I understand the sentiment and this is something I’ve been wrestling with/still figuring out as well, and I can recognize a feeling of incongruity with the content and an advertisement of any matter. The thing is that I have put nearly 100 videos out in the past year, and only 5 have contained an ad to date. Considering I spend close to 10 hours on the production of each video (and normally I release two videos per week), I need to be compensated to some degree in order to be able to carve out that much time from my schedule each week to do these regularly. I love making these videos and I want to make it work and not taint the content in any way, so I hear you and know I’m actively thinking of how to best address these concerns. I guess I’ll put this to you as well. As a long time viewer who doesn’t want to see ads paired with this content, would you be interested in supporting the channel in other ways (like a Patreon or TH-cam memberships option)? I’m likely going to be making a video on this topic shortly to put this question out to the broader community, because I’d like to hear the thoughts on this. Thanks for the comment, I really do appreciate the feedback!
Hey man, just wanted to let you know that I resonate with almost everything you say. You really feel like a kindred spirit. I yearn for the technology of ~20 years ago. Some things I've done: -I still have a smartphone, but about a year ago I removed all maps and navigation devices off it so I have to either use an old Garmin GPS or a physical map I keep in my car. I love not having apple/google maps on my phone. -I also use a physical dictionary from 2000, mainly because the internet's definition of several key words has changed in an effort to change public perception of the words. -No smart watches. Basic digital wristwatch and no bluetooth headphones. -Using cash whenever possible. -While I have streaming services, I can't bear to part with my Bluray player. -Zero social media (other than youtube). I'm curious to know what you do for taking pictures when out and about. Thanks!
Depending on your budget and photo knowledge, you could get yourself a nice digital point and shoot, or one micro four thirds with interchangeable lenses. Or, if the budget allows, i'd recommend a fuji. Then, try to figure out a system that doesn't make you sit down on a computer for too long. This will depend on WHY you want to take photos, WHAT you want to take photos of, and what are you taking photos FOR. A good start could be this one: 1. Shoot in jpeg (i am a photographer and this is the opposite of what one should actually do, but there advantages to it if you're a hobbyist) 2. Make sure that you shoot with intention and clarity. Try your best to make the picture to your liking directly on camera. The frame, the colors, the exposure, etc. Don't think "ill edit and improve it in the computer / phone app" etc. 3. Every now and then, maybe on sundays, maybe once a month, connect an external hard drive to your computer and back the photos up. I recommend organizing them in folders by date. A folder for the year, and 12 folders inside it for the months. 4. Maybe choose your few favs and post'em to a social media page or take them to be printed. And then, get off the computer and keep doing other non-screen activity.
Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your processes and experience! It sounds like you’ve done some great work disconnecting from distracting devices. For photos I will use the camera on my flip phone, or sometimes I’ll bring my camera I use to shoot the channel and I’ll take photos with that. I also use a smartphone for work still, so when I’m on a job I will use it to take photos. Hope that helps, and keep up the good work :)
Thank you for making these videos, you have taught me so much and I will continue to watch and learn from you. I am 16 and find my self taking everything for granted and I want the low tech life and you have opened my eyes to so much
A comment like this makes it all worth it :) thank you very much for the kind words. You’ve got a lot of time to learn and grow so don’t be hard on yourself and keep up the good work!
Ah, I like your main point of keeping focus. My reason for using a dictionary is to learn and retain the words. If I use google I might have a momentary understanding but no retention. When I look up words I highlight them, it's made an ongoing record in my dictionary. If a new word is in a book I plan on keeping, I write the definition next to where it's found. If I come across a word in the wild I make a journal entry with it, its definition, and the source/example. Side quest inspired by you - first and last hours tech free. 🖖
i have an electronic dictionary that i bought way back in 2010, i have forgotten about it for a long time but recently i have been using it a lot. Im glad i bought it.
Thank you for this video. I have been collecting used books for about four years now but haven't got around to reading them all. This video inspires me and reminds me to start reading my books again instead of going to Kindle or online book shopping. Thanks!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I have a good size book collection too, and I find that I need to be pretty on top of it to not let it overflow lol. Little Free Libraries in my neighbourhood or the main culprit but also my most used way of donating books too. Keep reading and thanks for the comment :)
It was your original video on using a dictionary that really kicked off my journey of disconnecting and using my smartphone less and getting a dictionary. As a matter of fact, I used it just the other day when I was doing my morning pages and couldn't remember how to spell camaraderie. And I unfortunately have the same problem with a basic dictionary. I need to keep on the lookout at my local thrift stores for a more complete dictionary.
Definitely love this thought process. I rarely use a dictionary/look up word meanings, even when reading, but it's a good habit to have! I'm pretty sure that's what they call an active reader. I just tend to infer the words, and hope I understood right xD
I need you experienced thought Taking accountability for everything has transformed my life. To achieve more specific outcomes, I’ve created goals and systems beyond my existing responsibilities. However, I’m currently facing two main scenarios: First person: He is traveling from China to India on a long flight, approximately 5 hours. During the flight, he spends 3 to 3.5 hours on his smartphone, reading books and watching videos, all with the goal of growing his business (everything is productive). Second person: He is also traveling from China to India on the same 5-hour flight. However, instead of relying heavily on his smartphone, he spends his time reading physical books, using a Kindle, and listening to content on his iPod. He only spends 1.5 hours on his smartphone, ensuring all his activities remain productive.🙂 which person you are and you want to be ?
great video! i love hearing a word i don’t know because i get to look it up and try to add it to my vocab. like other commentors have experienced, doing a quick google search rarely allows me to retain it, even after reading it and going “oooh good word!” lmao. i’m def gonna look into a pocket dictionary. love your content! thanks dude!!
Here's what I think of everyone's over-dependence on their smartphones: "It's all BS, and it's bad for ya." - George Carlin, 2008 Edit: This quote perfectly describes my thoughts on smartphones.
I have been thinking about grabbing a dictionary from the second hand bookshop when I next go to drop some books off, I constantly ask my partner what words mean when we’re reading before bed. But I reckon if I keep a dictionary close and highlight all the words I learn, I’ll remember more (and bonus I can flick through and see my vocab grow)
Love your stuff Spencer, but just wanted to say that sponsor ads in videos about frugality and conscious living rub me the wrong way.

Agreed about retention, and I love your strategy of writing the definition out in the book! Great idea

Good to hear you do morning pages too! The Artists Way is a favourite of mine. Hope you find that dictionary soon Jonathan!
I love the feel of paper. It's also better for my eyes☺️

Never heard the term active reader, thanks for sharing!

@jacobs-well-again that’s a great point! lots of benefits to using a paper dictionary!
This is a great reason too - I’m sure I retain the word better when I look it up in the dictionary. Thanks for the comment!

To add, we don’t keep our phones in the bedroom, so that’s why I ask her (plus she’s a bookworm so she legit knows 99% of the words I ask her)
The “phone a friend” method as you’ve outlined is another great way to go for sure!
Great video 🎉
Thanks buddy!
