I got my masters in Creative writing. They teach you that there are six script archetypes that you will have to write. The one Pyrion is talking about is often called "Retired Hero". It's probably the fourth or fifth most popular. The number one being "Christmas Animal".

Well, in Unforgiven, at no point did William Munny (Clint Eastwood's character) beat anyone up physically. He was notoriously a cold, level-headed gunfighter/murderer, and Little Bill had even explained to the writer that the ability to not panic in a gunfight was key. I do agree that the other movies and characters Pflax mentioned are pretty ridiculous, but Unforgiven, in my opinion, is not one of those movies.

Them ranting about how sharper knives are more dangerous is nothing but a skill issue. If you know how to use a knife properly a sharper knife just is safer not to mention the benefits a sharp utensil brings in cooking. Them getting mad and being wrong was genuinely ridiculously funny

You can't claim it's safer if most people don't know how to use a knife properly. The phrase people wheel out isn't "better cutting technique is safer" and most people haven't learnt how to use one.

  • @HYPERPEACE

I sliced diagonally into my finger once when peeling a sweet potato, literally nightmare fuel. Since then, I've never really taken the risk of cutting. My philosophy with cutting is "If it's a risk, it's not worth taking." So I just gut with one hand now and never peel.

Pyrion is very right about Bezos. I recently got a job where the company feels like they need to kiss my ass a bit, and immediately I've stopped having to pay for many things. And I'm not even one of the really pampered ones. Someone like Bezos don't even have a credit card, let alone any cash. He's not going to stores for anything. While I'm being given stuff like cellphones, billionaires are given Ferraris. That's because it looks good for a company if someone like Bezos owns or use their products. It's basically the billion dollar version of youtubers being given products to review. So Bezos isn't even paying his own cars. And he's definitely not going down to the local shop to buy an ice cream. One reason is that he's miles away from any common population, and therefore any shop. And the other reason is that his kitchen staff makes the ice cream from scratch, using select ingredients that are too expensive to be found in any shop. You don't even have to be a billionaire to be this removed from normal life. If you've grown up in a family who owns a couple hundred millions, you've never even been inside a store.

I always have a knife with me. I have for most of my life. Sure, it makes for a decent self defense weapon if it comes down to it or survival tool if necessary, but those kind of events are few and far between. I do use my knife all the time in day to day life usually for opening things or working on little tasks, and yes, sometimes for snacks. People regularly call me by name and ask me for my knife because they dont have one and they know I always do.
On a separate note, for Flax, the "nobody should have weapons" would be ideal but is simply not plausible because the bad guys dont care and will get weapons anyway. The next best option is for EVERYONE to have a weapon, and have respect and education on their weapon, so that when a bad guy has a weapon everyone else there can quickly stop them.

But seriously, in the USA at least, roughly ~43,000 people died to guns in 2023. About 24,000 of those were suicide, so if they didn't use a gun, they'd likely have used something else unfortunately. The remaining ~19,000 were homicide. That's horrible. But annually the USA, people use guns between 1,500,000 and 2,000,000 times legally and defensively to protect themselves, someone else, or property. That's a massive difference! And if everyone had a gun and knew how to handle them, then yes, the average citizen would be able to stop a mass shooter much more quickly than if they ran away or hid while waiting 10+ minutes for the cops to arrive.
