- Converting to the Catholic Church is not easy; it’s extremely difficult and has been even traumatic for some. I have experienced, and continue to experience, vehement backlash for wanting to convert to Catholicism and for striving to be a pious Catholic. This video was created to give you real-life experiences and examples of what kinds of personal losses and costs you will most likely experience converting to Catholicism.
Interesting topic. After listening to your experience I tend to believe it's not at all uncommon among those who take their faith seriously regardless of whether one is Catholic or Protestant. As I'm sure you know, Jesus warned us of that reality in the New Testament. It's simply the part of the cost of discipleship. That we would lose non-believing friends or family members due to our faith is to be expected.
I was raised Roman Catholic. I attended Catholic schools for a few years and was also confirmed. When I become a Protestant, eventually converting to Lutheranism, my Catholic family was generally supportive. They respected my choice just as I respected theirs. I cannot recall a single argument over my religious views or theirs. Friendly exchanges, yes; arguments, no.
To me it all boils down to respect. Let me share an example: when my grandmother died my dad informed me that our family would be holding a rosary service at the funeral home chapel. My dad gently let me know that the family was understanding that I would not attend. To the contrary, I informed him it was my intention to attend and I would join them in the prayers that we held in common even though in good conscience I could not pray most of the rosery. My family respected my views in this situation and I certainly respected theirs. I sincerly believe that we can practice mutual respect for one another without compromising our deeply held beliefs.

When a non-Catholic converts to Catholicism, family and friends generally tend to hate or disdain you. You don't find much of this behavior the other way around; only acceptance and pity.
