  • Learn Finnish by listening to this episode about feeling homesick and feeling like an outside in a foreign country. I talk about how I struggled speaking and understanding a foreign language, how I cried in front of my boss and how I developed a new attitude towards my language skills. You will hear Finnish expressions related to falling in love with a new culture, the culture shock that follows and how it feels to not quite understand all the jokes in a different language. If you're learning Finnish and sometimes feel that you can't be "yourself" in Finnish, then you might relate to what I talk about in this episode.
In the Finking Cap Podcast, I speak spoken/colloquial Finnish the way I would to my friend, but a little bit slower. If you're an intermediate learner of Finnish, give it a listen!

Have you ever felt like an outsider in another country? Or even in your own? How did you overcome it?

Yes. I feel like an outsider living here in Australia.
I was born here. But I lived in the Canary Islands for eight years.
When I came back I had a type of reverse reintegration culture shock.

Oh I've heard this can happen, too! What sort of things have you found were hard to adjust to since you returned?

@@learnfinnishwithfinkingcap Uh... everything? No that's not strictly true. Everything to do with work. Dating/friends/work. It seems people are a bit aloof/clicky here. I definitely feel like a foreigner.

@@learnalanguagewithleslie Sometimes I wish we could take some of the things with us when we change countries! What I would bring to Finland: the kind of restaurant culture where people go out for loooong meals and take the whole family with them. I experienced that in Australia, too, but I don't know if that was just the people I was staying with. What would you bring back from the Canary Islands?

Paljon kiitoksia! Mä muutin Suomeen viime vuonna. Haluaisin oppia suomen kielen, jotta voin puhua ihmisille normaalisti. Toistaiseksi valitettavasti ymmärrän suomalaisia erittäin huonosti 😔

Olen australialainen.
