- One of the most popular features in Evernote is the ability to create tags inside of notes. They allow you to quickly find things that have something in common. But, there is a problem that if you use tags incorrectly it can complicate your system.

Dave, Thanks for another video that discusses "organizing Evernote so it works best for you".
I view the use of tags differently. I don't see that having far more than 1,000 tags makes the system inefficient. Depending on how you use Evernote, you don't have to remember all or even most of your tags. When you want to use a tag, you can easily search to see if you have used that tag. Think of a tag like a virtual notebook or a virtual folder. By using tags, a note can be included in multiple virtual notebooks, without being physically duplicated. Having over 1,000 virtual notebooks is not a problem.
When creating or editing a note, if there are terms in the note that might later help you find the note (and other notes with those terms), then use a tag. For example, I used the tags "Evernote" and "tags" for the note I created when viewing your video.
I agree that it might work better if your tags are unique, especially if you choose to limit the number of tags you use. As in your example, it could be confusing if you used both an "expense" tag and an "expense report" tag. If you don't limit the number of tags you use, then don't worry about non-unique tags. With Evernote's great search functionality, there are many ways to find what you're looking for. If you later find that some tags that you've used are confusing, you can change them then.
The power of Evernote is that you can organize your notes any way you want - whatever works best for you.
Good points!

Gene, I am in full agreement with you. A note may reside in only one notebook but can live in any number of tags, and that is the strength of tags for me, and like you I try to limit the number of tags I have in the system.
@@victorlloyd5271 It's a fine balance between the right number of tags and too many to remember. Thanks for watching the video. Please consider subscribing.

Great video Dave! I do have a question about the use of Tags vs Notebooks in the Evernote Mobile app. Which method do you feel is easier to use, both visually and functionally, Tags or Notebooks? Keep the great content coming!
Kevin - I favor notebooks. I use tags sparingly. I demonstrate my entire system in my course "Evernote for Beginners." You may want to check it out dedwards-school-d882.thinkific.com/courses/evernote-course

well this was fun! i was spending too much time organizing notes into the appropriate notebook... then organizing the notebooks into stacks of notebooks? i luv the idea of TAG's ,,, I mean I dont really CARE which notebook my note lives in? i jst want to find stuff in a hurry :)
I can't remember over 1000 tags, per se, but my memory can be jogged for each tag if I'm thinking about something, or working on something. I don't think using over 1000 tags is getting carried away. It just depends on what you're doing. If you have a job that's the same thing day in and day out, and that's basically all you're doing with it, you might not need many tags. But if you're working on something that's amorphous and doesn't have a clear vision--something you're developing--like a novel, an album, a movie, a screenplay, etc., then using over 1000 tags may be the best thing to do. I have over 600 tags and I've never had trouble finding anything. There've been maybe a couple times when I took 5 minutes or more to find something in 2 years of using it.
Sounds like you have developed a system that works well for you. Congratulations
How do I send an email to a tag in evernote?

I have tags for everything. It's not efficient because I don't know how to search with tags, or multiple tags, or excluding tags. When you say to have a system for tagging, what do you mean? What kind of system? If you have another video on that can you send me a link? Thanks Dave!
Janet - Let me add your idea to my production schedule. While my system may not work for everyone, I'd be happy to share. Stay tuned and please subscribe

@@daveedwardsmedia Thank you!
You say about 7 minutes in by removing the tag filter, you remove the tag from the note. that's not right Dave. Evernote has the functionality of allowing you to filter your notes by tag and will suggest other tags for you to filter on. you are not deleting the tag from the note, you are simply removing the filter. the tag still exists on your note. to remove the tag, you can do that from tags, or within the note itself. you might want to have a look at Evernote's help tutorials, they're quite good
The problem with Evernote is that when I look in a notebook I still see all the tags I have. When I should see only the tags that relate to notes in that notebook then things would be easier to find using tags
I appreciate your feedback.
