I don't think she meant what she said it's really hard to know you're gonna be without your loved one. Anger is a very real part of the dying process for family members. My mother died from cancer & I remember my dad saying I wish she would just go. It's scary, life changing & unending pain. I have lost both parents & a son & you do want them to pass & then you get that guilt for even thinking it. Jesus did save my family just not the way I wanted & that is also hard to understand. The difference in these people was the faith & it makes death a lot easier. RIP to you all.

At the very beginning and the very end of their story, did you not see her start laughing for no reason and, both times, the laughter leading to uncontrollable tears? It’s very easy to judge her. What’s not easy is watching your beloved spouse slowly die. He is dying and all she can do is sit next to him and watch it happen.

10:50 Sally’s mother knows what her daughter needs- to contribute. When Sally asked if she could rinse the dishes, her mother said no. I could see the pain in her eyes. Then her mother turns around and says “You can dry them!”, and Sally lights up. It may seem like an insignificant moment, but those small things make a big difference. That mother not only loves her daughter, she truly knows her daughter. Beautiful.

The wife of that dying young man was so horrible; just wanting him to hurry up and die. She could have given her boys so much by making beautiful memories with their father, giving them an example of love and selflessness instead of selfishness and narcissism. What a sad and lonely way he had to leave this earth, knowing that his wife was so eager for him to die and do it quickly. She made me truly sick. If she’s still alive (and she could be an old lady now) she would be deserving of a lonely regretful old age.

@@emepleez obviously she was scared of being alone, but her attitude was still horrendous and only could cause harm. My mom was a single mother in the seventies and thank God, she didn’t have the attitude that she just had to hurry up and get hooked up with some guy (any guy) so she wouldn’t have to raise us alone. She did in fact raise us on her own and it was, no doubt, a struggle.

I am lost for words at the behaviour of the second woman. Self centered, selfishness and narcissistic doesnt come close to describing what I feel about her. Her husband is dying and all she can do is think about herself and how she is struggling with having 2 kids after he has gone. Speaking about meeting another man and remarrying when her husband is in the other room dying. She needs to be there for her husband show him care, love and support.

This was a great documentary. All 3 died with dignity and did their best to live out their last days. I wish in the second story he had more peace. I understand his wife was beyond afraid. But if you can’t have empathy for your dying spouse that speaks volumes about your character. What touched me the most was the mother in the first story and the wife in the third one. I can’t imagine the pain both women endured but they gave so much love. It made the process easier for their loved ones. This documentary reminded me that love is all that matters. A life well lived is one a person loves and is loved.

I watch many of your uploads , but this one hits hard. I lost my 15 year old son 5 months ago, he fought a short but brutal battle with colorectal cancer. Gone much too soon. I sort of resent the comments judging the wife in the 2nd story. What many of you all dont understand, i pray you never do, is how HARD it is to watch someone you love actively dying. What may have come across as crass, uncaring, resentful is really a demonstration of her absolute fear. This was a different time , where women grew up, married, and had children. She couldnt accept the uncertainty of the illness or a future without the stability of a husband. I think we all at times are afraid of an uncertain future. The reverend in 3rd story is so similar to my son...They told him cancer was in liver.... and at least those docs were honest with Rev. Bryant and told him directly that there is no treatment available once it gets there... no one told me as directly as this. Im not sure it wouldve helped knowing, perhaps my child's doctors were just trying to give me something to hold onto...hope?...Hard to believe this is almost 50 years old documentary, and what a shame in that time , there havent been advancements made to help treat when its that far gone. Rest in Peace to all who have gone much too soon. Rest in Peace my sweet Cameren. Mom loves you foREVer

I think you’re wrong. Most folks want their love ones to be with them as long as possible. l know what it’s like to lose someone very dear to me. And true when the person becomes unconscious or goes into coma then maybe you hope for them to go quick. But that ladies spouse was still able to enjoy life and his children and she was pure poison, zero sense of humanity in her. She only wanted him to go quick so she could on with her life. She made her ill husband’s life horrible.

Rev bryants family was mirror image of us 7 kids losing our daddy to cancer 14 years ago, we all stayed by his bedside at home and comforted mom before and after..it was so hard losing the patriot of our family, life was never the same. Just lost mom 4 years ago and the family split up! Im wondering if these familys got closer or just couldnt deal with the loss, like my own family. If i could do it over and over Id ask god for the same parents. I miss them both. Its been hard.

This is a very old documentary and I can't imagine there was a great deal of counselling for the families or mental health services back then. We saw a psychologist speaking to the mother, but not the children. My mother had terminal cancer in 1978 and as children, I remember we never had any kind of help - physical or mental. You were just left to get on with it. The second family in the story were all in such emotional pain they took it out on each other. The oldest son was so angry, copying how his mother was treating everyone and their mother full of rage at the thought of being 'left' to bring up her sons, once her husband died. I would love to know how things worked out for them all. It was really difficult to be a fly on the wall looking at the family's emotional decline.

I lost my father to cancer in 2006 when I was 6 years old, he never wanted to leave but he knew his time was unfortunately coming up. His last words were "a lady in white is coming to take him home" and I knew at that moment he was letting us know he was okay and that he's going home to be with the Lord.
I want anyone to know who has a loved one fighting this battle with cancer is to be strong, and if it's becoming to apparent that it's coming to the end that there's more and another journey after this life, a life with the Lord and his presence is like no other for there's no pain, no suffering, only Love

I remember watching this in my psych 101 class almost 35 years ago in college. I remember feeling horrified watching the wife be so cruel and mean to her husband.
As I began watching it again i thought, “I’m in such a different place now in my life. Maybe it will make more sense to me now.”
Nope. In fact, I feel even more contempt for her. She had a good life. He provided well for her. He was the one suffering with cancer. Yet, she made it all about her.
I would have loved to have seen a follow up with her. I hope those 2 sweet boys didn’t have to suffer living with her. She needed to be seen by a psychiatrist. It’s all about her when he is the one who is dying. Terrible woman!

Even after 50 years, ( from the time this was filmed) these are impactful, emotional stories - death is something we all must face, but each individual/family deals with it differently. The first woman, stuggled to move forward, wasn't bitter, and her elderly mother caring for her was beautiful. The woman in the second story, I do believe had a psychotic break- I feel for her husband and sons - hopefully the sons were able to achieve a better life someday. In the last story, the pastor had the faith of Job- may I have just a fraction of his serenity and character when my time comes.
