Man being from the West coast growing up in the 90s, Nas was literally the very first east coast rapper I ever started listening to when I was 15yrs old & when i popped in that Illmatic cassette tape, the intro was dope AF but by the time it got to track 5 Halftime, I repeated that MF like 10 times. Thats was a special time for me

When I first heard the "If I ruled the world" in 1996. Back then we could get music after 2 months it's been released in the US here in South African. A cassette tape dof the single my homie had brought me.

First heard Nas on the barbecue. ‘ when I was twelve I went to hell for snuffing Jesus.’ Was single wildest bar in ‘91. And everyone else ( including your favorite rapper, Jay, Tupac, whoever) had to catch up.

The first time I heard Nas I said OH MY GOO! Who is this nigga! I was a late bloomer when it came to Nas and Illmatic. My brother had bought the CD when it released in April of 94. I seen it lying on a coffee table in the house but I paid it not mind. At the time I was stuck in Midnight Marauders and Enter the 36 Chambers. I took me almost a year to listen to Illmatic. I was walking to work and when I listened to it. The first song I heard was Memory Lane. I was blown when I heard the 2nd verse. I decided to remind the tape to the beginning and listened to side A of the tape. Into, then N.Y. State of Mind. The beat drops and it was crazy. I don’t know if it’s possible to boop your heard while walking but I think I managed to do it simultaneously without breaking stride in my walk. Life a Bitch comes on. AZ goes and I’m like Yoooooo! Then Nas…. Nas’s lyrics brought tears to my eyes. “I woke up early on my born day, I’m 20, it’s a blessing, the essence of adolescence leaves my body, now I’m fresh and my physical frame is celebrated cause I made it…” As a 16 year old black kid that was heavy. Because I knew guys who had died or were in prison before the age of 20. It hit home and immediately it brought me to tears. Making 21 where I’m from was a big accomplishment. Almost like graduating from high school. But making it to 21 without being incarcerated was a whole different story all together. Those bars changed my life.

"The smooth criminal on beat breaks. Never put me in yo box if the shit eats tapes" 😁😁😁
    STOP PLAYN 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

I remember when It Ain't Hard To Tell came out there were a lot of dope hip hop songs on the late night radio shows but that one just hit different. The only other Nas I'd heard was on Back To The Grill Again by MC Search. By 95/96, Biggie, Mobb Deep and Wu had kinda caught up but in late 93 and 94 absolutely nobody was fucking with him.
