If you just learned everything there is to know about this one compressor and all its applications, you have a LOT in your mix toolbox. One of the best and most heard pieces of gear ever made.

A very good tutorial for this misunderstood and often badly used compressor. When you truly tame this bad boy and become a blackbelt it is arguably the most gorgeous sounding compressor plugin ever (in my humble opinion). The tutorial on the piano part is especially useful.

Yeah that threshold down headroom up think blew my mind. So whats the difference between that and raising the input to achieve a similar effect

I bought it and it has changed how I use compression on buses, especially for drums, but also on buses with DI/amped bass tracks. The trick is to monitor the GR and adjust the makeup gain, just like they show in the video. Sometimes, you should only listen to what a compressor does, but in the case of the Fairchild, watch the GR and then make it up, and you will have a terrific raw, organic colour on your buses and tracks.

Very cool example of increasing the "knee" of this compressor! I've gotta check that out a little.

I didn’t get into buying plugins for the first 10+ years of recording, but once I got an Apollo, I strategically bought a few specific UAD plugins, and it isn’t the end-all-be-all, but it does offer another 7-10% if I had to guess. Could be higher in some scenarios. I still use a ton of stock stuff, but some of these UAD plugins sound WAY more like analog gear.

i know you didnt ask for my opinion on this but lately ive been using it on my master buss (for mastering) and ive been using lat/vert mode (mid side comp) and it sounds pretty damn good after tweaking it to your liking

Yesterday I put this on a guitar going direct into my Apollo Firewire. Mind you, I went to audio engineering school. I went through those presents until I found one of my liking and moved on. I dont have time to spend hours tinkering with a plugin! who does???

That's up to the DAW. In PT you choose multi-mono in the pulldown.
