    Amazing time for bowlers in 70s and 80s. You are right - partly it was a reaction to racism. It took an extreme turn when Tony Greig (Captain of England Cricket Team at that time) said that his team will make them "grovel" in 1976 series.

      Greigy to his credit said it was a poor choice of words but taken very out of context and he understood why. South African man captaining England using the world "Grovel" to a black team during the peak of Apartheid was not a good look, but not intentional.

    As a batter watching 6'8" Joel Garner charging in and not knowing if he was going bounce you or bowl a yorker, must have been one of the most terrifying sights in sport. Then to watch Michael Holding from the other end bowling with such a long run up that on some smaller grounds he was pushing off from the boundary fence, then realising that if you survived those two there was two equally ferocious bowlers to take over after their spell, must have been a bit daunting. This was an era when not all batters wore helmets. The Windies during this era were truly awesome, their batting line up was pretty handy as well, Viv Richards amongst others, struck fear into opposition bowlers, they were the complete team. Maybe the greatest ever ! Thanks guys another great video, this time from the vault.

      @@knowledgeconsumer1289 Yes, good point one of the greatest bowlers ever, the numbers say the best, a part of the 1984 famous "Blackwash" were the Windies beat England 5-0 the only touring team to do that in a test series, ever. My memory of that team is, queuing to get into a standing room only WACA ground. Every one knew they were going to trounce us but you just had to be there to watch it happen.

    My first exposure to live pace bowling at the ground was the Gabba Test match late in 1975, between Ian Chappell's Aussies and Clive Lloyd's Windies. Lillee and Thommo (before his shoulder injury, colliding with Alan Turner in Adelaide) blasting away, and then Roberts and Holding (on debut) against us. It was beyond sport.
    I did not SEE a single delivery. Blistering.

    Every cricketing nation had plenty of fast bowlers, but these guys were also extremely skilful and intelligent in their bowling. As an Australian, we've always had top class fast bowlers, but even when one of these four was injured, there were others ready to take their place: Malcolm Marshall (some say the best); Sylvester Clarke; Winston Davis; Courtney Walsh; Patrick Patterson; Curtly Ambrose; Ian Bishop.. all these guys gave me PTSD watching them bowl to my country's batsmen.

    The 1970s West Indies team was legendary. Deadly fast bowlers, and some great batsmen (Viv Richards in particular is still regarded as one of the GOATs). Michael "Whispering Death" Holding is now one a top commentator, with a wonderful voice that sounds like a friendly bullfrog . The 70s & 80s were a time when fast bowlersbecame a major force in cricket, and not just in the West Indies. Australia had Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, New Zealand had Richard Hadlee, England had Bob Willis and John Snow. All amazing bowlers.

    A high quality pace attack of four fast bowlers, all delivering at true pace with high skill, is rare. Usually most countries can field two international standard fast bowlers at one time. The WI fielded four for most of the 70s-80s.

    Oh youve stumbled on this. Imagine supporting a team from an opposing nation cos they were SO GOOD to watch. Yes you supported your team too, but the Windies were so good for so long against everyone. For the 15 years of their supremacy they wouldve dominated the best 11 lists, simply replacing 1 retirement with a new powerhouse, bat or ball.

    These 4 were really dangerous, but the best of the Windis fast bowlers was none other than the late great Malcolm Marshall. Extremely sad that he died very young only at the age of 41. He is considered one of greatest of all time and some even consider him to be the greatest ever fast bowler, even above Wasim Akram. For me he was and still is the GOAT.

    yeah when you watch the full video - it was about "Black Power", showing the old English (& white ) masters who' sboss Man now. & there yes several teams had bowlers who could bowl up to 90 miles an hour at times ( Australia had Thompson & Lillie at this same time), but what made this team stand out and were deadly was that they had 4 bowlers who were top clas and very fast; they also had batsmen who could slog you out of the park & bat with styyle and get huge runs

  • @davidpreston9909

    You asked about bowlers reaching 90 mph. It was the fact that WI had four guys who were all that fast that was remarkable. Harold Larwood of England for example had been bowling that fast fifty years earlier (he got close to 100 mph but no speed guns in those days). However, batters knew if they could see off Larwood, his team mates were not as formidable. That WI bowling attack took it to a different level, with a full pace attack all lightening quick, and with a natural, relaxed aggression the like of which had never been seen before (or since, really). In modern terms, imagine Mark Wood and Jofra Archer times two or going back a bit farther Wasim and Waqar times two. Batters were not prepared to face a relentless onslaught from both ends, and a change of bowler brings no reduction in pace or quality.

    It wasn't uncommon to have one > 90 mph/ bowler in a test team, even prior to ww2. To have 2 was unusual ..... 4 unheard of !

  • @vinays77777
    @vinays77777 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    it was uncommon.... the pitches in west Indies are usually slow tracks.
    In Australia the pitches are very hard with cracks between ...therefore they are very bouncy and swaying a lot.... in west indies it was not the case... for 4 bowlers to pop up like that who are very fast, they were dangerous both literally and figuratively. Now a ways batsmen play so much cricket that even 100mph ball can be dealt with...but in those days many people didt even face 80mph balls .
