Thanks for the video. Air went out at 1am and on the hottest day over 100 degrees and 93 at night. Everyone else said had to have duel capacitors to use 4 wire configuration and I saw your video and thats what I thought but wanted to be sure about the 2 brown wires. Had a used newer motor with the 4 wires and it works great and now have air back up at 3:45 am. Such a blessing. Your video saved me.

You saved my hide friend! My new motor came in today. Naturally it wasn't a one for one swap. The mounts were all wrong and not enough wires. Your wiring explanation gave me confidence that it was worth overcoming the mounting. I didn't want to explain to my employer that I had just wasted $270 bucks on the wrong part. Thank you!

Thank you for the video. I replaced my fan motor following your recommendations. My fan was going bad and I noticed the fan was previously replaced with a 4 wire instead of a 3 wire motor. The installer jury rig the wires using a secondary capacitor. Needless to say I replaced and put all the wires back to spec for a carrier 3 ton single speed motor and it is now working quieter and smoother for a 13 year old unit. Thanks again for taking the time and teaching us on how to do maintenance on our units.

My AC fan didn't spin at all so I called a technician to check out what is wrong, one of the guys says it would be $800 because of replacing a motor, and the other guy says $ 2600 for replacing the compressor so I don't know what to do so I started to watch this guy's videos and I did replace a capacitor ($12 at Amazon) and the fan is started working with cold air.tks.

Excellent explanation for going from a 3 wire fan motor to a 4 wire. Very helpful. Your vids are always extremely informative and done in such a way as to be easily understandable. One question you may be able to answer, I've been advised that a fan motor may have a plastic or rubber "plug" in the bottom when mounted to facilitate water drainage. Is this statement true or false? Thanks in advance for your answer.

    • @WordofAdviceTV

Glad the video helped! Yes, the green wire is a ground. Usually that wire can simply go under one of the bolts/nuts that secure the motor to the shroud/cover.

Brown and white, brown, yellow and black my new fan motor has brown, red and black I know the brown goes to the fan on the compacitor and the black goes to the contactor but does the red go to the common on the capacitor or does it go to the opposite side of the contactor? Nice video! Btw, can't you just replace the 3 wire motor with a 4 wire motor WITH a separate fan capacitor? Then just put in a jumper between the C (common) on the dual run capacitor and one of the connections on the fan capacitor?

Yes, that would work too. The fun thing about HVAC is that there is usually always more than one way to do things :D The two ways I go over in the video are the most common ways though. Thank you for mentioning that though! For the people for whom it would be easier to do it that way.

I have a 3 wire condenser fan motor that is blowing air down instead of up. It has a duel capacitor the brown goes to the capacitor and the other two go to opposite sides of the contact. Can I reverse the direction of the fan motor by swapping the two wires at the contact? The motor is a 1/8 hp 1075 RPM and it states ROT CCLWE. I'm assuming this motor is only counter clockwise? Can I reverse the direction?

Hi! Thank you for your videos, they're super helpful. I've been replacing my AC fan motor and I'm down to one last step - for some reason my replacement motor came with yellow, brown and black wires but the original had purple, brown and black. Is it possible that the yellow wire on the new motor will work in place of the purple? Any advice or help you could offer? I really appreciate it!

Thanks you very helpful ....My case was the 4 wires with a 3 wires condenser. Bu my question now is, the original motor was a 1/5 hp and they give me a 1/4 hp motor replacement. Does the capacitor will work the same? What can I do?

My old condenser fan motor is 1100rpm, 1/4HP and 1.3amps
The only replacement I'm finding is 1075rpm, 1/4HP and 1.6 amps.
Is this likely to work without any problems? Thanks.

Can you also put the common wire to the capacitor? I’ve seen some capacitors having two wires on C?
