Today I talk about the newest fast 50 from Voigtlander in the M mount line up and this time it is the 50 f/1 ASPH. This is a stunning lens and one I would 100% buy if I was looking for a 50mm lens today. It's manual, it's fast, it's creamy and it's a new current production lens that will cost you $10K less than a Leica Noctilux! My review is here.
You can buy this lens from CameraQuest direct from Amazon Prime: amzn.to/46A7H6I

Really missed your lens review! Glad you are back.
Hey, thanks!
I decided against the Voigtländer f/1 and went with the f/1.2 which is a bit smaller and lighter, renders the same image quality - and most importantly, the f/1.2 version allows you to focus closer by 20cm, which makes a huge difference when shooting portraits. The f/1 only focuses down to 90cm, the f/1.2 allows to get up to 70cm to your subject. This will also render the background more out of focus with more bokeh than using the f/1 at 90cm. Also, the f/1.2 is almost half the price of the f/1. Go with the f/1.2.
Can confirm what you said. I also tested both an came to the same conclusions.
What system did you buy it for? I just ordered the F/1.0 I thought the F/1.2 was for APS-C in the Nikon Z mount. 🤔
@@MB-dq2gzI got mine in M mount for my Leica M10. It adapts to Z mount easily - however without the electronic contacts Voigtländer Z mount lenses have. Not a big deal.
@@thedarkslide Got it thanks, ordered the 1.0 native Z mount. Going to try it on my Z8. Eventually I want to pair it with a blue ZF when they're in stock and solely use a compact get with that and a couple pancakes.
Nice to see you do a camera review, Steve. Although, I do enjoy your audiophile vids too!
Well, the audio reviews are much more popular but I will do these every so often. I have another Voigtlander lens I am using now ; )
Miss the lens reveiws brother
Thanks!
happy to see photographic review from you. Love them, thanks.
Super review, thanks! You should do some audiobooks with your hypnotic and calm voice!! I must flag this lens is now in Z mount as well.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing some camera gear again, hope you will show more. I have 3 Voigtländer Lenses, some of the very best Lenses you can get !
As ALWAYS …GREAT HONEST REVIEW. THANKS STEVE
Thank you!
I‘m curious if you prefer the Noct Nikkor 58 f/1.2 over this one. Can‘t decide which one. The Leica m adapter is way shorter than the nikon on the sl2-s.
I‘m also Fromm Germany. And I think with pronouncing the „i“ it sounds much better. I like it;-)
I’ve been using this lens all summer on my Sony A7CR and it’s been a blast - it’s only now beginning to get some recognition.
After being a fan of first party lenses for whatever system I was using I realized that nothing will give you the character and inspiration a nice german lens like Voigtlander, Zeiss or Leica give you.
Finally! Good Steve back! We miss you dude!
Thank you.
Chromatic aberration is easilty removed in photohop! I know because I have edited files from this lens. Stop worrying about it.
Love mine .Use mine on my 246 and my SL2s .
Your reviews are still the best in the camera world.
I love mine! Bought it for my Z9 in Z-mount, although I also use Leica.
I'm debating between M and Z mount myself.
A great review. I’ve the 50mm f1.2 which I love… I am tempted by the F1… perfect bar the size. It would be interesting if Voigtlander introduced the floating elements into a version 2 of their 50mm F1.2 to create a true Summilux killer.
Stick to F1.2. a much better lens. There are always compromises with super fast lenses, and more so with the F1, unless you dish out $10000 for a Leica for better correction and flat field.
Years ago I bought a Voigtlander 65mm F2, I think after seeing your review, for my Sony. Still keeping it and one of my favorite lenses.
I remember that review!
Love that your back to camera gear! Most passionate guy I know when it comes to reviewing cameras/ lenses.
What would you choose if you had to choose between this f1 from voigtlander or the 1.5 heliar classic? I know you love both and Im having a hard time deciding! Both different beasts but both amazing! 😂
Today I would choose the F/1 because it's so close to the Noctilux. It would be like the choice between a Noctilux and a Summilux really : ) Both are fantastic yet different.
@@HiFiHuff noted! Will definately play with both and make a decision but leaning to the F1 now! Thanks for making the choice a little easier haha.
Hi, I brought mine home, just now. Saw your YT afterward and can only confirm what you're saying (I bought the one which is natively made for Z mount, it works great with my Z8 and my Zf. :-)
Enjoy!
I bought one on launch. I have to say it doesn’t work that well pairing with my M9P, color fringing is insane on that CCD sensor. But when adapted on my Z7II and Hasselblad X2D, the performance is incredible. I would even say it is better than Noctilux 0.95 with 1/4 the price of Leica.
Awesome to hear. Thank you.
Great review, thank you! I do a lot of wildlife/sports photography with my Z8 where I need that snappy auto focus but this lens looks like exactly what I need to slow it down and try to focus (pun intended) on the artistic side of photography. I’m curious on your Z8 did you try out and see if the “focus peeking” works with this lens? I could see that being useful with using this manual focus lens. Thanks again.
A very viable alternative and probably a much better choice is the F1.2 version of this lens form Voigtlander. A lot of the ills of this lens are just not there with the F1.2, unless you absolutely need F1.0 for any particular reason.
Great review. I have a Voightlander 50mm f/2 APO, and that is a great lens. I also have their 35mm f/1.2 ASPH, which is a very nice lens, too. I adapt to a Leica SL body. Great setup. :)
What about adapting it to a GFX though?
I don’t have a gfx but it would be similar to adapting the Noct Nikor or Nodtilux. Vignetting, but fixable.
@@HiFiHuff sounds spicy!
yes but you have to shoot corp on full frame.
The vignetting on FF is already quite bad.
@4.51... is that tye field curvature? Bokeh on left side looks wierd
how's the chromatic aberration?
Heavy.
I have the Nikon ZF, they have this lens in the Z mount now. The link you provide is the for M mount, is there a difference at all?
What's your thoughts on pairing this lens on the new Hasselblad 907x cv100??
My guess is that it would be pretty cool and unique. Would probably vignette but most M lenses I have tried on the older 50c did great.
Chromatic aberration at its finest at 9:45. looks like a 90ies tamron lens. although look at the heads of this couple in this picture. holy cow.
It’s a ton sharper and better than the Leica noctilux f0.95 and f1. They don’t even come close to this lens. They are massive and soft with tons of CA.
I'm a fan of the Voigtlander line; I bought the 65mm APO for my Sony. My most stunning portraits are taken with that lens..........slowly.
That's interesting as It's often praised as a landscape lens.
Personally I think the APO is far too sharp for portraits. The level of detail and micro contrast are much better suited to landscape, street, and product photography.
You could be right; I'm a sucker for sharpness though, and I'd rather dial it down in post than up.

Yeah, Z 8 is an amazing camera. Great lens, too. But please pronounce Voigtländer without the " i ", like fogtlander. Greetings from Germany
when are you coming back to do camera/lens reviews :D
But if .... you did not have a Leica DR Summicron 50mm F2 ....would you buy this lens first ? I am looking at the 50mm DR as I have the 50mm F1.1 Voightlander already.
I like the 50mm 1.1 , but it is a different beast.
I always keep multiple 50s around, so I say go for it. For my Canons, I have both Zeiss 50 f2 and Milvus 1.4.
I have a 50 Lux and don’t love it on my M10r. So I bought a VM Apo Lanthar 50 and it rocks. I’m using the lux on a M10m now, and considering this as well.
