  • I was inspired by other Kayak racks I saw on TH-cam, but did not see one that met all my needs, so I built it. I wanted to minimize cost, not make any modifications to the RV other than using the built-in hitch, wanted to reuse the bike rack I already had, and it had to keep the Kayaks sideways in order to minimize wind resistance.
    Update (5/4/2021) I created a second video with a wheels mod for easily moving the rack around: • DIY RV Kayak Rack Whee...
    Update (6/27/2021) Here are my rack's dimensions. Make sure that you make it with enough width (front to back) to fit your kayaks. www.dropbox.co...

    *I was expecting a lot of shortcuts to be taken at this price. I was wrong. Decent quality **Latest.Bike** raker . Easy on easy off.*

    Great job! Extremely inspirational, thank you for the boot in the backside. Your video reminds us all that we are not locked into buying items needed from corporations but can do things our selves with a little bit of ingenuity.

    Way better than any "professionally made" Chinese flimsy junk.

    How much does the rack weight? Is it hard to install and take off camper by yourself?

    How long are your kayaks? I have a touring yak and it's 14 feet. Just curious - nice job, I'll probably copy your design.

    • @ssenneff
      @ssenneff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Kayaks are about 10-1/2 ft. 14 is probably too long to go straight up, but maybe it can ride on a diagonal across?

    Great concept. All the racks out there are so expensive. Hopefully the weight off all that metal doesn’t overload the bumper / brackets.

      The empty rack is under 100 lbs - probably around 75lbs, but I haven't weighed it (I'll update the description if I do). I added wheels in my second video just because it is otherwise awkward to move around myself. The vehicle hitch is rated for 500 lbs of tongue weight, so even with kayaks and bikes I'd estimate that I am at half the rated weight.

    Do you ever catch the bottom of the kayaks on the road when going up steep entryway.

    • @ssenneff
      @ssenneff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that can happen. What I do on my driveway is to loosen the side straps securing the kayaks, lift the end of the kayaks 6" or so and set it on the top of the carrier rack, closer to the center. Once in the street I reset the kayaks back into the cutouts and re-strap. I had one experience when I went into a store parking lot and the kayaks scrapped, but fortunately just light scratched on the kayaks.

    I think you did a great job and I'll be building myself one here soon!

      I took it on a 1,800 mile trip last fall. The only issue was that the clasp on the arm at the top broke. It was too small a gauge of metal. I have since changed the clasp and hinge with beefier hardware I got from Lowes. During the trip I just used a bungie cord to secure it. Went from Texas to Georgia, then Florida and back.

    How long are your Kayaks, Would a 12 Foot kayak still be under the maximum height

    • @ssenneff
      @ssenneff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you will be fine. I would make sure the total height stays under 13 feet. I believe that the standard for interstate highways in 13-1/2 feet max.

    How does this effect the rear camera view?

    • @ssenneff
      @ssenneff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not affected much since the camera has a view between the kayaks. I occasionally look using the camera near the beginning of travels to see that all is well.

      @@pamelacraig6150 I have reviewed this design and others with my fabricator buddy...it will be built when the RV comes out of storage in April. Going with aluminum to save weight and vertical bike rack. Will post a pic when it is complete.
