    I must say that I have learned more from you than anyone else. Although I can not work in oils because of allergies, I work in acrylics and the techniques you teach can be transfer to that medium as well, well mostly. However, I take offense when people comment that they want you to move on to other types of scenery. I don't think that they truly understand what it takes to be a working artist. So please Michael, keep doing what you are doing, because I for one absolutely appreciate your exquisite talent and your willingness to share it with us. Thank you

    Thank you for sharing this! I struggle with distant trees so this was very useful, I love how you go into all of the tiny details like adding a bit of blue to the edge of the tree line, and describing the warmth of the different tones of green. I'm also glad that after watching this I'll have a use for my beat up filbert brush. :)

    Michael, I am an art historian who, for the past 50 years, has been a painter wannabe. I could never find a teacher who could show me how to achieve what I wanted to. They couldn't do it themselves, so they could not teach me. What I wanted to do was to learn the techniques of the American "Hudson River School" painters. Your videos finally have brought me as near to the desired verisimilitude in landscape painting by showing me relatively simple alla prima techniques. Now I finally get it ! Thank you so much for sharing your methods. :-) - Brian Corll

    Well, I believe I have learned something new. After having painted stylistic realism for over 50 years, I recently switched to photo realistic and have already made the mistake of trying to make an exact copy of a picture. I watch you paint this one and although it is clinically the same picture, it is not an exact duplicate, so going forward, neither will be any of mine. Thanks

My questions is one I had battled with when making the choice of career. Are you feeding your artistic need with your work or is it now more of a job? I had always wondered what it would be like if I chosen another path and made my love my job.

    • @TungstenCarbideTempe
      @TungstenCarbideTempe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think painting has a soul. Think how much effort one has to put in. There’s no “undo” button when you paint in real life ( not in photoshop), so just like a stonemasons or wood carver, one has to put a lot of thought, before executing the next step.
      So after spending a lot of time and feelings, effort, risks- one embed his/ her soul in the creation and thats why some paintings are so sought after.

    You are right about the flatness of your under-painting. I believe you recently started using acrylic paints for this. They definitely go flatter, more gray and chalkier I have found. If you "mist" them with water (don't then start rubbing them or some paint may smear or come off) then you can see more of the original colors you intended but not perfectly so. You almost have to intentionally paint things lighter, brighter and bolder in acrylics to get them to dry more like you intend. At least that is my experience with acrylics. Dave

    • @shellelodge
      @shellelodge 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      very true. i have found though that different brands of acrylic dry differently, some are very chalky, others are less so... also, that certain mediums (such as the flow aid i add with my water for thinning has a high gloss finish) will alter the dry finish depending on the amounts you use and the acrylics original level of 'matt-ness'. personally, i quite like this gloss as i work layers (others might not) but it does seem to keep a richness to the drying colours, and can be toned down or evened out by the time you varnish. :) xxx

    • @robyn9513
      @robyn9513 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shreyas Bal He uses Acrylic painting as his underpainting first, then goes over it in detail with oil. The effect you get with oils is so much more realistic than just using acrylics paints.😉

    I would also like to see you paint other themes with this reality. I believe every screen requires hours of work. You do not need to make a complete picture, you could leave an MDF (a large piece) at your disposal, paint small examples: a flower leaf, another day an apple, another day a house, one flower at a time. Sorry, it's just a suggestion. Good weekend!
    PS - google translator !!!!!!!!

  • @nardela87

    Good tips and tricks as always, since the primer video. But it is not that simple. You have to be talented and have on hand the right tools., eg the brushs, and practice even more each day. I am trying my best, and so I'm improving my results step by step.

    is it only oil or do you paint with acrylics?

  • @sabriath
    @sabriath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    MJS (or anyone who may know this)....do you use acrylic for the blocking-in with oil on top, or do you use oil for the entire picture? Also, is there a better technique to get rid of the canvas stitching, or a better canvas altogether because I seem to constantly see cross-hatch when looking at the finer detail.....or is that normal, and I'm just over-analyzing?

    • @shellelodge
      @shellelodge 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MJS tends to block in first with acrylics (due to the quick drying time). He has a couple of other videos that go into more detail about the blocking in stage from start to finish, well worth checking out :) As for 'canvas' or surfaces, you have a lot of options -stretched canvases, canvas glued to panel, gesso panels... all can have a variety of finishes from very fine woven canvas to rough weave. All can be lightly sanded, have extra layers of gesso applied or visa versa, as well as adding more than one layer to get the surface you want -you really can customise the finish to what suits you best! :) MJS does have a video containing his surface prep method, he uses MDF (medium density fibre) -a lot more economical than canvas, and you can get a very smooth finish if you need to. Hope that helps? and good luck ;) xxx

      @sabriath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +shellelodge
      Thank you very much for that....I've recently gotten back into painting (20 years out), first was a "bob ross" inspired quicky just to get the technique back, but my second I wanted to be more fine detail (similar to MJS)...just been having a bit of trouble, but I'll just keep adding layers until it looks right lol

    • @shellelodge
      @shellelodge 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, an artist's time creating isn't called their 'practice' for nothing! lol. I've been drawing and painting on and off for most of my 35yrs on this planet, but i also struggle, and each material/surface/medium/technique has it's own quirks and temperament... but that's all part of the fun! all you can do is keep working with it. you can add gesso to canvases you already have (including bought pre-gessoed ones), thin layer, lightly sand by hand (i wouldn't use anything too course, or power tools though, or you might go through to the canvas!) and keep adding fine layers until it 'feels' right. you'll know what 'right' is for you after a few experiments... good luck xxx

    Ignore the comment from Lsi or whatever . You do us a favor by showing your work. I also like the piano piece that is playing. I will now give you a lesson on tha piano. The only interval that is in tune is the octave. They are beatless. All other intervals are out of tune. The fourths are slightly wider and the fiths are narrowed. I will explain it further later.your friend, Franz Schubert

    Like the 83 videos before, it is also impeccable and hyper realistic. But Michael, I am unhappy with these videos, aren't these repetitive? Sir, why are you blocking us from knowing your many other facets as an artist? Like those buildings and streetscapes that you have done before. You have shown us one can replicate city skyline convincingly. In addition to painting realistic trees, bushes, water bodies etc., vast expansive landscapes and natural habitats like rural landscapes will also allow us to learn many techniques from you. Please do not mind my expressing the feelings. If you intend to teach these techniques at you upcoming site, please let me know.

      Thank you for caring to reply to my comment. Sorry, I couldn't refrain myself from commenting like that. The affinity that gets generated while traveling along with your videos over these months makes one to 'demand' to get more! Thank you once again and will wait for your full fledged web site to get more.
