- This is an animation of a voltage multiplier circuit, also known as a Cockroft-Walton generator or a Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier. The animation starts with no charge on any of the capacitors, and shows how the circuit charges each capacitor in turn. The animation demonstrates that this circuit would convert a +/- 10 volt AC input into a 40V DC output. More sections could be added to increase the output voltage even further.

COCKCROFT AND WALTON WERE geniuses! this is the "tripler" in television line output transformers in old tv's that make the massive voltage for the picture tube , played with many as a kid

Why the current dont pass through diode 1 and 3 same time?
Check the voltage at cathode and anode of the corresponding diodes...
If voltage at cathode > anode, it acts as open circuit ( reverse bias)..

First it holds the first step voltage till it reach than the diode sends one direction for the second step up, than till it hits final voltage step up than sends down to bottom wire to step up the last stage back threw the transform yo step up to the request out put 40 v?
Great animation. Question: I have a jewelers plating unit with max 100 amp and 24 volt DC output. I need to up the voltage to 50 volts with a max of 100 volts DC so the unit can be used with an induction heater. As I am not an electronics guy, but can deal with some basic things with direction, how would I size the diodes and capacitors? Thank you

You can do the math, sort of. 24 volts at 100 amps, call it 25 volts to make it easy, the capacitor cannot have more than 1/4 ohm. So pop that into the capacitive reactance formula 0.25 = 1 / ( 2 pi f c) if I remember right and it seems to be around 100,000 microfarads eyeballing it. Not likely to happen. This kind of circuit is typically used for high voltage LOW current applications.

It’s still clear how C2 is charged. But it’s no longer clear how the C3 is charged. For charge C3: current flows through C2, D1, D2, D3 plus C2. Where is the minus here? After all, D1 is open. The current goes from plus to minus.
