It's not just "80's Nostalgia" comics. Hollywood and Netflix no longer drive culture like they used to. Nearly all prices on slabbed books are inflated, that includes superhero comics. The true keys will retain their value, but most books people say are "keys," really aren't.
I own a vintage toy store and they have dropped a ton from the boom but they are still way higher than they were before. Interestingly they are more in demand than ever locally, 5 years ago only the hardest core fans wanted them. The trick with most of these titles is the number 1s aren't where it's at, it's the last issue or two that command the most money. The print runs were very low compared to the early books of the line, especially books like GI Joe and Transformers. People also seem to collect them differently than the comic crowd with keys, it's more storyline based. TMNT Archies and Sonic the Hedgehog Archies are a good example of people loving to collect different storylines, can't keep old Sonic books in stock!
Its funny you did this video as i just finished my collection of these in a CGC 9.8. Transformers 1, thundercats 1, M.A.S.K 1, Centurions 1, Sectaurs 1, Dino Riders 1, Visionaries 1. Will never sell them as i love them. Big lesson to buy what you love. Great video.

GREAT content! Thank you for all that research... very thorough and informative - I was a little too old to experience these shows and toys, so I learned a lot! Observations on the graphs, firstly, as you've pointed out before, almost all of these comics have dropped to their pre-boom levels, but another thing... looking at the early parts of the graphs, most hadn't gone up much in value in the 20+ years prior to the boom. The graded 9.8's prices have slabbing costs and 9.8 collectors propping them up, but Near Mint raw ones can be had for $5 to $10. And, that's just the #1's - where spec is the greatest, and people who paid higher numbers and those who sitting on copies they got from 50 cents / dollar bins, or when they were kids, are holding onto them, hoping that they'll go up again. But those forces can only hold back the tide of lower prices for so long - at some point these people will age out or give up, and with no new buyers, prices aren't in equilibrium with demand yet. Most other issues in these titles are dollar-bin / unsaleable books at this point. Prior to about 1990, "serious" collectors frowned upon comics that were derivative of toy lines. Not saying that was fair or right, but that's the way it was. Maybe that's where this is headed?

I remember all my 5th grade classmate could not wait to get home to watch GI Joe. One of the other commenters mentioned Centurions. I remember buying the first comic issue of that right before I started to outgrow toys. I loved the comics that came with He Man. I also collected Superpowers from DC and they had Kirby drawn comics on the newsstands but also came with minicomics with each toy. The only toy you mentioned that I never heard of for some reason was Silverhawks for some reason. Also I don't want to spoil anything but you mentioned how this shared universe from Hasbro may not be happening. But a coworker of mine saw the latest Transformers and said the ending ties in another major toy property. If so that would be cool.
I own the entire First series of Marvel’s Transformers comics, including the Transformers VS Gi Joe limited series, The GI Joe Order of Battle Limited series and almost the entire First run of the Marvel GI Joe series and I would not trade or sell them for anything. My son can do what he desires after I’m gone. I even have the issue where they list John Rambo as a member AND its retraction stating he was never a member.
Like any investment category, an overheated comics market needed to go through a correction. Speculators were making the same mistakes from the 90s and now the industry is leveling out. It's just not 80s nostalgia comics - superhero comics, golden age westerns, silver age books...anything related to movie options is dropping back to pre-pandemic prices. Especially with movie/TV-optioned comics, the sudden value uptick is gone because people have lost trust in Hollywood to make the concept a hit franchise. Look at Something is Killing the Children or Wytches - both are guaranteed shows, yet their comic prices have stagnated or even dropped. Ultimately, for the health of the industry, I think this is a good thing! A good reset with help the industry going forward
They tried that with the Comics Crash of 1996. The problem is that no one to this day acknowledges the causes to why it happened and how it happened. If the industry "resets" I guarantee that Marvel and DC will die out, and I do not mean this in a good way. The major problem is that no one sees or takes comic book authoring seriously, and neither do its writers. Thus, the collectors come in and gamble its properties and grave rob older esteemed titles. Everyone's blamed anime and other stuff, but the matter of the fact is that the US comics industry has been cowardly and galless in the face of its oppressors and detractors. It has been its own enemy since the days of the Tijuana Bible and the Comics purges of the 1950s. Until these things are rectified, it's going to live off of movies forever. And if it dies, it dies for good. Beware of what you wish for.
I hate how we always compare prices to the 2021 COVID stimulus to where all of the sudden everyone had access to thousands of dollars that they never accounted for. Most people put this money into interest. So this inflated severely anything collectible's value and shouldn't be considered as it will likely never happen again. In short it is artificial value.
Sigh. It wasn't the stimulus money. It was bored and nostalgic Baby Boomers stuck at home who already had plenty of cash to spend and nowhere to spend it.
Oh my. 'Shogun Warriors' isn't a term I heard since about 40 some odd years ago. I remember the time as a boy. I didn't really want them for Christmas. I wanted Kenner Star wars stuff. However it's interesting to note something in relation to the Shogun Warriar craze. There were all these interesting knockoffs as well. Many made with real metal. Some really unique toys trying to market their stuff. Kids were really digging it. I totally forgot about some of these that I owned as a kid.
2021 was so wild though, its hard to compare anything to the covid years. Everything was different. I don't think there will be anytime soon where things were like they were at that time. I think we should try to move past seeing comics as a drop from those years, and instead look at the time before and after the "boom".

I know a lot of people call it a crash, I've called it a leveling out and return to normal. The craze that began around movie speculation, Covid lockdown buying, and general run-and-grab mentality was doomed to come down. I don't want to see comics shoot up in value by huge numbers every month or even every year. I want to see a solid, steady climb in value each year that is sustainable over time.
It was actually a brilliant idea in the 80s. Create the toys, make a cartoon specifically designed to compliment the toys and you generate tons of sales. They got the idea after seeing how star wars toys flew off the shelves. Unfortunately today it's diminishing returns. A over abundance of movies and shows have killed it. But hey we have the memories of the good old days.
Most of the 80's toys came with comics because the FCC just had a decade old ruling overturned not allowing "30 minute advertisements" for toys. Cartoons based on toys were allowed again however fearing new regulations being created toy companies started including comics. Which they could use to argue that the shows are based on the comics (literature) not the toys.
Ive been thinking of selling ALL my floppies from back in the day of Batman...Spiderman..etc. Why??? Because I enjoy Omnibuses way more than flipping and opening old issues in which the paper quality has aged and art is usually dark if its an bronze age comic. An example is ROM mentioned in this video. They just releaaed a complete comic collection in Omnibus format! Bright brand new pages and coloring! Micronauts is also coming out soon as a complete omnibus collectiom!

I just got me a battlestar galactica #1 Cgc 9.8 newsie for $120. I’m good with it. Not looking for a series or movie. Just enjoying what I watched as a kid.
These stats are wild! 9.8s are considered "investment grade" but are down more than 9.6 or 9.4 in general. And 9.4s are barely over the cost of grading now. Wow

When you look at the “trend line” in most all of these however they seem to be in line to where they “should have been” had the market not gone all crazy in 2021-22… Some of these are undervalued (over corrected) perhaps but imo a Transformers #1 should never cost as much as a high grade silver key… $1.3k is still a respectable amount of money for a book that has 660 Universal 9.8’s.
Now is the time to buy buy buy perhaps. Prices will drop out of necessity and if you are young enough to sit on something for 15 to 20 years you will have something WELL worth your effort. Me I could care less about the investment. But the thought of just getting our hands on so many of these items is exciting enough. For me its about comics. I hate what I see going down but people who have an appreciation for these items need to somehow ensure they fall into the right hands. There is a storm on the way. Escapism is fun but there are limits to how deep in the hole we should stick our heads. Wake up. Act accordingly and look down the road a bit for brighter days. They simply are not here at the moment.

M.A.S.K. toys too, from what I recall, had really solid & unique construction attributes. . .felt pliable but also indestructible lol
I think many of these comics don't feel as important as they actually are. Its very hard to push each IP to the next generation. That's what makes Ninja Turtles and Star wars so impressive. Transformers and Power rangers seem to be underperforming.

I never understood transformers. The characters and story was just... lame. I liked Macross/Robotech but that was less a 'transforming' gimmick and more of a space opera (literally in some episodes).

This is why I sold my TMNt #1 1st print 9.6 and my full run of Gi joe in Canadian price variant last year I had a feeling this was coming.

I never understood transformers. The characters and story was just... lame. I liked Macross/Robotech but that was less a 'transforming' gimmick and more of a space opera (literally in some episodes).
Transformers is very popular in Asia that's why. The movies are made for China, not Americans.
