They're not ugly simply due to realism, the MoCap and face actor for Aloy is actually pretty attractive and they admitted to making her look more ugly on purpose.
Aloy is not ugly in the slightest. Now, her personality to some degree makes her ugly, but within the context of the world she lives in and the people she deals with. It is understandable. And if you call Aloy ugly. Your standards of beauty are unreasonable. Plus, likely hate redheads.
Now, beyond that. Yeah. Last big titles from Western Devs have made female characters understandably ugly. And not in that sense that in realism. Not everyone sees beauty the same way. The models are ugly.

There is a reason characters like her never rank in a top ten list of most attractive female video game characters. And if you need another proof. It's so weird! I'm a woman and when I play a female character, I want her to be beautiful. When I play a male character, I want him to be hot. (I mean, unless I'm playing a mutant or a monster or something, of course.)
Why would I want to play a dumpy ugly woman or a dumpy ugly man? I see way too many dumpy ugly humans IRL. Games are supposed to be fun! And visual appeal is an important factor.

I remember a developer from Guerilla saying that having beautiful female videogame characters is "harmful", as if female gamers are so insecure they can't handle seeing a beautiful woman on screen. So that's why we got bulldog Aloy. Oh believe me it is ideologically driven.

It's interesting how people are so hyper fixated on the ugliness of the character, to the point where they they missed out on the fact that Microsoft has pulled a 'The Witcher: Blood Origins' making all the characters randomly diverse. If you look at the village scene, you can see a man with a very dark Middle-eastern skin tone, 2 black guys with the melanin slider cranked to 110% and a bald Asian man. It is supposed to take place in a medieval fantasy version of the UK and the majority of the people shown in the shot don't even look British.
The original games had dark skinned-African looking characters, but they were always rare and shown as being culturally different; here they all just look the same, which is very much a 'woke' trope in itself.
Worse... The Witcher is polish.
But they don't care, they just see "Full white=Racist"... Ironically obsessed with the white cultures.

Western game devs often makes Asian and black characters way uglier reminding me of racist caricatures in the 1940's.
"Death Stranding" realistic character "mama" game character looked stunning and "MGSV" character "Quiet" game character looked so great they enhanced the way they looked. Japanese Developer understood that we like to see pretty looking things rather than ugly looking dike.
Its not just the female characters, even the male ones are just oozing with chad handsome badass aura, Solid Snake, Big Boss, Ocelot and Solidus looked like seniors and they still have those vibes.

The more and more realistic something looks is realism, which has its place but can be boring, whereas a game's world and characters feeling real, no matter what it all looks like, is reality.

Apparently the videogames that have the most sexualized female characters have the most female players. There is almost no women playing New World, where there is a lot of them playing games like Lost Ark. Games are escapism, you can't have escapism if the character reminds you of yourself. Which even if someone isn't ugly they often think they are ugly unless they are a narcissist and think they are perfect.

There are absolutely no technical reasons (e.g. engine) beyond the decision of making a character butt ugly. These decisions are politically driven. An average AA character artist can make any character, ugly or beautiful. I can assure you that technical incompetence is not a factor in m majority of cases. In few cases there may be budget reasons, but that would be trash level games.
They could've even blamed it on off-source devs but even then they can be demanded to fix it
Disagree - uglyness often means a lack of facial symmetry and deviations from normal. It can mean less smooth skin too. All of these make the characters harder to represent. It would have been easier to make a good looking character (though still with uncanny valley potential issues). Older game engines (and GPU capabilities) could represent simple and smooth faces and not so complicated faces. Technology means that the product can be closer to what the artists have in mind - and that can include ugly characters.

If female characters being good looking is important to you, then maybe you won't like this game. I don't know if there is a character design tool, I don't think I've yet seen one (and I'm not familiar with all the latest games) that has settings for asymmetrical faces.
In my view the studio has done well making a trailer that's got people talking about it. If they make a game with great gameplay (even if not all elements of the graphics are that pleasing) then I expect it to do well commercially.
As a lady gamer I want to play pretty ladies. The point of a model being pretty is so you can focus on their clothes. Ugly distracts too much. The ugly characters are too distracting from the game itself.

Western devs just hate beauty and when it comes to females, a lot of the female devs and "female" devs are intimidated by beautiful fictional characters. Microsoft is supposedly working on their own Genshin Impact. I can't wait for it. Not because I want to play it, but because I can't wait to laugh at it. Genshin Impact has a huge draw because of the waifu factor. Western devs cannot make attractive females no matter what the genre. Even pr0n games in the west are pretty freaking ugly.
This is of course a modern societal problem thanks to the culture rot. Older games used to have attractive characters. Modern characters are very very rarely attractive and there's a good reason why there are no more iconic new characters.

Thing is, most women want to see pretty women, too. Pretty female characters aren't just made for men.
Realism has nothing to do with it. It's very easy to make a realistic looking face that are attractive. They intentionally uglify the models they use.
This is why I prefer stylized graphics. I haven't played a modern game that wasn't from a Japanese company, Indie, or Paradox for like 5 years.

Of course it's on purpose! All you have to do is just LOOK at our horribly UGLY buildings! Buildings that even 100 years ago used to be architectural works of art! And if you look at Asian games and videos (manga/anime) the characters are beautiful! Chinese mini-series have people so lovely they look like they've been drawn they're so perfect. And they are set in vistas full of color and natural life. They're breath taking!
Meanwhile, the West has completely abandoned the classical vision of beauty and everything is just drab and ugly, including the people, b/c they want to foist body-positivity on a people they've purposely poisoned and destroyed with plastic and drugs!
Corporations didn't see an ROI in making fancier buildings, so they didn't spend any money on that.

Games stopped being about living out a fantasy and became about sending a clear and partisan political message. That’s why I stopped buying AAA games a few years ago. Indie games devs are much less likely to be ideologically possessed.

I have hundreds of AAA games in my Steam and console libraries going back decades. Electronic Arts games like Populous for my Amiga is sitting on my shelf next to me.
I've got AAA games going back to Epyx, Ocean, US Gold (all considered AAA back in the early 1980's)
Nintendo carts, Sega carts etc.
I've got Ubisoft, 2K and other games in my Steam library now.
But my last AAA purchase was almost 3 years ago.
Pre order of Cyberpunk 2077.

They're doing it on purpose. Japanese developers can create gorgeous, largely realistic, human faces and proportions. Western companies know it's a visual medium, and they are trying to make a statement through that medium, just like magazine covers, ads, etc. It's equity standards, they're trying to invert everything.

Conan Exiles is prolly the latest western game that got the most attractive females, sexy clothing and armor design and boob physics. Cyberpunk 2077 females are also pretty attractive and their body is pretty hot.
Skyrim for example, with mods, you can make some of the most beautiful female character.
That's also some of the most popular mods on Nexus.

My mate works as a programmer on some very big games and they purposely down grade the looks of femal characters now and it’s not down too not knowing how to program or mo capture.
It’s done by design because there scared of there characters too be seen as promoting women as sexual objects and make ugly girls playing it not feel inferior too the images they see.
When there laying out the game design they will have a list of characters set out ,they will go into great detail on how the walk,talk,act,look and even hair cuts..it’s really amazing the level of detail they do..
But then they will have a manager at the company who will then sign off the charcter models they will have a check list and it’s focused mainly on the women charcters .

Too back up my point look at games like dead or alive/tomb raider/original saints row/gta /Batman..they all have brilliant female charcters who were bad ass and sexy but if those games were made today look at how bad the females look in the new saints row compared to the ones done years ago..the original saints rows employed big porn stars too voice and do mo cap and they looked like the porn stars such as Sasha /asa akira/Jenna ..etc.

Aloy in particular baffles me. They hired a literal supermodel (if i remember correctly) for her face claim, girl is STUNNING. As a result, in game 1 Aloy was rather pretty. Then they (by their own admission) uglified her for game 2. But... why hire a supermodel as the face claim then? O.o

As a female gamer myself, I am a strong advocate for eye candy in games. If I'm going to stare at a character for anywhere from 5-100 hours straight then I sure as hell want them to look good. Doesn't matter if they're a man, woman, or even some fantasy creature. The character you see the most in a game needs to be aesthetically pleasing.
It's diversity hiring quotas that get these activist types into the decision making positions of these game making studios.

The difference is quite striking, especially when compared to recent and upcoming Japanese releases. It's not a graphical issue, because game designers have been managing to make fairly attractive characters with far less graphical fidelity for decades. That's what artists are for, they make stuff look good despite limitations.

I think western gaming is pushing to make game production as dumb as possible. Instead of animating something they have mo-cap suits. Instead of modeling a face they scan in someones face. They don't know how to make characters or make a game. It's probably why games take 100-150gb+ of disk space, developers don't know how to optimize a game. They only know how to use tools to cobble a game together.

It’s sad that literal ugliness is being pushed in visual media. I’ll admit that I’m maybe a 3 or 4 in the looks department. But I never felt the need to make a character ugly. In fact, I always make sure to make any character I draw look beautiful.

The problem is two-fold. Firstly, that they make them ugly. But more importantly, because people still buy the product despite that. Just need to let a few studios die that promote this ugliness, and reward the few that promote beauty. Meanwhile, the good games from the 90s are still good and playable.
If the recent past becomes a trend, unless the game is actually good and not some woke-pleaser trash, It will get "budlighted" into submission.
This will never work because the vast majority of people who buy and play these games don't care about any of this, most of them don't even realize what's going on. They just consume the media for entertainment without thinking too hard about anything. This is why we ended up with western games being infested with racial ideology and ugly female characters. This is why we have horrible monetization models. This is why high quality game expansions are no longer a thing and they now sell bite sized DLCs for way more money. This is why games release in broken state with day one DLC.
There is absolutely nothing people like us can do to change any of this. We've tried many times, but every single time we've been proven that "gamers" are not a majority, the majority are the casual consumers who do not care. That's the reality. So, the only thing you can do if you want to keep enjoying video games is to simply ignore all of this. Play the good games instead, which is not really hard to do with how much the "indie" side of gaming has evolved over the years. Like many people, I have not touched a single video game from western big game devs and have never had a shortage of amazing video games to play, as a matter of fact I have more on my list than I have time to play.

I noticed this trend a while ago when Marvel and certain video games stopped showing a little leg on the female heroes. They all dress like men now. I may have been first to notice as I am a leg man I like my fantasy with a healthy dose of Frazetta style. So if you put a spiteful woman (or like i said, a man who pretends to be a woman) in charge of anything related to the character creation creation process, they will purposefully create someone as ugly or uglier than them under the guise of "getting back at men" so they can say that you're both sexist and hate ugly people if you critique them. That's why the name "Abby" has gone from just a name from one Last Of Us game, to a term to describe all brolic women in video games. If any video game developer bastardizes the female form and makes it in a very male-centric way, it's entirely done on purpose.

It's funny because despite all the "higher fidelity" graphics the art direction in older games like Half Life 2 still make characters look really good. Even the modern Half Life Alyx makes the main character (Alyx) look decently attractive

Jokes aside, do you guys know why so many people, especially FEMALE gamers play jrpg's (Like the final fantasy series, especially XIV)? Because the male AND female characters are hot. Human, cat human, dragon human, minions, bunny humans and furries... the character design in japanese games is unmatched. Both male and femalw characters are attractive. Male ones are fit and generally attractive, female ones are sometimes (But not always) curvy, and ALWAYS gorgeous.
I'm constantly surprised at how bad women are at judging the attractivness of their female friends. If a female game dev designed these characters, there's a decent chance they really believed these ladies were beautiful.
I stopped being surprised a while back. When asked, women will constantly rate each other as 10s. Tess Holliday. Lizzo. They are considered highly attractive by women constantly. It's no small wonder that attitude has spread across all forms of media.

work portfolio is often selling the brand name "ayyy i worked on this game i have AAA experience" rather than the work itself. Personal work is usually where an artist's true skill and taste shows.
