Exploring the Ruins of a Castle

  • I had heard rumours about three abandoned castles in a remote field in the Irish countryside, atop a cliff over the Atlantic Ocean. I decided to see if I could find it, and followed directions from a man who pointed at a hill and said "walk 35 minutes straight in that direction".
    Later on, I discovered it was built by the Irish to defend against the Normans in the 12th century.
    Dunlough Castle, West Cork, Ireland.

    Nice video! Just to say from your video description, it wasn't built BY the Normans, it was built by the IRISH to defend against the Normans after they invaded!
    It's an O'Mahony castle, who were nobility from South Ireland and used to rule most of what is now County Cork. They were from the Eóganachta dynasty that were kings of all Munster for 800 years. But their dynasty was deep in decline having spent years fighting Vikings, rival Irish warlords and eventually the Normans. They were very navy orientated and got wealthy trading and taxing their harbors, so built 12 castles around the south coast of Ireland to help defend their land, most of them in a lot more populated areas and by ports and bays.
    It's one of the first castles built by the Irish at all - previously the Irish would build mostly wooden hill fort type defenses of varying size (much like most early medieval populations did). With the shock and awe of Normans cutting into the country, this castle could be likened to 'Helms Deep' (the Riders of Rohans last defense fantasy castle from Lord of the Rings). This was very much a last defense for their existence if it came to it.
    The lake is walled, cliffs on either side and a narrow path through hilly terrain would put any army attacking this spot at a huge disadvantage. Allowing even a small garrison to hold off a much larger force, just as the small force of Spartans and other Greeks held off the vast army of Persians at Thermopylae.
    And indeed, it must have worked, the Normans never defeated this castle - nor did they manage to take over the lands of South west Munster in general. South west Munster were some of the last Irish royal families to eventually bend their knee to the English after hundreds of years and many rebellions.

      Yes great info. I may just have TO rekindle that old proud O'Mahoney banner once more as a ruling kingdom in this new game I am making.
      Any suggestions on if they would more prefer their main keep located down near the central seas, or a bit higher up towards those scenic mountain pines..? :)

      Come to India theres are thousands of castles both small.. medium big n enormous.. you'll be astonished by their beauty architecture designs etc... that have withstood the test of time some over a thousands of years etc etc... most n majority of european castles are plain simple n boring....

    • @oscarmontesan0
      @oscarmontesan0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@truth6871 There are tens of thousands of castles in Europe with thousands of years of history. There are even regions named after the abundance of castles (Castille in Spain). If you think they are "plain simple n boring" you have just not researched enough and you are falling into stereotypes.
      Moreover, a castle is a defensive structure made for war, so it is not meant to be decorated, but strong. If you are looking for pretty buildings, then they are just palaces or chateaus, with less history, and I tell you those are the boring ones.

    I just went to explore it. The first castle is about the same as well as the second one that’s closer to the water. The third one that’s in between the others however, has an open window that you can squeeze through. Once inside you can walk up about 15 spiral steps to get to the top and see an amazing view. I wouldn’t trust the floor on the top though.
