I just wonder how many more great songs we missed out on because we lost this artist way too soon😢 RIP Jim Croce.

Jim Croce had a terribly one-sided recording contract so he never really made much money from his catalog (there’s a great video on TH-cam about his life, go watch it), so he had decided to quit touring and recording just prior to his tragic death. Who knows if he would have ever returned to music. It wasn’t until many years later that is wife Ingrid was able to wrest control of his music and publishing from the label. He’s been one of my favorite singer-songwriters since childhood and I’ll listen to his music until the day I die.

I cried when he died. I was in my 20s. He was just becoming known. He was a young father with a great life ahead. His death was a tragedy.

Jim Croce died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana, September 29, 1973. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" hit #9 in the US posthumously in 1974.
Croce wrote the song in early 1973 when he arrived home and got into a disagreement with his wife, Ingrid. Instead of arguing with her, she has stated that Croce "went downstairs, and he started to play like he always did when he wrote ... the next morning, he came up early in the morning and sang it to me."

I was pre-teen and remember my older sister bringing home all these great albums. She'd banish me and my little sister to our room while she and her friends would hang out and play them. She passed in 2010. When I hear them now it's on a much deeper level. Those were the BEST times EVER. 😌🎶

I still remember the day his plane crashed. It was an Indian summer day towards the end of September in 73, I was 8 years old and hanging on the beach with my folks and some friends when it came over the radio. I looked up to see a number of people sitting on their blankets crying. Kinda put a damper on the day.
What tremendous loss to the music world and such a shame when talented people like him get taken from us so young.
It's just amazing that he only released 2 albums and still had enough popular songs to fill a greatest hits album, he kinda reminds me of Randy Rhoads in that aspect.
He was a lyrical genius, a guitar virtuoso, and he is sorely missed.
I'd love to see you guys do some of the songs most reactors don't do like........

A great example of how to build a song from a simple start and onward toward a full but tasteful ending with subtle strings and vocal backing. And IMO the comparative brevity of it just makes you want to hear it again. A very different approach to a lot of modern productions where an equivalently brief song is padded out to five or six minutes with effects and endless repeats.

He was just SO great. A true singer, songwriter, and poet. He was killed on my 8th birthday in Natchitoches, LA. He had just played a show at NSU and was going to fly home. The plane clipped some pecan trees at the end of the runway. An older friend of mine was a student and had talked to him right before he got on the plane.

Wow. I’m trying to find the words to describe what I’m feeling after reading your post. Kind of ironic, given the lyrics to this song. Most of us were shocked and saddened by his untimely death but it seems to have hit closer to home for you in two ways. As for your friend . . . again, wow. To have looked him in the eye and talked to him must have been such a thrill. I imagine the news of his death (if not the sound of the crash, if your friend was at the airport) was both surreal and gut wrenching. And yet they got to talk to him - an opportunity they would never have had again. That’s a lot to process. Thanks for sharing.

In a documentary I watched, his wife said he wasn't very good at expressing himself, especially when there was confrontation. So, he wrote this song to express how he felt and sang it to and for her. That confrontation was her asking him to be on the road less and focusing on them more. He had just decided to back off the music biz and return home to do just that when his plane crashed and killed him. Even decades later, you could hear the sadness and even bitterness in her voice when she spoke about it. If only he would have stopped when she asked and not gone out for a few more gigs, he may still be with us. So sad.

The story behind the song is Jim and Ingrid were arguing over his lack of money. He was becoming a star and they still had no money. She went off to bed and shortly before dawn, Jim walked into their bedroom singing this song. He stayed up throughout the night to write it. She said “How can I stay mad at someone who does this for you?”
They had no money because he had signed a bad contract and was taken advantage of.
