of us are just lowly poor folk, and can only get 1 at a time :)
The only Benchmade Bite I've gotten was from a new Bugout I was trying out. Since it's so light, I had to really brace it in my palm to swing it shut with one hand. Also, for some reason the liners in the GFN Grips are about the same size for both reg and mini, so the reg Griptilian sounds a little hollow compared to the mini. (Makes the regular Grip extra thwacky.)
I put Benchmade knives between the gap of my little finger and ring finger resting against the start of my palm (If you know what I mean) when closing it one handed. Because yes they do bite you, I've had tons of tip cuts over the swell of my palm from doing it as well, and I have quite long slim hands.
The Mini Grip is my most carried in the summer with shorts. Both versions are great. Try the bugout clip on the Mini.. You should customize your own Mini Crooked River if you don't have it yet.
My son-in-law has a custom mini. I tried playing with it today and it is just too small for my hands. Definitely would have to look at the regular size.
I gave my Griptilian with the sheepsfoot blade to my nephew.... now I am sad! Lol I will be picking another up soon. Carrying a Civivi Brazen and a Bugout now. I love your videos.
Although I am not a fan of that blade style (Just me most likely) I am a big fan of your videos. I have bought several knives after watching your reviews. Thanks for teaching me. See ya.
I got the Manix 2 in S110v a few months ago and it was the first knife I've had with that type of lock. Needless to say I constantly was slicing my palm closing it till I got the hang of it.
As an industrial plumber i put my knives to work alot to, but im completely Spyderco biased lol. Ive used the Sliveraxe all summer, its been one of the better knives ive ever used. I can appreciate the Griptilian though especially that sheepfoots blade with the "Spydiehole" hahah.. Great video as always guys!
It kills me that people complain about the price of the upgraded Benchmade. Go to BladeHQ and filter by Folding Knife, Made in USA, 20CV and G-10. Sort Price Low to High and this knife pops up as the cheapest option. Remove Made in USA, and this is still the cheapest option. Remove G-10, still the cheapest option. Add in M390 and CTS 204P and you save about $30 on lighter duty We Liner Lock knives and $20 on a lower quality Steel Will. Don’t get me wrong, I love the M390 Modus, I own 2. But that liner on those knives is wimpy. Plus, my CF version has horrible lock rock. There are some Vipers in there. Benchmade customer service trumps all of those brands, hands down. At least in the United States.
I love my Benchmade's as well as my Spyderco's and other knives! I have the Mini- 556_1 in plain old drop point, but I bought it on the cheap, so I'll live with it. I also have the FS Sheepsfoot in all black with the race car material scales. Thx for the video!
Benchmade have taken some knocks lately so it’s nice to see this classic again they also have fantastic customer service. You guys have cheered me up this morning! 😀
I believe Benchmade licensed the hole from Spyderco for that knife. The ball-bearing lock looks somewhat similar to the axis lock but it works differently enough so as to not be copyright infringable.
Good evening guys! Luv the g10 grip beautiful but price dif sucks. Just got the perpetua today in the mail. People have complained? Mine came PERFECT. Talk about one handed. I love it already! Buy one if you can.
Nick Maccioli Hey bud. Just saw ur response. Man that thing came drop shut closing perfectly centered, easily deployed with the thumbstud position (people should try before accusing) no blade play. No complaints.
I have the 551-1 (drop point). I love it, well worth the money. Came perfect right out of the box. It's currently the only Benchmade I own, but am apprehensive of taking a chance on getting another one because of potential centering and play issues. Figured, why push my luck since my grip is perfect, better leave well enough alone lol. *edit:* - if I find a good Bugout, I'll have to have it too. :)
Was getting something to drink out of the refrigerator when I got notification so I sit down at the kitchen table to watch as the wife was fixing supper. 3 min into the video the wife is like click click click click click ugh!!! So now the wife is bitching about the knife clicking sound thanks allot guys lol . I'm headed to the living room lol
The 940 is the only benchmade ive really liked so far. The griptillian handle just feels kind of cheap to me (a good knife otherwise, to be fair I dont like the feel of Spyderco FRN either). I can honestly say Ive never cut myself with my 940. Besides Balisongs (theres a few reasons I dont own one), the knife that has cut me the most times is my ZT 0562. It drops shut so hard that sometimes it bounces back open again partially. Im more careful than usual with that knife.
The plastic grip feels cheap but it served me well for years. I know the g10 versions feel really solid though and tons of aftermarket scales of any flavor are available.
my mint nitrous stryker is all the benchmade any normal human can withstand maybe one day i can work up to a grippy but its a tough go - Cheers n Chirps
I just purchased a griptilan full size , I want some macarta or used g10 but my medical bills are tooo! High do y’all know where I can get some for a reasonable price, thank y’all for all the great videos.
Love my BM 550 grip! The axis lock and that perfect handle shape married to Spydercos perfect Spyder hole blade opening method with that beautifully thin edged sheep’s foot blade in 154 CM. It’s excellent! I do much prefer the new G-10 handles but my original polymer handle is pretty good and at $90 you can’t lose. The 550 grip in my eyes is the most aesthetically pleasing grip as well. Other than the Ritter grip of course.
I cut myself constantly when I use my bugout and I’m trying to gain weight due to being a little on the skinny side. I weigh 135 and I’m 5’5” and if I hold the axis lock strongly enough to cup the handle in my palm, it cuts me constantly, or nicks me. I have to pinch the knife with two fingers and fling it towards the ground with the blade closing downwards. It’s not a fat thing - trust me dude, you’re good.
Love my mini-grip! Actually I've found that Sportsman's Warehouse has in store prices about in line with what I can find at other places online. On a side note, I now hate you. LOL. I didn't know about the customizing thing and that I can get a purple mini-grip.
Matt Baker I’m not sure if there was an “agreement”. There were lawsuits like crazy when BM wanted to use the hole. Turned out a company can’t patent a “hole” thus BM used it. Likewise the patent for the axis lock expired so other companies are free to use it. That’s why recently BM came out with a “new and improved” axis lock so they have a new patent
That's funny. I've never cut my palm like that. I have however, shaved the very tip of my ring finger a couple times. Nothing bloody, but it made me pay a little more attention as I continued to mindlessly fidget flipped.
I just got my 550-1 in August, broke in so I can Spidie flick it open. Glad I got a good one, blade is centered, edge is pretty even for the Benchmade factory, fit and finish is good. Just need to drop some lube in the action to get the last of the gritty-ness out. Great knife. Looking at the 52100 CF Para 3 to bolster the collection.
I'm super skinny, and when I got my 940 (my first benchmade) and almost immediately had the same thing happen. Never hurts to lose a few pounds though!
They get used cause when you spend that much on a pocket knife if better hold up to work! If it holds up we use um and tell ya how much work it can do.. Though Im a manix 2 lw carrier myself (I got it as a gift and I'll wear it out before I sell it ;)
You can patent and/or trademark a hole and they did. Benchmade paid to use it. Edited to add, per HoB on Spyderco Forums: A patent protects functionality, but will expire. A trademark protects a sign, signature, name, embellishment, etc. that the customer has come to associate with a company (or person). The trademark never expires. The hole used to be patent protect but the patent has run out. The hole is now trademark protected. The trademark has to be "earned", meaning that trademark has be used by the company consistently over a longer period of time. If Spyderco would make knifes with and without holes, the claim would be weakened. But since all Spyderco knives (with two exceptions that I know of) feature a CIRCULAR hole to open the blade, and nobody else uses that hole without giving credit to Spyderco, the claim is strong. Since the hole was patent protected, nobody could use the hole for 17 years, so Spyderco was able to build a strong claim. This is also the reason why the symbolic fee for the custom makers licencing the hole is so important. While Spyderco licences the hole it does not reliquish the claim to the trademark, since with that symbolic fee, the custom maker acknowledges the claim. A trademark can be abandoned. If Spyderco would choose not to make knives with a circular hole for a few years anymore, the trademark would soon be considered abandoned and everybody else would be free to use the circular hole as it stands, there is not a single Spyderco folder in production that doesn't have the circular hole. Finally, according to the trademark document there are two important features (as far as I can tell) identifying the Spyderco hole. It is a circular hole. And it is the hole that is used to open the knife. It is important to distinguish that it is NOT the function that is trademarked. The function simply identifies WHICH hole in the blade is trademarked. Those are the ONLY two qualifiers. It doesn't matter which size placement or how many holes are around it or whether the hole is champfered or not. A circular hole in which you put your thumb to open a blade is a Spyderhole. According to the document, you are free to drill has many holes and of what ever shape into you blade, but circular hole can not be used to open the blade and what ever hole you chose to open the blade with can not be circular. You might argue whether this makes sense or not, but you have to realize that you don't get everything granted you apply for. You can apply for anything as a trademark, if the federal "IP office" doesn't consider it an appropriate trademark, they will not grant it, and they have legal experts deciding what can be granted and what can not. Spyderco applied for this trademark and a federal institution granted Spyderco this trademark and made it thereby legal.
@@filthyego8433 that's ridiculous if true.. Like what dimensions? 12mm? 13mm? 14mm? Circle holes? Oval? Square? How far from the base of the tang? I'd love to see the actual TM. I feel that they probably trademarked the phrase "Round hole deployment " But the actual shape? I'm gonna measure my asshole ... maybe it falls under the TM... And its fitting because both my asshole and the TM are full of shit lol
SuperSteel Steve It’s not that difficult of a concept. They patented the hole in 1981 and then over the course of use on every model became associated with the brand. But to address a couple points you were confused on, yes , they specifically trademarked a round hole (I’m sure the comet hole for the bird line is also trademarked). As far as size... come on, really? Can Nike only put one size of swoosh on their products. The Simplest amount of Googlefu will provide the answers to the questions. Also, I added more explanation to my above comment.
Exactly "why" you do not fidget with knives. I don't get how people enjoy want to force swing any knife closed. It is a unsafe practice and not so sure but I doubt it's good for the knife either. I love yalls videos as you have some of the best vids and enthusiasm on TH-cam and you are not alone. Too many on here keep talking about the "fidgetty" factor and I get opening in different ways for sure but whenever you close a knife it should be done safely. It's the same concept with re-holstering a firearm. Whats the hurry ? Deployment I get. But making safe should be exactly that. Just my two cents. Sorry for the lecture. My inner Grand-dad and Father comes out lots lately. LOL

You two are definitely having the most fun of any knife review channel
thanks Matt, it's supposed to be fun :D
I am very glad that I have found your channel. You two are great together. Frankie’s laugh always makes me smile (not an easy feat).
Palm slicing isnt a fat guy issue. I cut my self closing the griptilian about four times the first week I bought mine lol.
My daughters favorite knife is a pink mini grip. Shes 6. Wants a sebenza too. And she's watched hours of Birdshot (loves Frankie) and Nick Shabazz, with dear old dad. She's definitely going to be a knife girl.
haha that's awesome!
The customizability that Benchmade offers is just amazing! I even built a Z-Hunter version of the Griptillian 😂
Nick Maccioli whoa same! I did m4 and gfn (plastic) what did you do?
Riley Bracelin I used S30V bcuz its a good steel that doesnt cost too much
I had bought one of those that was a user prototype with a messed up edge and eventually got rid of it. An on line retailer just put a few of these out on their Black Friday discontinued Benchmade sale.
I had to have it . . . Thanks for the video! You guys are the best!

I have a black half serrated sheepfoot blade and i love it!! I love the wear with coated blades

Btw Benchmade licensed the Spydy hole blade opener for the 550 grip.

The Mini Grip is my most carried in the summer with shorts. Both versions are great. Try the bugout clip on the Mini.. You should customize your own Mini Crooked River if you don't have it yet.
I do love the blue liners
I carried the griptilian today. One of my favorite edc knives.
I like mine but it’s heavy and the bugout wins pocket time most days
It was between the bugout and the adamas, and I went adamas 😂
Literally just picked the drop point 551-1 up! Just got it Monday 🌝 awesome knife
I got my 154cm 551 for 75 bucks brand new when they discontinued the steel a while back. I had to jump on it for the price.
My son-in-law has a custom mini. I tried playing with it today and it is just too small for my hands. Definitely would have to look at the regular size.
That exact thing happened to me too!!! And I have little Frankie hands. Glad to know it’s not just me 🤣🤣🤣
I gave my Griptilian with the sheepsfoot blade to my nephew.... now I am sad! Lol I will be picking another up soon. Carrying a Civivi Brazen and a Bugout now. I love your videos.
I just got one of these and its great, im a spyderco guy so this fits right up with what i like. This axis lock is pretty sweet though
Although I am not a fan of that blade style (Just me most likely) I am a big fan of your videos. I have bought several knives after watching your reviews. Thanks for teaching me. See ya.

I've got the mini.....
Remember how we were talkin about liking smaller knives bird??
Yea.... I fucking LOVE my mini grip 20cv.
It's just awesome
I have one of each and love them. Mini is a bit small for me but still nice.
I have never owned a Benchmade. Which one would you buy first? A Griptilian or a 940? How can I collect knives and never owned a BM. Help!
haha very tough call. These don't show wear like a 940 will, if that helps
I've lost 3 of these. This has got to one of the most popular knives ever.
How the hell do you lose 3 benchmade knives....
You could get 2 grip mini’s for the cost of a grip g10. It’s just soo pretty tho. I want one
Check that-2 reg grips
lol yep
So for classy EDC, 550-1, 940-2, Bugout, 531, Valet?
marissa767 Anthem....you need no other
I wear my bugout with my suit to work. The valet looks reallllly nice though.
CURSED PALM FAT!!!!!!!
Thank you bryan😂
The griptilian taught me to really dislike thumb studs, my full sized would always get caught by them unfortunately
Benchmade have taken some knocks lately so it’s nice to see this classic again they also have fantastic customer service. You guys have cheered me up this morning! 😀
The big complaint I have is the price this is an awesome 140 dollar knife that costs 170, that said I do want to try one
$140 for a big 20cv blade? Not yet lol

I was hoping to hear the Keegan shout out on here :( with my previous comment about him, and getting a custom benchmade mini Grip.
we're sorry! it's gotten pretty tough keeping track of messages/emails etc
No worries. We all still love you two regardless. :)

This might be my first main Benchmade can you hard use this knife like prying light stuff not batoning etc.

Aka SheepsFoot is best style on your Benchmade!!!😎👌

I have the 551-1 and 551. I like the boring drop points! Also got a satin deep carry clip for the 551. Benchmade has such great customer service. 👍🏽🔪
BM and Spyderco made a deal over both issues. I believe it’s a sealed deal that will not be released to public

Same here!
Nick sent me the mini version for free a while ago. Still my favorite knife!
nice score!
LOL Frankie has the giggles! 😆

awesome!
this is why spyderco handles are often longer than the blade. love my mini grip tho
I cut my palm like that the hour after I picked up my 940
Benchmade griptillian or Kizer sheepdog with to you think is better ?
I would want one if it had a flipper and I had money.
And I’m so mad that my g10 mini grip is a drop point! Argh! What was I thinking??
lol sorry PJ!
Sorry about the cut or the unfortunate drop point situation? LOL
Everybody that likes knives.loves this one.i got one love it very fine knive ..its a 🏆 winner.💪
thank you David
@@BirdShotIV keep up the fine knive porn.i love it .a lot of fine knives out there .
I'm super skinny, and when I got my 940 (my first benchmade) and almost immediately had the same thing happen. Never hurts to lose a few pounds though!
haha :D
Glad to hear that the paramedics were able to stop the bleeding!
haha thanks blitz
The court said spyderco can’t Patton a circle. So any company can use the whole.
I’m down with the sheepsfoot as well. My favorite now.
It's not a fat person thing! I weigh 130 and I've done that before.

I thought the P in CPM stood for powder not particle??
The Benchmade palm cut is real, from what I understand and heard Benchmade paid Spyderco for the rights to use the hole in a couple of their knives
Originally Latrobe Duratech 20cv. Great steel man. Love it.
I wish you would talk about the afo 2 auto.its my favorite auto.combat ready.😁
I’d love one but goddamn the price. Especially when you add the g10. I’d go tanto.
They're a hundred dollars if you really wanted one you'd get one.
Great video y'all. Funny as always.
The mini Griptilian with sheepsfoot blade is $84 on Amazon right know.
I have wanted to get a benchmark for so long
It’s like a review Having a hype man in the background
The Benchmade Spyderco? I really have to get one.
Love my benchmade bugout 535 blue and my mini griptillian and my Osborne 940-2 but I am a spyderco fanboy lol
I’m sorry I also wanna say I love ur videos u both are awesome
ThAnk you!
Bugout vs griptilian... who wins?
PM3 and the mini grip bit me a lot at first. I still say Bandaid conspiracy.
Spidey hole is haram for Benchmade knives!

I believe the courts decided that you can't copyright a hole... I may be wrong.

I feel that they probably trademarked the phrase "Round hole deployment "
But the actual shape?
Blade Show West starts Friday. 😀🔪
If you’re in the neighborhood, come on by. 😎
One that I have let go. I think it was because it feels pretty huge in the pocket. Great knife tho 👍
My landscaping hands are too arthritic to middle flick.
LOL
Great job!
Helping that algorithm 🙂
The Griptillian is a bad ass EDC knife. When I worked in stocking for Petsmart, I broke down thousands and thousands of box’s, and I’ve probably collectively cut miles of packing tape and plastic wrappings. This knife and the 940 were my best friends. They had fast deployment, sure; but the axis locks made it easy to close the knife one handed. It was a huge time save. The mini Griptillian was mostly my go-to because of how non threatening it looked to anyone who saw me using it. These were honestly the best heavy use EDC blades, and if recommend them to anyone.
