- This video is part of a "Gold Mining and Mineral Prospecting" course. In this video I explain the terminology around classifiers and mesh sizes. Both as it relates to gold panning and also other gold mining equipment.
Again Dan, you gave me a valuable lesson on the different sizes of mesh for the classifiers! After watching your class room instructions I feel like Iam back in school after 40 years! Thank you Mr.Hurd
I watch a lot of videos where people talk about classifying and mesh size but this is the most informative and the clearest explanation I have found , greatly appreciate you breaking it down like this , now I totally understand and can choose a better classifying method to get down as close as I can to finish product... thank tou so much for the dedication to teaching , be it in the classroom or out you have taught more people than you can truly imagine

I agree,,, I went "tech"... I just .... "like computers",,, but I have always LOVED rocks. Dan is making me rethink my life.

I do want to start with you're a good teacher Dan .I made a classifier out of stucco wire and it's about 3/8 mesh not quite half inch and bigger than a quarter. After that I use a grease strainer and that's pretty small not sure how big but works really well at getting super fine gold
Your right I was using a 1/2 classifier here where I’m from in Alabama don’t need it from now on 1/4 classifier is good no big nuggets here. I’m 71 just got into gold prospecting and love it

The mesh designation makes more sense, if you notice all the things that screening is used for. Window screens are generally 100 mesh, IF I recall correctly. Mosquito netting is a certain mesh size. I used to work for a company, that produced a lot of filters for the aircraft industry. There, we used metal mesh, however. 1000 mesh metal meshing is very heavy, and has extremely fine holes.
Typically window screen mesh is 20/20. I use to build pool screen enclosures in Florida and they typical screen size on them is 18/14.
@@davemacgyver573 , thanks for correcting me. The screening that I was involved with was metal screening, that was used to make filters, often for the aircraft industry.

If you could only take 3 classifiers down to the river for panning, what sizes what you take? Generally speaking. 1/2, 1/4, 1/8? Or in mesh measurements as I just learned today, 2 mesh, 4 mesh, and 8 mesh?

Also, what brand of classifier is your go to? Does it matter the size of the pan ? I've seen 6" pans and larger, like the ASR Pans
What would you advise to use for hunting for gems such as diamond, garnet, sapphire or ruby from streams or rivers? Classifier or pan? And what size Classifiers?

The opening in a 4 mesh sieve is .187". Whereas 1/4" is .250", 1/16" larger than 4 mesh.
Therefore, a 4 mesh sieve does not have 1/4" openings.
4 mesh tells you how many openings per inch 4 mesh is 4 openings. the actual size of the openings depends on the divider thickness. Theoretically an infantry small wire would give you are .250 opening in a 4 mesh. But we know practically the wires need thickness so yes the opening will be smaller.
Is that what you wanted me to say on video? Or should I simplify it a little so I don't lose interest of my viewers and students. Remember I have been at this teaching game for a VERY long time.

Hey Dan - Thanks for the videos, I think I actually have something to add :) tell me if I am incorrect, but can you take the last number of the fraction and that is the number classifier you have. Ie 1/2 inch is #2 1/4 inch is #4
Yes, doesn't really really work when you get into 20 and 50 mesh though as you tend not to use those fractions.
Dan Hurd ....so wouldnt 20 just be 1/20 inch mesh? 1/2 is 2 per inch, 1/4 is 4 per inch....so wouldnt 1/20 be 20 per inch?

Dan Hurd that is amazing! We had wood and metal shop as well as other hands on electives but I would have jumped at that as a class!
6:26 nothing irritates me more when a teacher says stuff like that. Be respectful of your students and don't chew them out. You never know why they do things you don't like. Sometimes you say something and they need to look it up before they forget. A fraction of your class being distracted from you likely due to them looking something up is nowhere near as disrespectful as you singling them out and being condescending. I'm not trying to be mean but I want you to understand that behavior that you might think is ok can really upset others and behavior that others think is ok might upset you. However, you're the teacher and you're teaching a whole class, not having a conversation with a single person. Lots of people get into serious fights over small stuff like this because they don't understand how the other side thinks.

In general we are in Canada but in a lot of industrial situations will use the imperial system. A 2x4 is still a 2x4
when i taught in Jamaica they made us use metric which was a trip for me as I was not real familiar with metrics.., but now almost a master? not
