    Thanks for this video! It brought back memories!
    That magnalium crushing sound... So beatiful! I used to do it using the same water method I learned from Passfire. It was 8 years ago. When the magnalium bubble ignited, one had to sink it deep into the water to.. extinguish it.
    Finally it formed these pop-corns which were so easy to crush by hand.
    I used it mostly for stars. Despite having (carefully) ballmilled it to a dark level, flash powder with it was too scary, so I abandoned the idea.

    It's amazing how quickly magnesium can oxidize, aluminum is a bit more stable, but it too can burn out of control.
    Very cool video, nice setup there for sure.

      Full Modern Alchemist welding suppliers provide the best, you can get mixes depending on your needs eg co2/argon. I used a tig gas mix when I made some. CO2 + Argon, it worked well for me, but I do have a muffle furnace which allows me to purge.

    • @FullModernAlchemist
      @FullModernAlchemist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shona O'Neill I have no furnace lol. I have been using a dry stacked set of bricks and a turkey fryer burner with a high pressure regulator for my metal melting needs. Works great for aluminum but anything more reactive wouldn’t be possible.

    I Believe that a mixture of Water + Calcium nitrate and Magnalium is a powerful thermobaric Explosive . But i Prefer a mixture of Calcium nitrate Anhydrous with Magnalium ( 6/4) and 25% EGDN extra , is the must louder ( Noisy ) Explosive i already tested .... What is fot you the morr louder Explosive mix ??? Very cool !

    I give you like for effort and equipment.But you lose to many alloy it actually get burned because you didnt stop oxigen to molten alloy.Next time add powder charcoal over molten alloy.Cover it arround two inch thick and leave it to cool down at air.Do not cool down in water !!!Thats insane! I do that process so many times and have perfect britle shiny blocks

      The Crazy chemist You welcome.If you want make it at home find pure aluminum soft pipe or plate,weight 50gr Al and 50gr magnesium.Torch it in some metal jar with butan or use bbq charcoal and blow air with hair dryier,700selsius needed.First add Al than in molten Al put Mg parts.When it cool down brake it small as you can and put in coffe grinder.Dont worry it wont explode or catch fire.It make airfloat powder usually in one minute because 50/50 alloy is very brittle .Do not breath dust.Mg can be optained if you buy Mg anode for hot water boiler in bathroom.

    depending on the mix it is generally cheaper to buy magnalium then magnesium.
    so if you took a strong magnet over the magnalium it should leave all the magnesium since it cant be picked up via magnet.

    You can mill this in a ballmill with a dash of alcohol to ultra fine powder

    • @FlyinZX10R
      @FlyinZX10R ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the alcohol to keep it from exploding while still being easy to evaporate off afterwards?

    • @JeffreyCC
      @JeffreyCC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FlyinZX10R That is the theory, indeed. Fine metal particles are prone to self-ignite due to sudden exposure to oxigen from the air. A dash of solvent that evaporates quick should deal with it, although I am not familiar with ballmilling emulsions.

    • @FlyinZX10R
      @FlyinZX10R ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffreyCC my tumbler has a clear transparent plastic 11 pound drum. I read that alcohol isn’t good for the plastic. Could I just use water or something else when milling metals? I read aluminum can react to water, but that’s probably under certain circumstances. Wasn’t sure if it might ignite when I set the aluminum out to evaporate the water. I use a timer and only mill for an hour a couple times a day and I open it in between sessions. It takes awhile but it gives me something to do :)

    • @JeffreyCC
      @JeffreyCC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FlyinZX10R Aluminium reacts with water to produce Hydrogen gas and Aluminium oxide. You should look for a volatile solvent that won't react with your container or the content in it. Maybe gasoline or some of its components.

    Any way you could use nitrogen gas to keep the furnace environment inert?
    And how much of an issue would nitrogen reacting with the magnesium be an issue during smelting, and turning this into a powder?

      Just put charcoal powder on top that’s enough

  • @DavidD-ue5ft
    @DavidD-ue5ft 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would think ball milling it would be a less daunting task of getting it down to a fine powder. Also would have added a tab bit of charcoal powder to the mix for burning. It would aid in the ignition of it.

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David D you don’t want to ball mill Magnesium or this stuff. It’s a bad idea.
      Extreme fire hazard upon opening the mill. Practically explosives.
      Plus it’s very soft so easily crushed by hand and much faster.

    • @DavidD-ue5ft

      @@AllChemystery Ball milling just the Magnesium with Opening the jar every few hours will allow the oxygen levels to stabilize, so that you are not depleting it for the entire run of the milling process. Would never mill the complete composition. What about the addition of a small amount of charcoal?

    • @AllChemystery
      @AllChemystery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David D for magnesium stearin is needed. It’s just a bad idea due to the extreme flammability of it. But it can be done. There’s several reports of accidents, fires and blindings from milling magnesium in that way and I just wouldn’t risk going any finer than 400 mesh.
