How do you say "half" & "the second half" in Mandarin

I have recently found that "one half" can also be expressed as 二分之一. I don't know how this compares with 半. Perhaps when contrasting the half with the whole. For example:
"The room is divided into two parts. One half is empty, and the other half is full of furniture."
房间分为两部分。 二分之一是空的，另外二分之一装满了家具。
